    This report describes the Pulp and Paper Industry. The production processes are summarized as is this industry's dependence upon enormous quantities of water. In as much as this report is intended to summarize a very complicated, multifaceted industry, a great deal of detail has been sacrificed for brevity and for a cleaner understanding of the industry taken as a whole. The summary is in three major parts. The first concerns size and importance of the pulp and paper industry, and includes basic statistics on pulp and paper manufacture for the world, the United states and selected other countries. Second an overview of the production processes involved in the manufacture of pulp and paper, this includes the various inputs and outputs associated with this industry. The third part of the report concerns itself with one of the major outputs of this industrial process: pollution

    We derive rough and exact asymptotic expressions for the station- ary distribution π of a Markov chain arising in a queueing/production context. The approach we develop can also handle "cascades", which are situations where the uid limit of the large deviation path from the origin to the increasingly rare event is nonlinear. Our approach considers a process that starts at the rare event. In our production ex- ample, we can have two sequences of states that asymptotically lie on the same line, yet π has different asymptotics on the two sequences

    Interest in water resources systems has been a critical part of resources and environment related research at IIASA since its inception. As countries undertake more and larger projects to meet their water use, the physical limitations of natural water supplies are becoming apparent. This in turn requires an increase in the degree of detail and sophistication of the analysis, including economic, social, and environmental evaluation of development alternatives aided by application of mathematical modelling techniques, to generate input for planning, design, and operational decisions. In the years 1976 and 1977 IIASA initiated a concentrated research effort focusing on modelling and forecasting of water demands. Our interest in this topic derives from the generally accepted realization that these fundamental aspects of water resources management have not been given due consideration in the past. This report, the seventh in the IIASA water demand series, consists of a selected annotated bibliography on water demand literature which came about as a result of IIASA's study on water demands

    Yield and photosynthetic rate of wheat under continuously high temperature

    In tropical regions high temperature occurs throughout wheat growth cycle and is a major factor influencing growth and yield in this area. The aim of this work is to describe the responses to continuously-high temperatures on growth, photosynthesis and yield of wheat, under controlled conditions. Nias and Dewata (Indonesian wheat varieties) and Axe and Gladius (Australian varieties) were tested in growth room experiment with temperature and photoperiod chosen to simulate conditions on Lombok Island, at lowland (32/23°C) and highland (28/20°C) sites. The third temperature (25/15°C) was selected to represent temperature in a more temperate wheat-producing area. High temperature reduced yield and dry matter accumulation which was associated with a reduction in photosynthetic rate and stomata conductance and an increase in respiration rate. The reduction in photosynthetic rate at high temperature was not only due to lower stomatal conductance but also non-stomatal effects as mesophyll conductance and quantum yield were lower. Genetic variability in response to heat stress was evident with the Indonesian varieties being more tolerant to high temperatures than Australian varieties. Nias and Dewata produced higher yield and biomass and maintaining higher rates of photosynthesis.     High temperatures are a common feature of the environment of tropical regions such as Lombok Island and although the effect can be alleviated by altitude, heat stress will be an important limitation to the productivity of wheat in this environment. The objectives of the experiment were to observe the responses of water use (WU), water use efficiency (WUE) and water soluble carbohydrate (WSC) to high temperatures on growth and yield of wheat under controlled conditions. In this experiment plants were grown under growth chambers at temperatures to simulate low and high elevation locations on Lombok Island. Water use, water use efficiency, WSC and yield of 4 wheat genotypes (2 Australian and 2 Indonesian varieties) grown at 3 temperatures (32°/23°C, 28°/20ºC, and 25°/15ºC day/night) were compared. Variation in water use, water use efficiency, and the concentration of water soluble carbohydrate was found. Indonesian wheat varieties, Nias and Dewata produced higher yield and biomass and maintaining higher rates of water use and remobilisation of water soluble carbohydrate from vegetative tissues to grain. The accumulation of water soluble carbohydrates was an important adaptive characteristic that was strongly associated with grain weight and grains per spikelet and maintained better yield.A Zubaidi, D R Anugrahwati, G Gill and G K McDonal

    Elastic p-3He and n-3H scattering with two- and three-body forces

    We report on a microscopic calculation of n-3H and p-3He scattering employing the Argonne v_{18} and v_8' nucleon-nucleon potentials with and without additional three-nucleon force. An R-matrix analysis of the p-3He and n-3H scattering data is presented. Comparisons are made for the phase shifts and a selection of measurements in both scattering systems. Differences between our calculation and the R-matrix results or the experimental data can be attributed to only two partial waves (3P0 and 3P2). We find the effect of the Urbana IX and the Texas-Los Alamos three-nucleon forces on the phase shifts to be negligible.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev.

High-spin states at excitation energies Ex=309 and 646 keV are found to be much more strongly populated than the JÏ€=((3/2-(7/2)+ states relevant to neutrino capture by I127

    Scalar Dark Matter From Theory Space

    The scalar dark matter candidate in a prototypical theory space little Higgs model is investigated. We review all details of the model pertinent to dark matter. We perform a thermal relic density calculation including couplings to the gauge and Higgs sectors of the model. We find two regions of parameter space that give acceptable dark matter abundances. The first region has a dark matter candidate with a mass of order 100 GeV, the second region has a heavy candidate with a mass greater than about 500 GeV$. The dark matter candidate in either region is an admixture of an SU(2) triplet and an SU(2) singlet, thereby constituting a WIMP (weakly interacting massive particle).Comment: 18 pages, 2 figures, version to appear in PR

    Variable Ticket Pricing in Major League Baseball

    Sport teams historically have been reluctant to change ticket prices during the season. Recently, however, numerous sport organizations have implemented variable ticket pricing in an effort to maximize revenues. In Major League Baseball variable pricing results in ticket price increases or decreases depending on factors such as quality of the opponent, day of the week, month of the year, and for special events such as opening day, Memorial Day, and Independence Day. Using censored regression and elasticity analysis, this article demonstrates that variable pricing would have yielded approximately 590,000peryearinadditionalticketrevenueforeachmajorleagueteamin1996,ceterisparibus.Accountingforcapacityconstraints,thisamountstoonlyabouta2.8590,000 per year in additional ticket revenue for each major league team in 1996, ceteris paribus. Accounting for capacity constraints, this amounts to only about a 2.8% increase above what occurs when prices are not varied. For the 1996 season, the largest revenue gain would have been the Cleveland Indians, who would have generated an extra 1.4 million in revenue. The largest percentage revenue gain would have been the San Francisco Giants. The Giants would have seen an estimated 6.7% increase in revenue had they used optimal variable pricing
