The Pulp and Paper Industry and Its Water Use: A Summary
This report describes the Pulp and Paper Industry. The production processes are summarized as is this industry's dependence upon enormous quantities of water. In as much as this report is intended to summarize a very complicated, multifaceted industry, a great deal of detail has been sacrificed for brevity and for a cleaner understanding of the industry taken as a whole.
The summary is in three major parts. The first concerns size and importance of the pulp and paper industry, and includes basic statistics on pulp and paper manufacture for the world, the United states and selected other countries. Second an overview of the production processes involved in the manufacture of pulp and paper, this includes the various inputs and outputs associated with this industry. The third part of the report concerns itself with one of the major outputs of this industrial process: pollution
Elastic p-3He and n-3H scattering with two- and three-body forces
We report on a microscopic calculation of n-3H and p-3He scattering employing
the Argonne v_{18} and v_8' nucleon-nucleon potentials with and without
additional three-nucleon force. An R-matrix analysis of the p-3He and n-3H
scattering data is presented. Comparisons are made for the phase shifts and a
selection of measurements in both scattering systems. Differences between our
calculation and the R-matrix results or the experimental data can be attributed
to only two partial waves (3P0 and 3P2). We find the effect of the Urbana IX
and the Texas-Los Alamos three-nucleon forces on the phase shifts to be

Exact asymptotics for the stationary distribution of a Markov chain: A production model
We derive rough and exact asymptotic expressions for the station- ary distribution π of a Markov chain arising in a queueing/production context. The approach we develop can also handle "cascades", which are situations where the uid limit of the large deviation path from the origin to the increasingly rare event is nonlinear. Our approach considers a process that starts at the rare event. In our production ex- ample, we can have two sequences of states that asymptotically lie on the same line, yet π has different asymptotics on the two sequences
Scalar Dark Matter From Theory Space
The scalar dark matter candidate in a prototypical theory space little Higgs
model is investigated. We review all details of the model pertinent to dark
matter. We perform a thermal relic density calculation including couplings to
the gauge and Higgs sectors of the model. We find two regions of parameter
space that give acceptable dark matter abundances. The first region has a dark
matter candidate with a mass of order 100 GeV, the second region has a heavy
candidate with a mass greater than about 500 GeV$. The dark matter candidate in
either region is an admixture of an SU(2) triplet and an SU(2) singlet, thereby
constituting a WIMP (weakly interacting massive particle).Comment: 18 pages, 2 figures, version to appear in PR
Morphology and foliar chemistry of containerized Abies fraseri (Pursh) Poir. seedlings as affected by water availability and nutrition
• We present the results of a two-year (2007–2008) greenhouse study investigating the
effect of water availability and nitrogen fertilization on the growth, biomass
partitioning, and foliar nutrient content of Abies fraseri (Pursh)
Poir.
• Fertilizer and moisture content (irrigation) were varied in a factorial experiment
combining four levels of irrigation and three levels of fertilization to evaluate growth
and foliar nutrient content. In addition, a numerical optimization was used to estimate
appropriate levels of each factor necessary to achieve simulated goals for response
variables.
• Irrigation increased the height growth by 12 to 35% depending on the fertilization
treatment (p = 0.0001). Fertilization increased height growth by 10 to
26% (p = 0.02). A similar response was observed for stem diameter growth
(SDG). Total biomass accumulation increased as result of positive response of stem and
root biomass development, and foliar nitrogen content was positively affected by nitrogen
fertilization and negatively affected by irrigation. The numerical optimization for
simulated target growth and nitrogen content responses produced levels of input
combinations with high desirability factors to achieve the target responses.
• These results suggest that nutrient addition is a strong determining factor for early
development of this species. The improved growth efficiency in this study is likely
attributed to a combination of factors including, improved photosynthetic capacity,
decreased stomatal limitations, or increased resource allocation to stems
Energy calibration of the NEXT-White detector with 1% resolution near Q ββ of 136Xe
Excellent energy resolution is one of the primary advantages of electroluminescent high-pressure xenon TPCs. These detectors are promising tools in searching for rare physics events, such as neutrinoless double-beta decay (ββ0ν), which require precise energy measurements. Using the NEXT-White detector, developed by the NEXT (Neutrino Experiment with a Xenon TPC) collaboration, we show for the first time that an energy resolution of 1% FWHM can be achieved at 2.6 MeV, establishing the present technology as the one with the best energy resolution of all xenon detectors for ββ0ν searches. A measurement of the tau mass and the first CPT test with tau leptons
We measure the mass of the tau lepton to be 1775.1+-1.6(stat)+-1.0(syst.) MeV
using tau pairs from Z0 decays. To test CPT invariance we compare the masses of
the positively and negatively charged tau leptons. The relative mass difference
is found to be smaller than 3.0 10^-3 at the 90% confidence level.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, Submitted to Phys. Letts.
Search for R-Parity Violating Decays of Scalar Fermions at LEP
A search for pair-produced scalar fermions under the assumption that R-parity
is not conserved has been performed using data collected with the OPAL detector
at LEP. The data samples analysed correspond to an integrated luminosity of
about 610 pb-1 collected at centre-of-mass energies of sqrt(s) 189-209 GeV. An
important consequence of R-parity violation is that the lightest supersymmetric
particle is expected to be unstable. Searches of R-parity violating decays of
charged sleptons, sneutrinos and squarks have been performed under the
assumptions that the lightest supersymmetric particle decays promptly and that
only one of the R-parity violating couplings is dominant for each of the decay
modes considered. Such processes would yield final states consisting of
leptons, jets, or both with or without missing energy. No significant
single-like excess of events has been observed with respect to the Standard
Model expectations. Limits on the production cross- section of scalar fermions
in R-parity violating scenarios are obtained. Constraints on the supersymmetric
particle masses are also presented in an R-parity violating framework analogous

Predictors of care-giver stress in families of preschool-aged children with developmental disabilities
Background This study examined the predictors, mediators and moderators of parent stress in families of preschool-aged children with developmental disability. Method One hundred and five mothers of preschool-aged children with developmental disability completed assessment measures addressing the key variables. Results Analyses demonstrated that the difficulty parents experienced in completing specific caregiving tasks, behaviour problems during these caregiving tasks, and level of child disability, respectively, were significant predictors of level of parent stress. In addition, parents’ cognitive appraisal of care-giving responsibilities had a mediating effect on the relationship between the child’s level of disability and parent stress. Mothers’ level of social support had a moderating effect on the relationship between key independent variables and level of parent stress. Conclusions Difficulty of care-giving tasks, difficult child behaviour during care-giving tasks, and level of child disability are the primary factors which contribute to parent stress. Implications of these findings for future research and clinical practice are outlined
