    On the Voting Power of an Alliance and the Subsequent Power of its Members

    Even, and in fact chiefly, if two or more players in a voting gamehave on a binary issue independent opinions, they may haveinterest to form a single voting alliance giving an average gainof influence for all of them. Here, assuming the usualindependence of votes, we first study the alliance voting powerand obtain new results in the so-called asymptotic limit for whichthe number of players is large enough and the alliance weightremains a small fraction of the total of the weights. Then, wepropose to replace the voting game inside the alliance by a randomgame which allows new possibilities. The validity of theasymptotic limit and the possibility of new alliances are examinedby considering the decision process in the Council of Ministers ofthe European Union.Voting Power; Alliance

    Bending laminations on convex hulls of anti-de Sitter quasicircles

    Let λ−\lambda_- and λ+\lambda_+ be two bounded measured laminations on the hyperbolic disk H2\mathbb H^2, which "strongly fill" (definition below). We consider the left earthquakes along λ−\lambda_- and λ+\lambda_+, considered as maps from the universal Teichm\"uller space T\mathcal T to itself, and we prove that the composition of those left earthquakes has a fixed point. The proof uses anti-de Sitter geometry. Given a quasi-symmetric homeomorphism u:RP1→RP1u:{\mathbb RP}^1\to {\mathbb RP}^1, the boundary of the convex hull in AdS3AdS^3 of its graph in RP1×RP1≃∂AdS3{\mathbb RP}^1\times{\mathbb RP}^1\simeq \partial AdS^3 is the disjoint union of two embedded copies of the hyperbolic plane, pleated along measured geodesic laminations. Our main result is that any pair of bounded measured laminations that "strongly fill" can be obtained in this manner.Comment: 16 page

    Review of the current status of RAS mutation testing in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC): Flash-RAS study

    Présentation PosterInternational audienceOBJECTIVES: In 2013, it was shown that mutations in KRAS exons 3 and 4, or NRAS exons 2 to 4 had a similar effect. The primary objective was to assess the practices in conducting RAS testing in 2014. The secondary objectives were to describe the evolution of the RAS testing prescription rates from 2011, the process and time required to obtain the results, and to analyze their impact on the therapeutic strategy. METHODS: FLASH-RAS is an observational retrospective French multicenter study. RESULTS: 375 mCRC patients diagnosed and initiating a 1st line treatment (L1) between March and June 2014 were analyzed. For 90.1% of the patients (IC95%= [87.1%; 93.2%]), a genotyping request for RAS biomarkers was made in L1, i.e. a significantly increased rate compared to 2011 (81.1% in 2011, p<0.001). For 75% of the patients, the request was made before or at least one month after the diagnosis of the first metastases (1st M). No increase was observed in the median and mean times to obtain the test results between 2011 and 2014 despite the increased number of exons tested. CONCLUSIONS: In 2014, the rate of RAS genotyping requests has been increasing since 2011. For a majority of patients, the request is made before or at the latest one month after 1st M diagnosis. Nevertheless, for 24.5% of the patients, the request is made more than one month after 1st M diagnosis, which is not compatible with an informed treatment decision in L1

    Academic Engagement in Public and Political Discourse: Proceedings from the Michigan Meeting

    This report and the conference it summarizes are an examination of how we, as academics, practice our craft; how we work to make it more relevant to broader publics and responsive to pressing societal problems. In May 2015, more than 40 speakers (including 4 University Presidents) and 225 registrants attended a three day conference at the University of Michigan to focus on four key themes: (1) What is engagement and should we do it? (2) What are the ground rules for public and political engagement? (3) What models have worked, and what can we learn from them? (4) What are the obstacles to engagement, and how can they be overcome? The contents of this report are about the kinds of research we conduct, but even more, it is about the public meaning and goals of that work. Ultimately, it is about who we are as a university and what it means to be an academic in a society facing complex scientific, technological, and social challenges.     Damaged DNA Binding Protein 2 Plays a Role in Breast Cancer Cell Growth

    The Damaged DNA binding protein 2 (DDB2), is involved in nucleotide excision repair as well as in other biological processes in normal cells, including transcription and cell cycle regulation. Loss of DDB2 function may be related to tumor susceptibility. However, hypothesis of this study was that DDB2 could play a role in breast cancer cell growth, resulting in its well known interaction with the proliferative marker E2F1 in breast neoplasia. DDB2 gene was overexpressed in estrogen receptor (ER)-positive (MCF-7 and T47D), but not in ER-negative breast cancer (MDA-MB231 and SKBR3) or normal mammary epithelial cell lines. In addition, DDB2 expression was significantly (3.0-fold) higher in ER-positive than in ER-negative tumor samples (P = 0.0208) from 16 patients with breast carcinoma. Knockdown of DDB2 by small interfering RNA in MCF-7 cells caused a decrease in cancer cell growth and colony formation. Inversely, introduction of the DDB2 gene into MDA-MB231 cells stimulated growth and colony formation. Cell cycle distribution and 5 Bromodeoxyuridine incorporation by flow cytometry analysis showed that the growth-inhibiting effect of DDB2 knockdown was the consequence of a delayed G1/S transition and a slowed progression through the S phase of MCF-7 cells. These results were supported by a strong decrease in the expression of S phase markers (Proliferating Cell Nuclear Antigen, cyclin E and dihydrofolate reductase). These findings demonstrate for the first time that DDB2 can play a role as oncogene and may become a promising candidate as a predictive marker in breast cancer

    Long-Term Alterations of Cytokines and Growth Factors Expression in Irradiated Tissues and Relation with Histological Severity Scoring

    PURPOSE: Beside its efficacy in cancer treatment, radiotherapy induces degeneration of healthy tissues within the irradiated area. The aim of this study was to analyze the variations of proinflammatory (IL-1α, IL-2, IL-6, TNF-α, IFN-γ), profibrotic (TGF-β1), proangiogneic (VEGF) and stem cell mobilizing (GM-CSF) cytokines and growth factors in an animal model of radiation-induced tissue degeneration. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 24 rats were irradiated unilaterally on the hindlimb at a monodose of 30 Gy. Six weeks (n=8), 6 months (n=8) and 1 year (n=8) after irradiation the mediators expression in skin and muscle were analyzed using Western blot and the Bio-Plex® protein array (BPA) technology. Additional histological severity for fibrosis, inflammation, vascularity and cellularity alterations scoring was defined from histology and immnunohistochemistry analyses. RESULTS: A significant increase of histological severity scoring was found in irradiated tissue. Skin tissues were more radio-sensitive than muscle. A high level of TGF-β1 expression was found throughout the study and a significant relation was evidenced between TGF-β1 expression and fibrosis scoring. Irradiated tissue showed a chronic inflammation (IL-2 and TNF-α significantly increased). Moreover a persistent expression of GM-CSF and VEGF was found in all irradiated tissues. The vascular score was related to TGF-β1 expression and the cellular alterations score was significantly related with the level of IL-2, VEGF and GM-CSF. CONCLUSION: The results achieved in the present study underline the complexity and multiplicity of radio-induced alterations of cytokine network. It offers many perspectives of development, for the comprehension of the mechanisms of late injuries or for the histological and molecular evaluation of the mode of action and the efficacy of rehabilitation techniques
