    Communicating simulation outputs of mesoscale coastal evolution to specialist and non-specialist audiences

    Coastal geomorphologists and engineers worldwide are increasingly facing the non-trivial challenge of visualising and communicating mesoscale modelling assumptions, uncertainties and outcomes to both coastal specialists and decision-makers. Visualisation of simulation outcomes is a non-trivial problem because the more abstract scientific visualisation techniques favoured by specialists for data exploration and hypothesis-testing are not always as successful at engaging decision-makers and planners. In this paper, we show how the risk of simulation model outcomes becoming disconnected from more realistic visualisations of model outcomes can be minimised by using the Coastal Modelling Environment (CoastalME). CoastalME is a modelling framework for coastal mesoscale morphological modelling that can achieve close linkages between the scientific model abstractions, in the form of lines, areas and volumes, and the 3D representation of topographic and bathymetric surfaces and shallow sub-surface sediment composition. We propose and illustrate through the study case of Happisburgh (eastern England, UK), a transparent methodology to merge the required variety of data types and formats into a 3D-thickness model that is used to initialise a simulation.     Scaling properties of a low-actuation pressure microfluidic valve

    Using basic physical arguments, we present a design and method for the fabrication of microfluidic valves using multilayer soft lithography. These on-off valves have extremely low actuation pressures and can be used to fabricate active functions, such as pumps and mixers in integrated microfluidic chips. We characterized the performance of the valves by measuring both the actuation pressure and flow resistance over a wide range of design parameters, and compared them to both finite element simulations and alternative valve geometries

    Can Vertical Profiles of Tropospheric Methane on Titan Be Derived from Radio-Occultation Soundings?

    The intensity of the received signal at Earth in the radio occultations of Titan is attenuated both by refractive defocusing and pressure-induced absorption from N2-N2 and CH4-N2 pairs. Because the absorption strength is different for the two sets of pairs, matching the retrieved absorptivity profile can in principle yield the vertical variation in gaseous methane in the troposphere. There are two factors that make this difficult. The first is the propagation of noise in the phase and amplitude of the received signal in the absorption retrieval. The phase data is first inverted to retrieve vertical profiles of refractivity, from which the refractive defocusing is calculated. This is then subtracted from the observed. intensity attenuation of the received signal to generate a profile of atmospheric absorption. The second problem is the uncertainty in the pressure-induced absorption coefficients. Laboratory data at radio wavelengths is only available near room temperature (see, e.g., [1] for N2-N2), and the extrapolation to the low temperatures in Titan's troposphere is not well established. Ab initio calculations by Borysow et al. [2, 3] provide absorption coefficients at low temperatures and long wavelengths, but their accuracy has come into question. We present examples from Cassini radio occultations of Titan to illustrate the difficulties. For methane mole fractions in the lower troposphere comparable to that inferred from the Huygens probe (approximately 0.05), it will be difficult to separate the contributions of N2-N2 collisions from those of N2-CH4, collisions to the retrieved absorption. However, higher concentrations of CH4 and/or a higher signal-to-noise ratio from a future uplink experiment could result in a successful separation of the two components. However, key to this are highly accurate estimates of the absorption from a combination of laboratory measurements at love temperatures and long wavelengths, and possibly improved theoretical calculations

    Conversion to eslicarbazepine acetate monotherapy: A pooled analysis of 2 phase III studies.

    OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy and safety of eslicarbazepine acetate (ESL) monotherapy. METHODS: This post hoc pooled analysis of 2 randomized double-blind studies (093-045 and -046) included adults with partial-onset seizures medically uncontrolled by 1 or 2 antiepileptic drugs (AEDs). Following the baseline period (8 weeks), eligible patients were randomized 2:1 to receive ESL 1,600 mg or 1,200 mg once daily for 18 weeks; the primary endpoint was study exit by meeting predefined exit criteria (signifying worsening seizure control). In each study, treatment was considered effective if the upper 95% confidence limit for exit rate was lower than the historical control threshold (65.3%). RESULTS: Pooled exit rates were as follows: ESL 1,600 mg = 20.6% (95% confidence interval: 15.6%-26.8%); ESL 1,200 mg = 30.8% (23.0%-40.5%). Use of 2 baseline AEDs or rescue medication, US location, epilepsy duration ≄20 years, and higher maximum baseline seizure frequency were associated with higher exit risks. Median percent reductions in standardized seizure frequency between baseline and the 18-week double-blind period were as follows: ESL 1,600 mg = 43.2%; ESL 1,200 mg = 35.7%; baseline carbamazepine use was associated with smaller reductions. Safety profiles were similar between ESL doses. CONCLUSIONS: Exit rates for ESL monotherapy (1,600 mg and 1,200 mg once daily) were lower than the historical control threshold, irrespective of baseline AED use and region, with no additional safety concerns identified. Clinical factors and location clearly influence treatment responses in conversion-to-monotherapy trials. CLASSIFICATION OF EVIDENCE: This pooled analysis provides Class IV evidence that for adults with medically uncontrolled partial-onset seizures, ESL monotherapy is well tolerated and effective

    Fusion of interpolated frames superresolution in the presence of atmospheric optical turbulence

    An extension of the fusion of interpolated frames superresolution (FIF SR) method to perform SR in the presence of atmospheric optical turbulence is presented. The goal of such processing is to improve the performance of imaging systems impacted by turbulence. We provide an optical transfer function analysis that illustrates regimes where significant degradation from both aliasing and turbulence may be present in imaging systems. This analysis demonstrates the potential need for simultaneous SR and turbulence mitigation (TM). While the FIF SR method was not originally proposed to address this joint restoration problem, we believe it is well suited for this task. We propose a variation of the FIF SR method that has a fusion parameter that allows it to transition from traditional diffraction-limited SR to pure TM with no SR as well as a continuum in between. This fusion parameter balances subpixel resolution, needed for SR, with the amount of temporal averaging, needed for TM and noise reduction. In addition, we develop a model of the interpolation blurring that results from the fusion process, as a function of this tuning parameter. The blurring model is then incorporated into the overall degradation model that is addressed in the restoration step of the FIF SR method. This innovation benefits the FIF SR method in all applications. We present a number of experimental results to demonstrate the efficacy of the FIF SR method in different levels of turbulence. Simulated imagery with known ground truth is used for a detailed quantitative analysis. Three real infrared image sequences are also used.     Super Soldiers: The Ethical, Legal and Operational Implications (Part 2)

    This is the second chapter of two on military human enhancement. In the first chapter, the authors outlined past and present efforts aimed at enhancing the minds and bodies of our warfighters with the broader goal of creating the “super soldiers” of tomorrow, all before exploring a number of distinctions—natural vs. artificial, external vs. internal, enhancement vs. therapy, enhancement vs. disenhancement, and enhancement vs. engineering—that are critical to the definition of military human enhancement and understanding the problems it poses. The chapter then advanced a working definition of enhancement as efforts that aim to “improve performance, appearance, or capability besides what is necessary to achieve, sustain, or restore health.” It then discussed a number of variables that must be taken into consideration when applying this definition in a military context. In this second chapter, drawing on that definition and some of the controversies already mentioned, the authors set out the relevant ethical, legal, and operational challenges posed by military enhancement. They begin by considering some of the implications for international humanitarian law and then shift to US domestic law. Following that, the authors examine military human enhancement from a virtue ethics approach, and finally outline some potential consequences for military operations more generally
