Aggregation patterns of macroendoparasites in phylogenetically related fish hosts
doi:10.1017/ S0031182010000491Macroparasites are generally aggregated within their hosts with infection and aggregation levels resulting from a continuous arms race between maintaining high mating probability and host mortality low for which host and environmentally related factors contribute to some extent. Here, infection and aggregation patterns of the macroendoparasites infecting the flatfish Citharus linguatula, Arnoglossus laterna, Lepidorhombus boscii, Scophthalmus rhombus and Platichthys flesus in 3 areas along the Portuguese coast were analysed. Of the 21 macroendoparasite species found only 1 infected all hosts and most were host or area exclusive. For each host-parasite system, values of the indices varied between areas and macroendoparasites were not always aggregated; in fact, some macroendoparasites were generally uniformly distributed, which can be related to specific density-dependent regulation mechanisms. No general pattern was found for infection or aggregation levels of the 3 species infecting more than 2 hosts along the Portuguese coast, i.e. Lecithochirium rufoviride, Nybelinia lingualis and Anisakis simplex s.l., suggesting that regulation mechanisms are not species specific but are locally determined, with host ecology playing a significant role
Maternal smoking: a life course blood pressure determinant?
Introduction: Exposure to maternal smoking early in life may affect blood pressure (BP) control mechanisms. We examined the association between maternal smoking (before conception, during pregnancy, and 4 years after delivery) and BP in preschool children.
Methods: We evaluated 4295 of Generation XXI children, recruited at birth in 2005–2006 and reevaluated at the age of 4. At birth, information was collected by face-to-face interview and additionally abstracted from clinical records. At 4-year follow-up, interviews were performed and children’s BP measured. Linear regression models were fitted to estimate the association between maternal smoking and children’s BP.
Results: Children of smoking mothers presented significantly higher BP levels. After adjustment for maternal education, gestational hypertensive disorders, and child’s body mass index, children exposed during pregnancy to maternal smoking presented a higher systolic BP (SBP) z-score (β = 0.08, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.04 to 0.14). In crude models, maternal smoking was associated with higher SBP z-score at every assessed period. However, after adjustment, an attenuation of the association estimates occurred (β = 0.08, 95% CI 0.03 to 0.13 before conception; β = 0.07, 95%CI 0.02 to 0.12; β = 0.04, 95%CI −0.02 to 0.10; and β = 0.06, 95%CI 0.00 to 0.13 for the first, second, and third pregnancy trimesters, respectively; and β = 0.07, 95%CI 0.02 to 0.12 for current maternal smoking). No significant association was observed for diastolic BP z-score levels.
Conclusion: Maternal smoking before, during, and after pregnancy was independently associated with systolic BP z-score in preschool children. This study provides additional evidence to the public health relevance of maternal smoking cessation programs if early cardiovascular health of children is envisaged.
Implications: Using observational longitudinal data from the birth cohort Generation XXI, this study showed that exposure to maternal smoking—before pregnancy, during pregnancy, and 4 years after delivery—was associated with a systolic BP-raising effect in children at the age of 4. The findings of this study add an important insight into the need to support maternal smoke-free environments in order to provide long-term cardiovascular benefit, starting as early as possible in life.Generation XXI has been funded by the Operational Health Programme XXI Health, Community support framework III (co-funded by Feder), Administração Regional de Saúde do Norte, Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian and Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (SFRH/BSAB/113778/2015; PD/BD/105824/2014; PD/BD/105827/2014; F-COMP-01-0124-FEDER-011008; FCT—PTDC/SAU-ESA/105033/2008). Valuing travel time changes: a case of short-term or long-term choices?
