    A bibliometric analysis of the first twenty years of soft computing

    © 2018, Springer International Publishing AG. Soft Computing was launched in 1997. Today, the journal is becoming twenty years old. Motivated by this anniversary, this article develops a bibliometric analysis of the journal in order to identify the leading trends of the journal in terms of publications and citations. The work considers several issues including the leading authors, institutions and countries. The study also uses a software to develop a graphical analysis. The results show a significant increase of the journal during the last years that has consolidated the journal as a leading one in the field

    GIFT-Grab: Real-time C++ and Python multi-channel video capture, processing and encoding API

    GIFT-Grab is an open-source API for acquiring, processing and encoding video streams in real time. GIFT-Grab supports video acquisition using various frame-grabber hardware as well as from standard-compliant network streams and video files. The current GIFT-Grab release allows for multi-channel video acquisition and encoding at the maximum frame rate of supported hardware – 60 frames per second (fps). GIFT-Grab builds on well-established highly configurable multimedia libraries including FFmpeg and OpenCV. GIFT-Grab exposes a simplified high-level API, aimed at facilitating integration into client applications with minimal coding effort. The core implementation of GIFT-Grab is in C++11. GIFT-Grab also features a Python API compatible with the widely used scientific computing packages NumPy and SciPy. GIFT-Grab was developed for capturing multiple simultaneous intra-operative video streams from medical imaging devices. Yet due to the ubiquity of video processing in research, GIFT-Grab can be used in many other areas. GIFT-Grab is hosted and managed on the software repository of the Centre for Medical Image Computing (CMIC) at University College London, and is also mirrored on GitHub. In addition it is available for installation from the Python Package Index (PyPI) via the pip installation tool

    The whole-brain pattern of magnetic susceptibility perturbations in Parkinson's disease

    Although iron-mediated oxidative stress has been proposed as a potential pathomechanism in Parkinson's disease, the global distribution of iron accumulation in Parkinson's disease has not yet been elucidated. This study used a new magnetic resonance imaging contrast, quantitative susceptibility mapping, and state-of-the-art methods to map for the first time the whole-brain landscape of magnetostatic alterations as a surrogate for iron level changes in n = 25 patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease versus n = 50 matched controls. In addition to whole-brain analysis, a regional study including sub-segmentation of the substantia nigra into dorsal and ventral regions and qualitative assessment of susceptibility maps in single subjects were also performed. The most remarkable basal ganglia effect was an apparent magnetic susceptibility increase-consistent with iron deposition-in the dorsal substantia nigra, though an effect was also observed in ventral regions. Increased bulk susceptibility, additionally, was detected in rostral pontine areas and in a cortical pattern tightly concordant with known Parkinson's disease distributions of α-synuclein pathology. In contrast, the normally iron-rich cerebellar dentate nucleus returned a susceptibility reduction suggesting decreased iron content. These results are in agreement with previous post-mortem studies in which iron content was evaluated in specific regions of interest; however, extensive neocortical and cerebellar changes constitute a far more complex pattern of iron dysregulation than was anticipated. Such findings also stand in stark contrast to the lack of statistically significant group change using conventional magnetic resonance imaging methods namely voxel-based morphometry, cortical thickness analysis, subcortical volumetry and tract-based diffusion tensor analysis; confirming the potential of whole-brain quantitative susceptibility mapping as an in vivo biomarker in Parkinson's disease

    La pérdida de fitness de Acinetobacter baumannii resistente a colistina está asociada con una menor capacidad para crecer en condiciones deficientes en hierro.

