    The role of collaboration in reducing quality variability in Brazilian breweries

    This paper aims to analyse how small-scale breweries undertake vertical and horizontal collaborations to manage their quality performance (when measured by reducing quality variabilities). While vertical collaborations are overemphasised, horizontal and simultaneous collaboration efforts have been understudied. Our contribution lies in proposing an interplay of vertical and horizontal collaborations through information sharing, joint decision-making, and knowledge exchange with intra- and inter-supply chain partners to address quality variability issues. We draw attention to supply chain relationships being predominantly informal, which contribute strongly towards accessing external sources of knowledge. Additionally, such collaborative efforts have led companies to achieve mutual gains in their relationships. Finally, a framework is presented that consolidates the supply chain actors, collaboration types, socialisation mechanisms, and relationship types

    CARD15 mutations and colorectal cancer in a South European country

    PURPOSE: CARD15 mutations are associated with higher susceptibility to Crohn's disease (CD) and longstanding colonic CD increases the risk of developing colorectal cancer (CRC). The relation between these mutations and sporadic CRC remains controversial. The aim of this study was to assess whether germline and/or somatic CARD15 mutations are risk factors for sporadic CRC in Portugal and whether there are genotype-phenotype correlations in these patients. METHODS: The three main CARD15 mutations (R702W, G908R and 3020insC) were researched in 112 sporadic CRC patients and 152 healthy subjects. RESULTS: Overall, CARD15 mutations were found in 18 patients (16.1%) and in 15 controls (9.9%; p = 0.132). Individually, the incidence of R702W was significantly higher in patients than in controls (12.5% vs. 5.3%, p = 0.035), whereas the genotype frequencies for G908R (2.7% vs. 3.3%) and 3020insC (0.9% vs. 1.3%) were not statistically different between the two groups. Entire genotypic agreement was found in patients genotyped for blood and neoplastic DNA. A significantly higher incidence of CARD15 mutations was detected in patients with CRC diagnosed under 60 years old (28.6% vs. 10.4%, p = 0.015) and in female patients (24.4% vs. 10.4%, p = 0.048). No associations were found between CARD15 mutations and family history, symptoms or CRC pathologic characteristics. CONCLUSIONS: The CARD15 R702W variant might be a predisposing factor to sporadic CRC in Portugal, particularly in patients under 60-years old and in female patients. This susceptibility appears to be linked with germline CARD15 mutations. Nevertheless, we have found no evidence that CARD15 mutations predict the pathologic characteristics of CRC

    AVATAR - Machine Learning Pipeline Evaluation Using Surrogate Model

    © 2020, The Author(s). The evaluation of machine learning (ML) pipelines is essential during automatic ML pipeline composition and optimisation. The previous methods such as Bayesian-based and genetic-based optimisation, which are implemented in Auto-Weka, Auto-sklearn and TPOT, evaluate pipelines by executing them. Therefore, the pipeline composition and optimisation of these methods requires a tremendous amount of time that prevents them from exploring complex pipelines to find better predictive models. To further explore this research challenge, we have conducted experiments showing that many of the generated pipelines are invalid, and it is unnecessary to execute them to find out whether they are good pipelines. To address this issue, we propose a novel method to evaluate the validity of ML pipelines using a surrogate model (AVATAR). The AVATAR enables to accelerate automatic ML pipeline composition and optimisation by quickly ignoring invalid pipelines. Our experiments show that the AVATAR is more efficient in evaluating complex pipelines in comparison with the traditional evaluation approaches requiring their execution

    Niobium and niobium-iron coatings on API 5LX 70 steel applied with HVOF

    The present study aimed to create and characterize niobium and niobium-iron60% coatings applied to steel API 5L X70 using the hypersonic thermal spray process (HVOF). The morphologies of the coatings were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and profilometry, while the coatings’ hardnesses was evaluated using the Vickers hardness test. The coatings’ corrosion resistance was evaluated by monitoring their open circuit potential and potentiodynamic polarization and performing electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in a 0.05 M NaCl solution. The results showed that the niobium-iron coating contained minor porosity regions, while such defects occurred over large regions of the niobium coating. In terms of corrosion resistance, the coatings obtained in this work promoted a reduction in the substrate’s corrosion rate, but the presence of discontinuities such as porosity compromised the barrier effects of these coatings

    Social sciences research in neglected tropical diseases 2: A bibliographic analysis

    The official published version of the article can be found at the link below.Background There are strong arguments for social science and interdisciplinary research in the neglected tropical diseases. These diseases represent a rich and dynamic interplay between vector, host, and pathogen which occurs within social, physical and biological contexts. The overwhelming sense, however, is that neglected tropical diseases research is a biomedical endeavour largely excluding the social sciences. The purpose of this review is to provide a baseline for discussing the quantum and nature of the science that is being conducted, and the extent to which the social sciences are a part of that. Methods A bibliographic analysis was conducted of neglected tropical diseases related research papers published over the past 10 years in biomedical and social sciences. The analysis had textual and bibliometric facets, and focussed on chikungunya, dengue, visceral leishmaniasis, and onchocerciasis. Results There is substantial variation in the number of publications associated with each disease. The proportion of the research that is social science based appears remarkably consistent (<4%). A textual analysis, however, reveals a degree of misclassification by the abstracting service where a surprising proportion of the "social sciences" research was pure clinical research. Much of the social sciences research also tends to be "hand maiden" research focused on the implementation of biomedical solutions. Conclusion There is little evidence that scientists pay any attention to the complex social, cultural, biological, and environmental dynamic involved in human pathogenesis. There is little investigator driven social science and a poor presence of interdisciplinary science. The research needs more sophisticated funders and priority setters who are not beguiled by uncritical biomedical promises
