A search for technosignatures from 14 planetary systems in the Kepler field with the Green Bank Telescope at 1.15-1.73 GHz
Analysis of Kepler mission data suggests that the Milky Way includes billions
of Earth-like planets in the habitable zone of their host star. Current
technology enables the detection of technosignatures emitted from a large
fraction of the Galaxy. We describe a search for technosignatures that is
sensitive to Arecibo-class transmitters located within ~420 ly of Earth and
transmitters that are 1000 times more effective than Arecibo within ~13 000 ly
of Earth. Our observations focused on 14 planetary systems in the Kepler field
and used the L-band receiver (1.15-1.73 GHz) of the 100 m diameter Green Bank
Telescope. Each source was observed for a total integration time of 5 minutes.
We obtained power spectra at a frequency resolution of 3 Hz and examined
narrowband signals with Doppler drift rates between +/-9 Hz/s. We flagged any
detection with a signal-to-noise ratio in excess of 10 as a candidate signal
and identified approximately 850 000 candidates. Most (99%) of these candidate
signals were automatically classified as human-generated radio-frequency
interference (RFI). A large fraction (>99%) of the remaining candidate signals
were also flagged as anthropogenic RFI because they have frequencies that
overlap those used by global navigation satellite systems, satellite downlinks,
or other interferers detected in heavily polluted regions of the spectrum. All
19 remaining candidate signals were scrutinized and none were attributable to

Morphometric characterization of collagen and fat in normal ventricular myocardium.
OBJECTIVE: We used automated image analysis software to determine the proportion of collagen, fat, and myocytes across six histological regions of normal ventricular myocardium. METHODS: Twenty-nine non-cardiac death cases referred to our national cardiac pathology center were included in this study. Whole hearts were macroscopically and microscopically normal following expert histopathological evaluation. Tissue sections from the right ventricular outflow tract, right ventricle (RV), anterior interventricular septum (IVS), posterior IVS, anterior left ventricle (LV), and posterior LV were stained with Picrosirius red for collagen and scanned using a high-resolution slide scanner. Quantification of collagen, fat, and myocyte proportions was performed using Visiopharm software after automated exclusion of perivascular collagen. RESULTS: The majority of decedents were male (25/29; 86%) with a mean age at death of 32.1 ± 9.9 (range 18-54) and mean BMI 28.7 ± 7.3. We report predicted values (collagen %, fat %, myocytes %) for cardiac tissue composition within the RV, IVS, and LV (including epicardial and endocardial layers). The proportion of collagen and fat were higher in the RV compared with the LV (ratios 1.61 [1.45-1.78]; 2.63 [1.99-3.48], respectively) and RV compared with the IVS (ratios 1.77 [1.60-1.97]; 8.41[6.35-11.13], respectively). The ratio of epicardial versus endocardial fat was increased in both ventricles (RV: ratio 4.49 [3.67-5.49]; LV: ratio 3.46 [2.49-4.81]). In multivariable analysis, there was no significant association between collagen or fat proportion and sex (p=0.12; p=0.08, respectively), age at death (p=0.36; p=0.23, respectively), or BMI (p=0.45; p=0.43, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings provide location and sex-specific proportions of myocardial histological tissue composition that may aid quantitative evaluation of pathology in future studies
Sudden Death and Left Ventricular Involvement in Arrhythmogenic Cardiomyopathy
BACKGROUND: Arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM) is an inherited heart muscle disorder characterized by myocardial fibrofatty replacement and an increased risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD). Originally described as a right ventricular disease, ACM is increasingly recognized as a biventricular entity. We evaluated pathological, genetic, and clinical associations in a large SCD cohort. METHODS: We investigated 5205 consecutive cases of SCD referred to a national cardiac pathology center between 1994 and 2018. Hearts and tissue blocks were examined by expert cardiac pathologists. After comprehensive histological evaluation, 202 cases (4%) were diagnosed with ACM. Of these, 15 (7%) were diagnosed antemortem with dilated cardiomyopathy (n=8) or ACM (n=7). Previous symptoms, medical history, circumstances of death, and participation in competitive sport were recorded. Postmortem genetic testing was undertaken in 24 of 202 (12%). Rare genetic variants were classified according to American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics criteria. RESULTS: Of 202 ACM decedents (35.4±13.2 years; 82% male), no previous cardiac symptoms were reported in 157 (78%). Forty-one decedents (41/202; 20%) had been participants in competitive sport. The