Modulational instability of spatially broadband nonlinear optical pulses in four-state atomic systems
The modulational instability of broadband optical pulses in a four-state
atomic system is investigated. In particular, starting from a recently derived
generalized nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation, a wave-kinetic equation is
derived. A comparison between coherent and random phase wave states is made. It
is found that the spatial spectral broadening can contribute to the nonlinear
stability of ultra-short optical pulses. In practical terms, this could be
achieved by using random phase plate techniques.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev.
Amplification and generation of ultra-intense twisted laser pulses via stimulated Raman scattering
Twisted Laguerre-Gaussian lasers, with orbital angular momentum and
characterised by doughnut shaped intensity profiles, provide a transformative
set of tools and research directions in a growing range of fields and
applications, from super-resolution microcopy and ultra-fast optical
communications to quantum computing and astrophysics. The impact of twisted
light is widening as recent numerical calculations provided solutions to
long-standing challenges in plasma-based acceleration by allowing for high
gradient positron acceleration. The production of ultrahigh intensity twisted
laser pulses could then also have a broad influence on relativistic
laser-matter interactions. Here we show theoretically and with ab-initio
three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, that stimulated Raman
backscattering can generate and amplify twisted lasers to Petawatt intensities
in plasmas. This work may open new research directions in non-linear optics and
high energy density science, compact plasma based accelerators and light
sources.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures, 1 tabl
Wrist Ultrasound Analysis Of Patients With Early Rheumatoid Arthritis.
In the present study, we evaluated 42 wrists using the semi-quantitative scales power Doppler ultrasound (PDUS) and gray scale ultrasound (GSUS) with scores ranging from 0 to 3 and correlated the results with clinical, laboratory and radiographic data. Twenty-one patients (17 women and 4 men) with rheumatoid arthritis according to criteria of the American College of Rheumatology were enrolled in the study from September 2008 to July 2009 at Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP). The average disease duration was 14 months. The patients were 66.6% Caucasians and 33.3% non-Caucasians, with a mean age of 42 and 41 years, respectively. A dorsal longitudinal scan was performed by ultrasound on the radiocarpal and midcarpal joints using GE LOGIQ XP-linear ultrasound and a high frequency (8-10 MHz) transducer. All patients were X-rayed, and the Larsen score was determined for the joints, with grades ranging from 0 to V. This study showed significant correlations between clinical, sonographic and laboratory data: GSUS and swollen right wrist (r = 0.546), GSUS of right wrist and swelling of left wrist (r = 0.511), PDUS of right wrist and pain in left wrist (r = 0.436), PDUS of right wrist and C-reactive protein (r = 0.466). Ultrasound can be considered a useful tool in the diagnosis of synovitis in early rheumatoid arthritis mainly when the anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide and rheumatoid factor are negative, and can lead to an early change in the therapeutic decision.4411-
Photon Orbital Angular Momentum and Mass in a Plasma Vortex
We analyse the Anderson-Higgs mechanism of photon mass acquisition in a
plasma and study the contribution to the mass from the orbital angular momentum
acquired by a beam of photons when it crosses a spatially structured charge
distribution. To this end we apply Proca-Maxwell equations in a static plasma
with a particular spatial distribution of free charges, notably a plasma
vortex, that is able to impose orbital angular momentum (OAM) onto light. In
addition to the mass acquisition of the conventional Anderson-Higgs mechanism,
we find that the photon acquires an additional mass from the OAM and that this
mass reduces the Proca photon mass.Comment: Four pages, no figures. Error corrections, improved notation, refined

Selection of common bean segregating populations using genetic and phenotypic parameters and RAPD markers.
In an attempt to identify strategies for choosing common bean segregating populations, the diallel parameters, the contribution of homozygous (m+a?) and heterozygous (d) loci, the heritability (h2a), the genetic distance (RAPD), and the selection potential (Z) were estimated in a study carried out in two stages. In the first, 30 hybrid combinations (partial diallel) were assessed in the F2 and F3 generations. Increasing grain yield was due dominance effect (d) although, both GCA and SCA were significant. d varied greatly and gave an information like SCA, however h2a alone was not indicative of success in a breeding program. In the second stage, five populations with lesser d and five with higher were selected, and twenty-seven families were taken from each, which were assessed with the parents and seven controls. The estimated parameters were used to check those from the first stage. There was partial agreement among the estimates and the percentages of lines superior to Pérola cultivar, which suggests that two or more estimates are needed to identify the promising segregating populations
Mass for Plasma Photons from Gauge Symmetry Breaking
We derive the effective masses for photons in unmagnetized plasma waves using
a quantum field theory with two vector fields (gauge fields). In order to
properly define the quantum field degrees of freedom we re-derive the classical
wave equations on light-front gauge. This is needed because the usual scalar
potential of electromagnetism is, in quantum field theory, not a physical
degree of freedom that renders negative energy eigenstates. We also consider a
background local fluid metric that allows for a covariant treatment of the
problem. The different masses for the longitudinal (plasmon) and transverse
photons are in our framework due to the local fluid metric. We apply the
mechanism of mass generation by gauge symmetry breaking recently proposed by
the authors by giving a non-trivial vacuum-expectation-value to the second
vector field (gauge field). The Debye length is interpreted as an
effective compactification length and we compute an explicit solution for the
large gauge transformations that correspond to the specific mass eigenvalues
derived here. Using an usual quantum field theory canonical quantization we
obtain the usual results in the literature. Although none of these ingredients
are new to physicist, as far as the authors are aware it is the first time that
such constructions are applied to Plasma Physics. Also we give a physical
interpretation (and realization) for the second vector field in terms of the
plasma background in terms of known physical phenomena.
Addendum: It is given a short proof that equation (10) is wrong, therefore
equations (12-17) are meaningless. The remaining results are correct being
generic derivations for nonmagnetized plasmas derived in a covariant QFT
framework.Comment: v1: 1+6 pages v2: Several discussions rewritten; Abstract rewritten;

Alternative fidelity measure for quantum states
We propose an alternative fidelity measure (namely, a measure of the degree
of similarity) between quantum states and benchmark it against a number of
properties of the standard Uhlmann-Jozsa fidelity. This measure is a simple
function of the linear entropy and the Hilbert-Schmidt inner product between
the given states and is thus, in comparison, not as computationally demanding.
It also features several remarkable properties such as being jointly concave
and satisfying all of "Jozsa's axioms". The trade-off, however, is that it is
supermultiplicative and does not behave monotonically under quantum operations.
In addition, new metrics for the space of density matrices are identified and
the joint concavity of the Uhlmann-Jozsa fidelity for qubit states is
established.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures. v2 includes minor changes, new references and
