    Assessing the use of social media in physician assistant education.

    Objectives: This study aims to assess physician assistant (PA) students\u27 experiences with social media (SM) as a part of their medical education. Methods: The study is split into two phases: Phase 1- A cross-sectional survey emailed to all PA students at four PA school campuses to assess students\u27 prior SM experiences (226 responses, 71.1% response rate); and Phase 2- Inclusion of SM educational resources, via Twitter, within lectures performed at two PA schools. A phase-2 survey assessed students\u27 opinions of educational SM (50 responses, 59.5% response rate) and SM usage was tracked. Results: The phase-1 survey respondents indicated that 97.3% (n=220) use social media; often used as a part of their education, 65% (n=147) informally and 2.7% (n=6) formally incorporated. Students most commonly use Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram, but rarely use Twitter. Currently using SM for medical education was significantly associated with predicting that future PA education will formally include SM [r Conclusions: Many PA students are currently using various forms of social media to augment their education. Most PA students support formal incorporation of social media into their education. PA educators should consider using our data and methods of social media inclusion when designing curricula and while clinically precepting PA students

    The introduction of an holistic design approach through a teaching company scheme

    Traditional design approaches separate the various functions of design such as material selection, performance modelling and tolerance specification into discrete entities. Whilst this allows more focused methods to be used at each stage, areas of conflict or benefit may be overlooked, and the designer is left to bring the loose ends together. This paper looks at a synthesis approach that draws upon a number of current design themes. The design process is considered along with various aspects such as product development, design-for-`X' methodologies and material selection. The need for the preservation of design knowledge and reasoning, the so called wh-? questions, within the process are considered along with various models of the design process. The paper draws these various aspects together to form a more holistic approach to design. The application of this technique within the Teaching Company Scheme is briefly discussed

    Found: High Surface Brightness Compact Galaxies

    We are using the 2dF spectrograph to make a survey of all objects (`stars' and `galaxies') in a 12 sq.deg region towards the Fornax cluster. We have discovered a population of compact emission-line galaxies unresolved on photographic sky survey plates and therefore missing in most galaxy surveys based on such material. These galaxies are as luminous as normal field galaxies. Using H-alpha to estimate star formation they contribute at least an additional 5 per cent to the local star formation rate.Comment: To appear in "The Low Surface Brightness Universe", IAU Coll 171, eds.     Ultraviolet f→f emission and crystal field analysis for Er3+ in Cs2NaErCl6

    Luminescence is reported from the 2I11/2 level of Er3+, in the cubic elpasolite lattices Cs2NaErCl6 and Cs2NaYCl6. Altogether, with the use of ultraviolet laser excitation, 11 transitions from 2I11/2 Γ7 (at 40 668 cm-1) to lower term multiplets have been observed and assigned. Transitions are also reported from the 2K13/2 Γ6 level at 32 613 cm-1. The absence of emission from 2P3/2 (at 31 367 cm-1) under the experimental conditions is rationalized. Up-conversion to 2H(2)9/2, which is not due to two-photon absorption, is reported for Cs2NaErCl6 under blue pulsed laser excitation. Trap emission from 2G9/2 defect sites has been observed under ultraviolet excitation. A preliminary investigation has been made of the electronic absorption spectra of Cs2NaErCl6 and 58 Kramers quartet and doublet levels have been assigned, with a further 18 levels uncertain. The energy-level fit to 58 levels with total degeneracy 180 has been performed with a mean deviation of 20.4 cm-1, which is improved to 16.8 cm-1 if an empirical correction to the diagonal reduced matrix element of U4 for the 2H(2) term is included. The average error is similar for the 18 uncertain levels (total degeneracy 52). A comparison is included with the energy-level parametrizations of other Er3+ systems.published_or_final_versio

Insects, 7(3). doi:10.3390/insects7030044Research here explored the use of controlled atmospheres (CA) for managing arthropod pests that infest dry-cured hams. Experiments were conducted with low oxygen (O2) achieved with low pressure under a vacuum, high carbon dioxide (CO2), and ozone (O3). Results showed that both low O2 and high CO2 levels required exposures up to 144 h to kill 100% of all stages of red-legged ham beetle, Necrobia rufipes (De Geer) (Coleoptera: Cleridae) and ham mite Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Schrank) (Sarcoptiformes: Acaridae) at 23 °C. In addition, both low O2 and high CO2 had no significant mortality against the ham beetle and ham mites at short exposures ranging from 12 to 48 h. Ham beetles were more tolerant than ham mites to an atmosphere of 75.1% CO2 and low pressure of 25 mm Hg, which imposed an atmosphere estimated at 0.9% O2. Both low O2 and high CO2 trials indicated that the egg stages of both species were more tolerant than other stages tested, but N. rufipes eggs and pupae were more susceptible than larvae and adults to high concentration ozone treatments. The results indicate that O3 has potential to control ham beetles and ham mites, particularly at ≈166 ppm in just a 24 h exposure period, but O3 is known from other work to have poor penetration ability, thus it may be more difficult to apply effectively than low O2 or high CO2. would be.     4f-5d transitions of Pr3+ in elpasolite lattices