adjusted odds of dying during physical exertion were higher in men than in women (odds ratio, 4.58; 95% CI, 1.54-13.68; P=0.006) and in competitive athletes in comparison with nonathletes (odds ratio, 16.62; 95% CI, 5.39-51.24; P<0.001). None of the decedents with an antemortem diagnosis of dilated cardiomyopathy fulfilled definite 2010 Task Force criteria. The macroscopic appearance of the heart was normal in 40 of 202 (20%) cases. There was left ventricular histopathologic involvement in 176 of 202 (87%). Isolated right ventricular disease was seen in 13%, isolated left ventricular disease in 17%, and biventricular involvement in 70%. Among whole hearts, the most common areas of fibrofatty infiltration were the left ventricular posterobasal (68%) and anterolateral walls (58%). Postmortem genetic testing yielded pathogenic variants in ACM-related genes in 6 of 24 (25%) decedents. CONCLUSIONS: SCD attributable to ACM affects men predominantly, most commonly occurring during exertion in athletic individuals in the absence of previous reported cardiac symptoms. Left ventricular involvement is observed in the vast majority of SCD cases diagnosed with ACM at autopsy. Current Task Force criteria may fail to diagnose biventricular ACM before death
Why business angels reject investment opportunities: Is it personal?
A major focus of research on business angels has examined their decision-making processes and investment criteria. As business angels reject most of the opportunities that they receive, this article explores the reasons informing such decisions. In view of angel heterogeneity, investment opportunities might be expected to be rejected for differing reasons. Two sources of data are used to examine this issue. Face-to-face interviews with 30 business angels in Scotland and Northern Ireland provided information on typical ‘deal killers’. This was complemented by an Internet survey of United Kingdom that attracted responses from 238 UK business angels. The findings confirm that the main reason for rejection relates to the entrepreneur/management team. However, angel characteristics do not explain the number of reasons given for opportunity rejection nor do they predict the reasons for rejecting investment opportunities. This could be related to the increasing trend for business angels to join organised groups which, in turn, leads to the development of a shared repertoire of investment approaches. We suggest the concept of ‘communities-of-practice’ as an explanation for this finding

Barriers to the provision of smoking cessation assistance:A qualitative study among Romanian family physicians
BACKGROUND: Smoking cessation is the most effective intervention to prevent and slow down the progression of several respiratory and other diseases and improve patient outcomes. Romania has legislation and a national tobacco control programme in line with the World Health Organization Framework for Tobacco Control. However, few smokers are advised to quit by their family physicians (FPs). AIM: To identify and explore the perceived barriers that prevent Romanian FPs from engaging in smoking cessation with patients. METHODS: A qualitative study was undertaken. A total of 41 FPs were recruited purposively from Bucharest and rural areas within 600 km of the city. Ten FPs took part in a focus group and 31 participated in semistructured interviews. Analysis was descriptive, inductive and themed, according to the barriers experienced. RESULTS: Five main barriers were identified: limited perceived role for FPs; lack of time during consultations; past experience and presence of disincentives; patients' inability to afford medication; and lack of training in smoking cessation skills. Overarching these specific barriers were key themes of a medical and societal hierarchy, which undermined the FP role, stretched resources and constrained care. CONCLUSIONS: Many of the barriers described by the Romanian FPs reflected universally recognised challenges to the provision of smoking cessation advice. The context of a relatively hierarchical health-care system and limitations of time and resources exacerbated many of the problems and created new barriers that will need to be addressed if Romania is to achieve the aims of its National Programme Against Tobacco Consumption

This paper reviews the epidemiological and clinical data on how medications (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, estrogens and antibiotics), lifestyle factors (smoking, psychological stress, diet and air pollution) may precipitate clinical relapses and recurrence. Potential biological mechanisms include: increasing thrombotic tendency, imbalances in prostaglandin synthesis, alterations in the composition of gut microbiota, and mucosal damage causing increased permeability
The Interaction of Canine Plasminogen with Streptococcus pyogenes Enolase: They Bind to One Another but What Is the Nature of the Structures Involved?