    Motivación: En un estudio anterior demostramos que las cepas de Acinetobacter baumannii que adquieren resistencia a colistina gracias a mutaciones en el sistema PmrAB presentan reducción in vivo del fitness y disminución de la virulencia1. El objetivo del presente estudio es caracterizar el papel del hierro libre en el fitness in vitro de estas cepas. Métodos: Se utilizaron las cepas de A. baumannii ATTCC 19606 (CMI colistina = 0,5 mg/L) y RC64, su derivado colistina-resistente obtenido mediante crecimiento en presencia de colistina (CMI colistina = 64 mg/L)2. Se realizaron curvas de crecimiento durante 24 horas en Mueller Hinton Broth (MHB) y suero humano (SH). Posteriormente, se determinó el crecimiento en Mueller Hinton Agar (MHA) con o sin el quelante de hierro 2,2'-bipiridil (Bip) mediante el cultivo en gotas de concentraciones decrecientes de las cepas (de 8 a 3 Log10 UFC/mL). Además, se determinó la CMI de Bip para ambas cepas, así como la concentración de hierro necesaria para permitir el crecimiento en SH. Por último, se caracterizó el crecimiento de ambas cepas en SH suplementado con Fe2+. Resultados: Ambas cepas presentaron un crecimiento similar al ser cultivadas en MHB; sin embargo, en SH la cepa RC64 mostró un crecimiento reducido. Adicionalmente, RC64 presentó un menor crecimiento en comparación con ATCC 19606 en placas de MHA suplementadas con Bip; sin embargo, cuando se crecieron en MHA sin Bip el crecimiento fue similar. La CMI de Bip en MHB fue de 64 mg/L para la cepa ATCC 19606 y 32 mg/L para RC64. Cuando se suplementó el SH con Fe2+, ATCC 19606 creció sin necesidad de dicho suplemento, mientras que RC64 requirió la adición de 0,5 mg/L de Fe2+. La cepa RC64 presentó una mayor tasa de crecimiento en SH suplementado con Fe2+ en comparación con su crecimiento en SH no suplementado. Conclusiones: La pérdida de fitness y virulencia en Acinetobacter baumannii asociada a la resistencia a colistina adquirida por mutaciones en el sistema PmrAB podría estar relacionada con una menor capacidad para crecer en condiciones pobres en hierro libre

    Risk factors for acquisition of hepatitis C virus infection: a case series and potential implications for disease surveillance

    BACKGROUND: Transmission of hepatitis C vims (HCV) is strongly associated with use of contaminated blood products and injection drugs. Other "non-parental" modes of transmission including sexual activity have been increasingly recognized. We examined risk factors for acquiring HCV in patients who were referred to two tertiary care centers and enrolled in an antiviral therapy protocol. METHODS: Interviews of 148 patients were conducted apart from their physician evaluation using a structured questionnaire covering demographics and risk factors for HCV acquisition. RESULTS: Risk factors (blood products, injection/intranasal drugs, razor blades/ toothbrushes, body/ear piercing, occupational exposure, sexual activity) were identified in 141 (95.3%) of participants; 23 (15.5%) had one (most frequently blood or drug exposure), 41 (27.7%) had two, and 84 (53.4%) had more than two risk factors. No patient reported sexual activity as a sole risk factor. Body piercing accounted for a high number of exposures in women. Men were more likely to have exposure to street drugs but less exposure to blood products than women. Blood product exposure was less common in younger than older HCV patients. CONCLUSION: One and often multiple risk factors could be identified in nearly all HCV-infected patients seen in a referral practice. None named sexual transmission as the sole risk factor. The development of a more complete profile of factors contributing to transmission of HCV infection may assist in clinical and preventive efforts. The recognition of the potential presence of multiple risk factors may have important implications in the approach to HCV surveillance, and particularly the use of hierarchical algorithms in the study of risk factors

    Superconductivity as a probe of magnetic switching and ferromagnetic stability in Nb/Ni multilayers

    The temperature and field dependences of the AC and DC magnetic moment of superconducting and ferromagnetic Nb/Ni multilayers were measured using a SQUID magnetometer with magnetic field applied parallel to the multilayer plane. Periodic kinks in the superconducting upper critical field are evidence for nucleation of a hierarchy of Abrikosov vortex lattices aligned parallel to the multilayer. Small cusps in the low-field, isothermal DC magnetization are evidence that supercurrents are sensitive to extremely small changes in the Ni layer magnetization. Smooth ferromagnetic hysteresis is observed in the normal state, but is supplanted below the superconducting transition by two reproducible discontinuities that indicate magnetic switching of the Ni layers is tightly coupled to the supercurrents. The discontinuities are attributed to the non-dipole character of the moment near switching fields and, therefore, cannot be analyzed by standard magnetometer software. Ferromagnetic resonance spectra were measured in parallel and perpendicular DC magnetic fields at room temperature and 4.2 K, and resulting data suggest that Ni layers interact magnetically in the superconducting state

    Determination of Pericardial Adipose Tissue Increases the Prognostic Accuracy of Coronary Artery Calcification for Future Cardiovascular Events