    The 4f5d→4f2 emission spectra of Cs2MPrCl6 (M = Na,Li) and CS2NaYCl6:Pr3+ have been recorded at temperatures down to 10 K. The spectra of Pr3+ in the cubic host Cs2NaYCl6 are the most clearly resolved, and 15 transitions to terminal crystal field levels of symmetry representations Γ5g and Γ4g have been observed and assigned, thereby inferring that the symmetry representation of the lowest 4f5d crystal field level is Γ3u. Each transition is characterized by strong progressions in two totally symmetric vibrational modes. The relative displacement of the potential energy curves for the 4f2 and 4f5d crystal field levels, along the α1g internal mode coordinate, is small, being only about 5 pm. The 10-K ultraviolet absorption spectra of CS2NaYCl6:Pr3+ are assigned to transitions from the [3H4] Γ1g electronic ground state to terminal Γ4u crystal field levels of 4f5d. Nontotally symmetric gerade vibrational modes only provide minor intensity contributions. The large energy gap between the d-f emission and f-d absorption spectra of Pr3+ in the cubic elpasolite host is rationalized. The 8-K excitation spectra of Cs2NaPrCl6 and Cs2NaYCl6:Pr3+, excited by synchrotron radiation, show that the transitions to 4f5d fall into two groups. The energy levels and wave vectors of the (independent) 4f2 and 4f5d configurations of Pr3+ have been calculated using a model which includes spin-orbit coupling and crystal field and Coulomb interactions, as well as the configuration interaction of 4f2 with 4f6p. Using the eigenvector of the predominantly high-spin, lowest excited crystal field level of 4f5d, the emission intensities are reasonably well simulated. However, the refinement of the 4f2→4f5d absorption intensities requires a more detailed knowledge of the crystal field energy level scheme of 4f5d.     Mice lacking NF-κB1 exhibit marked DNA damage responses and more severe gastric pathology in response to intraperitoneal tamoxifen administration

    Tamoxifen (TAM) has recently been shown to cause acute gastric atrophy and metaplasia in mice. We have previously demonstrated that the outcome of Helicobacter felis infection, which induces similar gastric lesions in mice, is altered by deletion of specific NF-κB subunits. Nfkb1-/- mice developed more severe gastric atrophy than wild-type (WT) mice 6 weeks after H. felis infection. In contrast, Nfkb2-/- mice were protected from this pathology. We therefore hypothesized that gastric lesions induced by TAM may be similarly regulated by signaling via NF-κB subunits. Groups of five female C57BL/6 (WT), Nfkb1-/-, Nfkb2-/- and c-Rel-/- mice were administered 150 mg/kg TAM by IP injection. Seventy-two hours later, gastric corpus tissues were taken for quantitative histological assessment. In addition, groups of six female WT and Nfkb1-/- mice were exposed to 12 Gy γ-irradiation. Gastric epithelial apoptosis was quantified 6 and 48 h after irradiation. TAM induced gastric epithelial lesions in all strains of mice, but this was more severe in Nfkb1-/- mice than in WT mice. Nfkb1-/- mice exhibited more severe parietal cell loss than WT mice, had increased gastric epithelial expression of Ki67 and had an exaggerated gastric epithelial DNA damage response as quantified by γH2AX. To investigate whether the difference in gastric epithelial DNA damage response of Nfkb1-/- mice was unique to TAM-induced DNA damage or a generic consequence of DNA damage, we also assessed gastric epithelial apoptosis following γ-irradiation. Six hours after γ-irradiation, gastric epithelial apoptosis was increased in the gastric corpus and antrum of Nfkb1-/- mice. NF-κB1-mediated signaling regulates the development of gastric mucosal pathology following TAM administration. This is associated with an exaggerated gastric epithelial DNA damage response. This aberrant response appears to reflect a more generic sensitization of the gastric mucosa of Nfkb1-/- mice to DNA damage