The valuation of travel time is of crucial importance in many transport decisions. Most studies make use of data framed around short-term decisions such as route choice. However, people may have a greater ability to trade time and money in a longer term setting, such as when considering changes in residential or employment locations. We study the value of travel time in both the short and long-term, finding differences in the valuations. Given the importance of these valuations for policy making, our results call for more research into how time-cost trade-offs should be represented with stated preference
Cryptic species of Didymobothrium rudolphii (Cestoda : Spathebothriidea) from the sand sole, Solea lascaris, off the Portuguese coast, with an analysis of their molecules, morphology, ultrastructure and phylogeny
Didymobothrium rudolphii (Cestoda: Spathebothriidea) was collected seasonally from the sand sole, Solea lascaris, off the northern, central and Southern areas of the Portuguese coast. Morphological and molecular analyses were conducted in order to examine the possible existence of cryptic species and to facilitate the circumscription of their morphological boundaries. Data were compared between D. rudolphii specimens from each of the 3 geographical areas and 4 seasons, and principal components analysis of 18 morphological characters was used to detect differences. Two distinct genotypes were present with sequence divergences of 1 center dot 9%. and 2 center dot 1%, in the large Subunit (lsrDNA) and second internal transcribed spacer (ITS-2) of ribosomal DNA (rDNA), respectively. The less common 'central' genotype was present only off the central area from summer to winter, whereas the 'common' genotype was present throughout the year off the northern and southern areas, but only during spring in the central area, No sequence variation was found within each genotype. The presence of 2 distinct genetic entities was supported by morphological analyses, which showed the 'central' genotype specimens to be more slender and elongate, although morphometric ranges overlapped considerably for most characters. Molecular phylogenetic analysis of 4 of the 3 known genera of the Spathebothriidea showed Spathebothrium to be the earliest branching lineage and the 2 genotypes of Didymobothrium formed a sister group to Cyathocephalus. The concordance of genetic differences with variation in host diet according to season and locality could account for sympatric speciation occurring in the central region of the Portuguese coast
M694V no gene MEFV). Iniciou colchicina e
kawasaki disease in a young infant: diagnostic challenges
Kawasaki disease (KD) is a multisystem vasculitis
condition with a relatively unknown etiology. It has
a high prevalence in children ages 6 months to 5
years, and patients often present with high fever,
rash, cervical lymphadenopathy and mucocutaneous
abnormalities. Visceral manifestations can
be present, being coronary complications the most
frequent. There is no diagnostic test for KD, its presentation
can be complete or incomplete and, in
some cases, it can be atypical. We report a case of
a 3-month-old infant with 3-weeks of fever and
aseptic meningitis. Infectious diseases were excluded
and there was no response to antibiotics.
Echocardiography was normal in the second week.
Genetic test for CINCA syndrome was negative. In
the third week, dilatation of coronary arteries determined
Kawasaki disease’s diagnosis. Prolonged
fever, accompanied by nonspecific clinical symptoms
were the only manifestations, becoming a
challenging diagnosis. KD must be considered
when prolonged fever is present, mainly in young
children in whom the incomplete forms of the disease are more frequent
Short-term versus long-term changes in the benthic communities of a small coastal lagoon: implications for ecological status assessment
The characteristic high variability and low predictability of coastal lagoons, due
to strong changes in marine and freshwater inputs, make these ecosystems an interesting casestudy.
The small Melides landlocked coastal lagoon in SW Portugal is a paradigmatic example,
with a biological community highly stressed by these phenomena. Benthic macroinvertebrate samples were collected in 1998/99 and 2009 and each year, in different seasons and addressing different environmental conditions influenced by the connection to the sea and rainfall regime.
Major spatial and temporal patterns in benthic communities were investigated using some invertebrate attributes (e.g. community composition, density, species richness and diversity). A very low taxonomic species richness and diversity was found in the Melides lagoon and only a much reduced number of species occurred along all sampling periods and in both sampling campaigns.
Although the colonization events play a crucial role, the persistence of the observed species was mainly associated to abiotic factors, such as salinity, temperature and dissolved oxygen. Despite the potential reduction in anthropogenic pressure, by the construction of a sewage treatment plant and a reduction of urban occupation, the ecological status did not improve and the high level of natural environmental variably in the lagoon seems to be the dominant stressor influencing benthic invertebrate communitie
