    1. Significance/Context and Importance of the Study: Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (INPH) was first defined by Hakim and colleagues in 19651, and its symptoms later classified by the clinical triad of gait dysfunction, urinary incontinence, and dementia. The exact pathophysiology of this disease is not well understood.2 Surgical options for the treatment of INPH are ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) placement (most commonly with a programmable valve), and endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV). VPS is by far the most common method used to treat INPH worldwide. Debate exists as to the superiority between the two management options. Historically, VPS placement with a programmable valve has led to improved outcomes with INPH.3 More recent use of ETV has been reported in the form of retrospective data, demonstrating neurological improvement in up to 69% of patients.4 However, a cited limitation of this study is the less stringent diagnostic criteria that fails to discriminate secondary NPH from INPH. This is important because of the higher success rates of treatment in secondary NPH.2 This study by Pinto et al should be commended for its attempt to compare ETV to VPS with a nonprogrammable valve for patients with the diagnosis of INPH prospectively. Given that the natural history of VPS carries a significant rate of shunt revision, there have been no prior attempts to provide level I evidence demonstrating equivalence or superiority of ETV to VPS placement

Perceived Risks and Enjoyment: Identifying Barriers and Motivations to Clothing Renting

The purpose of this study is to identify how perceived risks impact attitude and perceived enjoyment and further behavioral intention toward clothing rental. A convenience sampling strategy was utilized with an online survey. A consumer panel of the target population was purchased from an online research company. Data cleaning generated 452 usable samples out of 607 returned responses. Scales were developed to measure the variables. All items were measured utilizing a 5-point Likert scale 1= strongly disagree to 5= strongly agree. Structural equation modeling was applied to examine the direct and indirect relationships between perceived risks and clothing renting intentions. Evidence from the study indicates that consumer intentions to rent clothing is encouraged by their attitudes and perceived enjoyment; but impeded by the perceived financial, performance, and psychological risks. Further, the results highlight the mediating role perceived enjoyment has on the negative relationship between perceived risks and clothing renting intentions

Review of Concussion and Return-to-Play Guidelines in Sport

Concussion is a form of mild traumatic head injury (TBI) associated with a variety of neurologic signs and symptoms. While historically trivialized in its significance, significant progress has been made in the medical literature and lay understanding of concussion. Severe TBI, long the subject of extensive research, has come under increased scrutiny following experience with blast injuries during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Such experience, grievously earned, has brought significant public attention and funding to the study of head injury. However, for the civilian population, concussion continues to be the most common form of traumatic brain injury, and athletics continues to be the single largest cause of concussion. Concussion in sports has come under substantial scrutiny as a result of widely publicized injuries in major American sports, particularly football and hockey. Media coverage has increased further as understanding of the related yet distinct syndrome of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), formerly known as dementia pugilistica or punch-drunk syndrome , and its proposed mechanism of repeated sub-concussive trauma has increased. While media attention has focused primarily on concussion in professional athletes, the majority of sports-related concussions occur in youth participants.1 With relative unavailability of physicians trained in on-field assessment of concussed athletes relative to professional sports teams, youth athletes are at significant risk for short- and long-term neurologic injury from concussion. This manuscript aims to outline the natural history of sports concussion and review recent updates in on-field assessment and return-to-play guidelines

Viewing Sustainable Strategy of Fast and Slow Fashion Businesses Model through the Lens of Triple Bottom Line Theory

    Get PDF
This study was designed to gain better understanding how both slow and fast fashion businesses are addressing sustainability related issues. Secondary data was collected through comprehensive literature search. Data include, corporate sustainability report from USA and Europe based fast fashion companies, slow fashion business website information and journal articles. We examined sustainable strategies and implementation scheme of both business models along the design, production, distribution, and consumption value chain using the lens of Triple Bottom Line theory that address economic, social and environmental dimension of sustainability. Results show that social and environmental sustainability strategy is mostly identical across both slow fashion and fast fashion business models. However, to be economically sustainable, they follow different strategies

A Difference Version of Nori's Theorem

We consider (Frobenius) difference equations over (F_q(s,t), phi) where phi fixes t and acts on F_q(s) as the Frobenius endomorphism. We prove that every semisimple, simply-connected linear algebraic group G defined over F_q can be realized as a difference Galois group over F_{q^i}(s,t) for some i in N. The proof uses upper and lower bounds on the Galois group scheme of a Frobenius difference equation that are developed in this paper. The result can be seen as a difference analogue of Nori's Theorem which states that G(F_q) occurs as (finite) Galois group over F_q(s).Comment: 29 page

Starch from the Sago (Metroxylon sagu) palm tree - properties, prospects, and challenges as a new industrial source for food and other uses.

    Get PDF
The common industrial starches are typically derived from cereals (corn, wheat, rice, sorghum), tubers (potato, sweet potato), roots (cassava), and legumes (mung bean, green pea). Sago (Metroxylon sagu Rottb.) starch is perhaps the only example of commercial starch derived from another source, the stem of palm (sago palm). Sago palm has the ability to thrive in the harsh swampy peat environment of certain areas. It is estimated that there are about 2 million ha of natural sago palm forests and about 0.14 million ha of planted sago palm at present, out of a total swamp area of about 20 million ha in Asia and the Pacific Region, most of which are under- or nonutilized. Growing in a suitable environment with organized farming practices, sago palm could have a yield potential of up to 25 tons of starch per hectare per year. Sago starch yield per unit area could be about 3 to 4 times higher than that of rice, corn, or wheat, and about 17 times higher than that of cassava. Compared to the common industrial starches, however, sago starch has been somewhat neglected and relatively less attention has been devoted to the sago palm and its starch. Nevertheless, a number of studies have been published covering various aspects of sago starch such as molecular structure, physicochemical and functional properties, chemical/physical modifications, and quality issues. This article is intended to piece together the accumulated knowledge and highlight some pertinent information related to sago palm and sago starch studies
