Ferromagnetism in the Hubbard model with Topological/Non-Topological Flat Bands
We introduce and study two classes of Hubbard models with magnetic flux or
with spin-orbit coupling, which have a flat lowest band separated from other
bands by a nonzero gap. We study the Chern number of the flat bands, and find
that it is zero for the first class but can be nontrivial in the second. We
also prove that the introduction of on-site Coulomb repulsion leads to
ferromagnetism in both the classes.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure
Quantum spin Hall effect and spin-charge separation in a kagome lattice
A two-dimensional kagome lattice is theoretically investigated within a
simple tight-binding model, which includes the nearest neighbor hopping term
and the intrinsic spin-orbit interaction between the next nearest neighbors. By
using the topological winding properties of the spin-edge states on the
complex-energy Riemann surface, the spin Hall conductance is obtained to be
quantized as () in insulating phases. This result keeps
consistent with the numerical linear-response calculation and the
\textbf{Z} topological invariance analysis. When the sample boundaries
are connected in twist, by which two defects with flux are introduced, we
obtain the spin-charge separated solitons at 1/3 (or 2/3) filling.Comment: 13 NJP pages, 7 figure

Native American Presence
In this contribution to the Hawthorne in Context volume, Laura Mielke considers the appearance of Native American characters and cultures across Hawthorne’s tales and novels. In particular, she traces how his use of autochthonous legend, progression through social stages, warfare, captivity, conversion, and masquerade all point to the history of colonialism and the implementation of federal Indian removal policy at the highpoint of his writing career. Though Hawthorne expressed antipathy concerning the use of indigenous materials in contemporary literature, he simply could not write Native Americans out of historic or contemporary existence

Design of multivariable feedback control systems via spectral assignment
The applicability of spectral assignment techniques to the design of multivariable feedback control systems was investigated. A fractional representation design procedure for unstable plants is presented and illustrated with an example. A computer aided design software package implementing eigenvalue/eigenvector design procedures is described. A design example which illustrates the use of the program is explained
Transforming Captivity Narratives in Kevin Willmott’s The Only Good Indian (2009)
In this essay, I closely examine Kevin Willmott's The Only Good Indian (2009), a post-modern filmic reflection on the Native boarding school experience, to think about how narrative forms associated with captivity of white subjects mutate in the context of institutional violence. In particular, I consider the film's depiction of the boarding school experience in light of American Indian accounts of such; the film's use of the gothic-horror genre to capture the trauma of the boarding school student; and the film's interrogation of the Western genre in light of repressed histories of colonialism
Design of multivariable feedback control systems via spectral assignment
Applied research in the area of spectral assignment in multivariable systems is reported. A frequency domain technique for determining the set of all stabilizing controllers for a single feedback loop multivariable system is described. It is shown that decoupling and tracking are achievable using this procedure. The technique is illustrated with a simple example
