A New Approach to Canonical Quantization of the Radiation Damping

Inspired in some works about quantization of dissipative systems, in particular of the damped harmonic oscillator\cite{MB,RB,12}, we consider the dissipative system of a charge interacting with its own radiation, which originates the radiation damping (RD). Using the indirect Lagrangian representation we obtained a Lagrangian formalism with a Chern-Simons-like term. A Hamiltonian analysis is also done, what leads to the quantization of the system.Comment: 5 page

Hyperscaling in the Domany-Kinzel Cellular Automaton

An apparent violation of hyperscaling at the endpoint of the critical line in the Domany-Kinzel stochastic cellular automaton finds an elementary resolution upon noting that the order parameter is discontinuous at this point. We derive a hyperscaling relation for such transitions and discuss applications to related examples.Comment: 8 pages, latex, no figure

    Supersymmetrization of the Radiation Damping

We construct a supersymmetrized version of the model to the radiation damping \cite{03} introduced by the present authors \cite{ACWF}. We dicuss its symmetries and the corresponding conserved Noether charges. It is shown this supersymmetric version provides a supersymmetric generalization of the Galilei algebra obtained in \cite{ACWF}. We have shown that the supersymmetric action can be splited into dynamically independent external and internal sectors.Comment: 9 page

Absorbing boundaries in the conserved Manna model

The conserved Manna model with a planar absorbing boundary is studied in various space dimensions. We present a heuristic argument that allows one to compute the surface critical exponent in one dimension analytically. Moreover, we discuss the mean field limit that is expected to be valid in d>4 space dimensions and demonstrate how the corresponding partial differential equations can be solved.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures; v1 was changed by replacing the co-authors name "L\"ubeck" with "Lubeck" (metadata only

Planning forest recreation: environmental economic instruments and the public participation

In Portugal there is a growing demand for natural areas that provide a wide range of outdoor recreation. This paper focuses on the particular case of the Mata Nacional de Leiria (Leiria National Forest). This is a pine tree forest with 11,000 hectares and eight centuries of history. It has always been a public forest with open access to everyone, a fact that contributes to different kinds of use and benefits (walking, cycling, picnics, collecting firewood, fruits and berries, and other recreation activities). The proximity to a major urban and industrial centre, on one hand, and to a very popular beach coast, on the other, makes this a resource that is widely used by both residents and visitors. In the future there is the possibility of implementing a set of actions to improve forest amenities and recreation, and later the emergence of environmental tourism activities and equipment. In this context, we want to know the economic valuation that actual users attach to these recreation improvements, but also realize their preferences and opinions regarding this project. For this purpose we designed, tested and applied a double bounded dichotomous choice contingent valuation questionnaire. The results presented in this paper focus on responses to attitudinal and follow-up questions. More than 70% of respondents have positively assessed the proposed improvements to the study area and about 40% enhanced their personal opinion on the type of interventions that they consider most appropriate. Answers focus the priority areas of intervention in the Mata Nacional de Leiria, the main concerns in its development, the type of actions that should (and should not) be implemented, respondents willingness to actively take part and, also, what the public authorities' role should be. At this stage, where Mata Nacional de Leiria is being considered in terms of future recreation and tourism offers, the results obtained provide important contributions and enhance the contingent valuation survey as a tool to support recreation planning, promoting public participation and the political decision-making process

Low-field microwave absorption and magnetoresistance in iron nanostructures grown by electrodeposition on n-type lightly-doped silicon substrates

In this study we investigate magnetic properties, surface morphology and crystal structure in iron nanoclusters electrodeposited on lightly-doped (100) n-type silicon substrates. Our goal is to investigate the spin injection and detection in the Fe/Si lateral structures. The samples obtained under electric percolation were characterized by magnetoresistive and magnetic resonance measurements with cycling the sweeping applied field in order to understand the spin dynamics in the as-produced samples. The observed hysteresis in the magnetic resonance spectra, plus the presence of a broad peak in the non-saturated regime confirming the low field microwave absorption (LFMA), were correlated to the peaks and slopes found in the magnetoresistance curves. The results suggest long range spin injection and detection in low resistive silicon and the magnetic resonance technique is herein introduced as a promising tool for analysis of electric contactless magnetoresistive samples.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure

Heterogeneous-k-core versus Bootstrap Percolation on Complex Networks

We introduce the heterogeneous-kk-core, which generalizes the kk-core, and contrast it with bootstrap percolation. Vertices have a threshold kik_i which may be different at each vertex. If a vertex has less than kik_i neighbors it is pruned from the network. The heterogeneous-kk-core is the sub-graph remaining after no further vertices can be pruned. If the thresholds kik_i are 11 with probability ff or k3k \geq 3 with probability (1f)(1-f), the process forms one branch of an activation-pruning process which demonstrates hysteresis. The other branch is formed by ordinary bootstrap percolation. We show that there are two types of transitions in this heterogeneous-kk-core process: the giant heterogeneous-kk-core may appear with a continuous transition and there may be a second, discontinuous, hybrid transition. We compare critical phenomena, critical clusters and avalanches at the heterogeneous-kk-core and bootstrap percolation transitions. We also show that network structure has a crucial effect on these processes, with the giant heterogeneous-kk-core appearing immediately at a finite value for any f>0f > 0 when the degree distribution tends to a power law P(q)qγP(q) \sim q^{-\gamma} with γ<3\gamma < 3.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