For years it has been clear that plasminogen from different sources and enolase from different sources interact strongly. What is less clear is the nature of the structures required for them to interact. This work examines the interaction between canine plasminogen (dPgn) and Streptococcus pyogenes enolase (Str enolase) using analytical ultracentrifugation (AUC), surface plasmon resonance (SPR), fluorescence polarization, dynamic light scattering (DLS), isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), and simple pull-down reactions. Overall, our data indicate that a non-native structure of the octameric Str enolase (monomers or multimers) is an important determinant of its surface-mediated interaction with host plasminogen. Interestingly, a non-native structure of plasminogen is capable of interacting with native enolase. As far as we can tell, the native structures resist forming stable mixed complexes
Biophysical aspects of handcycling performance in rehabilitation, daily life and recreational sports; a narrative review
Aim
In this narrative review the potential and importance of handcycling are evaluated. Four conceptual models form the framework for this review; (1) the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health; (2) the Stress-Strain-Capacity model; (3) the Human-Activity-Assistive Technology model; and (4) the power balance model for cyclic exercise.
Methods
Based on international handcycle experience in (scientific) research and practice, evidence-based benefits of handcycling and optimization of handcycle settings are presented and discussed for rehabilitation, daily life and recreational sports.
Results
As the load can be distributed over the full 360° cycle in handcycling, peak stresses in the shoulder joint and upper body muscles reduce. Moreover, by handcycling regularly, the physical capacity can be improved. The potential of handcycling as an exercise mode for a healthy lifestyle should be recognized and advocated much more widely in rehabilitation and adapted sports practice.
The interface between handcycle and its user should be optimized by choosing a suitable person-specific handcycle, but mainly by optimizing the handcycle dimensions to one’s needs and desires. These dimensions can influence efficient handcycle use and potentially improve both endurance and speed of handcycling.
Conclusion
To optimize performance in rehabilitation, daily life and recreational sports, continued and more systematic research is required.
Implications for rehabilitation
Handcycling allows users to travel farther distances at higher speeds and to train outdoors. It should be recognized as an alternative exercise modality for daily outdoor use, also already in early rehabilitation, while it contributes to a healthy lifestyle.
To individualize handcycle performance, the user-handcycle (assistive device) interface as well as the vehicle mechanics should be optimized to minimize external power and reduce friction, so that the upper body capacity can be efficiently used.
To optimize handcycling individual performance, both the physiological and biomechanical aspects of handcycling should be considered when monitoring or testing handcycle exercise
On the Query Complexity of Constructing PRFs from Non-adaptive PRFs
This paper studies constructions of pseudorandom functions (PRFs) from non-adaptive PRFs (naPRFs), i.e., PRFs which are secure only against distinguishers issuing all of their queries at once.
Berman and Haitner (Journal of Cryptology, \u2715) gave a one-call construction which, however, is not hardness preserving -- to obtain a secure PRF (against polynomial-time distinguishers), they need to rely on a naPRF secure against superpolynomial-time distinguishers; in contrast, all known hardness-preserving constructions require calls. This leaves open the question of whether a stronger superpolynomial-time assumption is necessary for one-call (or constant-call) approaches. Here, we show that a large class of one-call constructions (which in particular includes the one of Berman and Haitner) cannot be proved to be a secure PRF under a black-box reduction to the (polynomial-time) naPRF security of the underlying function.
Our result complements existing impossibility results (Myers, EUROCRYPT \u2704; Pietrzak, CRYPTO \u2705) ruling out natural specific approaches, such as parallel and sequential composition. Furthermore, we show that our techniques extend to rule out a natural class of constructions making parallel but arbitrary number of calls which in particular includes parallel composition and the two-call, cuckoo-hashing based construction of Berman et al.\ (Journal of Cryptology, \u2719)