    Objectives: Pericardial adipose tissue (PAT) is associated with coronary artery plaque accumulation and the incidence of coronary heart disease. We evaluated the possible incremental prognostic value of PAT for future cardiovascular events. Methods: 145 patients (94 males, age 60 10 years) with stable coronary artery disease underwent coronary artery calcification (CAC) scanning in a multislice CT scanner, and the volume of pericardial fat was measured. Mean observation time was 5.4 years. Results: 34 patients experienced a severe cardiac event. They had a significantly higher CAC score (1,708 +/- 2,269 vs. 538 +/- 1,150, p 400, 3.5 (1.9-5.4; p = 0.007) for scores > 800 and 5.9 (3.7-7.8; p = 0.005) for scores > 1,600. When additionally a PAT volume > 200 cm(3) was determined, there was a significant increase in the event rate and relative risk. We calculated a relative risk of 2.9 (1.9-4.2; p = 0.01) for scores > 400, 4.0 (2.1-5.0; p = 0.006) for scores > 800 and 7.1 (4.1-10.2; p = 0.005) for scores > 1,600. Conclusions:The additional determination of PAT increases the predictive power of CAC for future cardiovascular events. PAT might therefore be used as a further parameter for risk stratification.     Environmentally friendly analysis of emerging contaminants by pressurized hot water extraction-stir bar sorptive extraction-derivatization and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry

    This work describes the development, optimiza- tion, and validation of a new method for the simultaneous determination of a wide range of pharmaceuticals (beta- blockers, lipid regulators ... ) and personal care products (fragrances, UV filters, phthalates ... ) in both aqueous and solid environmental matrices. Target compounds were extracted from sediments using pressurized hot water ex- traction followed by stir bar sorptive extraction. The first stage was performed at 1,500 psi during three static extrac- tion cycles of 5 min each after optimizing the extraction temperature (50 – 150 °C) and addition of organic modifiers (% methanol) to water, the extraction solvent. Next, aqueous extracts and water samples were processed using polydime- thylsiloxane bars. Several parameters were optimized for this technique, including extraction and desorption time, ionic strength, presence of organic modifiers, and pH. Fi- nally, analytes were extracted from the bars by ultrasonic irradiation using a reduced amount of solvent (0.2 mL) prior to derivatization and gas chromatography – mass spectrome- try analysis. The optimized protocol uses minimal amounts of organic solvents (<10 mL/sample) and time ( ≈ 8 h/sam- ple) compared to previous ex isting methodologies. Low standard deviation (usually below 10 %) and limits of de- tection (sub-ppb) vouch for the applicability of the method- ology for the analysis of target compounds at trace levels.     A Small Conductance Calcium-Activated K<sup>+</sup> Channel in C. elegans, KCNL-2, Plays a Role in the Regulation of the Rate of Egg-Laying

    In the nervous system of mice, small conductance calcium-activated potassium (SK) channels function to regulate neuronal excitability through the generation of a component of the medium afterhyperpolarization that follows action potentials. In humans, irregular action potential firing frequency underlies diseases such as ataxia, epilepsy, schizophrenia and Parkinson's disease. Due to the complexity of studying protein function in the mammalian nervous system, we sought to characterize an SK channel homologue, KCNL-2, in C. elegans, a genetically tractable system in which the lineage of individual neurons was mapped from their early developmental stages. Sequence analysis of the KCNL-2 protein reveals that the six transmembrane domains, the potassium-selective pore and the calmodulin binding domain are highly conserved with the mammalian homologues. We used widefield and confocal fluorescent imaging to show that a fusion construct of KCNL-2 with GFP in transgenic lines is expressed in the nervous system of C. elegans. We also show that a KCNL-2 null strain, kcnl-2(tm1885), demonstrates a mild egg-laying defective phenotype, a phenotype that is rescued in a KCNL-2-dependent manner. Conversely, we show that transgenic lines that overexpress KCNL-2 demonstrate a hyperactive egg-laying phenotype. In this study, we show that the vulva of transgenic hermaphrodites is highly innervated by neuronal processes and by the VC4 and VC5 neurons that express GFP-tagged KCNL-2. We propose that KCNL-2 functions in the nervous system of C. elegans to regulate the rate of egg-laying. © 2013 Chotoo et al
