Optical And Esr Study Of Er3+ In Linbo3
We report laser-excited optical transitions between the 4S3/2 and 4I15/2 multiplets of Er3+ as an impurity in the LiNbO3 host, together with the optical-absorption spectra at liquid-helium and liquid-nitrogen temperatures. The optical data allow us to determine the crystal-field splittings of those levels and the spin-Hamiltonian parameters for the 4I15/2 lower multiplet. The observed electron-spin resonance and the angular variation of this spectrum agree with the parameters obtained by optical techniques. Both techniques show that only one of the three possible trigonal sites in LiNbO3 is occupied by Er3+ within the experimental sensitivity, in agreement with recent x-ray standing-wave measurements. © 1995 The American Physical Society.5153206320
The asymptotic iteration method for the angular spheroidal eigenvalues with arbitrary complex size parameter c
The asymptotic iteration method is applied, to calculate the angular
spheroidal eigenvalues with arbitrary complex size
parameter . It is shown that, the obtained numerical results of
are all in excellent agreement with the available
published data over the full range of parameter values , , and .
Some representative values of for large real are

Effect of continuum couplings in fusion of halo Be on Pb around the Coulomb barrier
The effect of continuum couplings in the fusion of the halo nucleus Be
on Pb around the Coulomb barrier is studied using a three-body model
within a coupled discretised continuum channels (CDCC) formalism. We
investigate in particular the role of continuum-continuum couplings. These are
found to hinder total, complete and incomplete fusion processes. Couplings to
the projectile bound excited state redistribute the complete and
incomplete fusion cross sections, but the total fusion cross section remains
nearly constant. Results show that continuum-continuum couplings enhance the
irreversibility of breakup and reduce the flux that penetrates the Coulomb
barrier. Converged total fusion cross sections agree with the experimental ones
for energies around the Coulomb barrier, but underestimate those for energies
well above the Coulomb barrier.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, accepted in Phys. Rev.
Estudo seccional revela um alto percentual de infecção assintomática por Plasmodium vivax em área do Rio Negro, Amazonas, Brasil
A parasitological, clinical, serological and molecular cross-sectional study carried out in a highly endemic malaria area of Rio Negro in the Amazon State, Brazil, revealed a high prevalence of asymptomatic Plasmodium vivax infection. A total of 109 persons from 25 families were studied in five villages. Ninety-nine inhabitants (90.8%) had at least one previous episode of malaria. Serology showed 85.7% and 46.9% of positivity when P. falciparum antigens and P. vivax MSP-1, respectively, were used. Twenty blood samples were PCR positive for P. vivax (20.4%) and no P. falciparum infection was evidenced by this technique. No individual presenting positive PCR reaction had clinical malaria during the survey neither in the six months before nor after, confirming that they were cases of asymptomatic infection. Only one 12 year old girl presented a positive thick blood smear for P. vivax. This is the first description of asymptomatic Plasmodium infection in this area studied.
t' at the LHC: the physics of discovery
A search for a fourth family at the LHC is presently a low priority, but we
argue that an effective search can be conducted early with only a few inverse
femtobarns of data. We discuss a method based on invariant masses of single
jets for identifying the 's originating from heavy quark decays. This can
significantly increase signal to background in the reconstruction of the
mass. We also study the various types of physics that can impact the background
estimate, most notably higher order effects, initial state radiation, and
models of the underlying event.Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures, small improvements, version to appear in JHE
Electroanalytical method for the analysis of methyldopa in pharmaceutical tablets using a crude extract of laccase from Pycnoporus sanguineus as oxidizing agent
Several colorimetric and chromatographic methods have been used for the identification and quantification of methyldopa (MA) in pharmaceutical formulations and clinical samples. However, these methods are time- and reagent-consuming, which stimulated our efforts to develop a simple, fast, and lowcost alternative method. We carried out an electroanalytical method for the determination of MA in pharmaceutical formulations using the crude enzymatic extract of laccase from Pycnoporus sanguineus as oxidizing agent. This method is based on the biochemical oxidation of MA by laccase (LAC), both in solution, followed by electrochemical reduction on glassy carbon electrode surface. This method was employed for the determination of MA in pure and pharmaceutical formulations and compared with the results obtained using the official method. A wide linear curve from 2.5 x 10-5 to 1 x 10-4 mol L-1 was found with a detection limit calculated from 4.5 x 10-6 mol L-1.Colegio de Farmacéuticos de la Provincia de Buenos Aire
Sub- and above barrier fusion of loosely bound Li with Si
Fusion excitation functions are measured for the system Li+Si
using the characteristic -ray method, encompassing both the sub-barrier
and above barrier regions, viz., = 7-24 MeV. Two separate experiments
were performed, one for the above barrier region (= 11-24 MeV) and
another for the below barrier region (= 7-10 MeV). The results were
compared with our previously measured fusion cross section for the
Li+Si system. We observed enhancement of fusion cross section at
sub-barrier regions for both Li and Li, but yield was substantially
larger for Li. However, for well above barrier regions, similar type of
suppression was identified for both the systems.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, as accepted for publication in Eur.Phys.J.
