Infinite barbarians
This paper discusses an infinite regress that looms behind a certain kind of historical explanation. The movement of one barbarian group is often explained by the movement of others, but those movements in turn call for an explanation. While their explanation can again be the movement of yet another group of barbarians, if this sort of explanation does not stop somewhere we are left with an infinite regress of barbarians. While that regress would be vicious, it cannot be accommodated by several general views about what viciousness in infinite regresses amounts to. This example is additional evidence that we should prefer a pluralist approach to infinite regresses
L'organisation biogéologique du lac Temsah (Ismaïlia, Egypte)
Le lac Temsah, situé sur le canal de Suez, à mi-distance entre Port Saïd et Suez, est étudié quant à son organisation hydrologique, hydrochimique, biologique et sédimentologique. Dans sa partie axiale, le bassin est alimenté par de l'eau de mer grâce au canal de Suez. Il est par ailleurs soumis à une influence continentale complexe et originale avec interférence d'un climat aride et d'apports d'eau douce en provenance du Nil. L'organisation hydrologique et hydrochimique du lac dépend de facteurs saisonniers qui gèrent notamment le débit du Nil et la circulation des eaux dans le canal de Suez. Malgré ce dispositif original, l'organisation biologique est semblable à celle des lagunes méditerranéennes; la partie centrale du bassin, modérément confinée, abrite des populations dominées par les mollusques. La région directement influencée par les apports nilotiques présente une forte biomasse phytoplanctoniques et des peuplements benthiques typiquement paraliques. La zone de contact entre les eaux du Nil en crue et celles du bassin est marquée par un fort engraissement organique des sédiments qui se traduit par la diminution des filtreurs au profit des détrivore
Dark Matter detection via lepton cosmic rays
Recent observations of lepton cosmic rays, coming from the PAMELA and FERMI
experiments, have pushed our understanding of the interstellar medium and
cosmic rays sources to unprecedented levels. The imprint of dark matter on
lepton cosmic rays is the most exciting explanation of both PAMELA's positron
excess and FERMI's total flux of electrons. Alternatively, supernovae are
astrophysical objects with the same potential to explain these observations. In
this work, we present an updated study of the astrophysical sources of lepton
cosmic rays and the possible trace of a dark matter signal on the positron

Diversification into novel habitats in the Africa clade of Dioscorea (Dioscoreaceae): erect habit and elephant's foot tubers
Background: Dioscorea is a widely distributed and highly diversified genus in tropical regions where it is represented by ten main clades, one of which diversified exclusively in Africa. In southern Africa it is characterised by a distinct group of species with a pachycaul or "elephant''s foot" structure that is partially to fully exposed above the substrate. In contrast to African representatives of the genus from other clades, occurring mainly in forest or woodland, the pachycaul taxa and their southern African relatives occur in diverse habitats ranging from woodland to open vegetation. Here we investigate patterns of diversification in the African clade, time of transition from forest to more open habitat, and morphological traits associated with each habitat and evaluate if such transitions have led to modification of reproductive organs and mode of dispersal. Results: The Africa clade originated in the Oligocene and comprises four subclades. The Dioscorea buchananii subclade (southeastern tropical Africa and South Africa) is sister to the East African subclade, which is respectively sister to the recently evolved sister South African (e. g., Cape and Pachycaul) subclades. The Cape and Pachycaul subclades diversified in the east of the Cape Peninsula in the mid Miocene, in an area with complex geomorphology and climate, where the fynbos, thicket, succulent karoo and forest biomes meet. Conclusions: Diversification out of forest is associated with major shifts in morphology of the perennial tuber (specifically an increase in size and orientation which presumably led them to become pachycaul) and rotation of stem (from twining to non-twining). The iconic elephant''s foot morphology, observed in grasslands and thicket biomes, where its corky bark may offer protection against fire and herbivory, evolved since mid Miocene. A shift in pollination trait is observed within the forest, but entry into open habitat does not show association with reproductive morphology, except in the seed wing, which has switched from winged all round the seed margin to just at the base or at the apex of it, or has been even replaced by an elaiosome
Comparison of absolute gain photometric calibration between Planck/HFI and Herschel/SPIRE at 545 and 857 GHz
We compare the absolute gain photometric calibration of the Planck/HFI and
Herschel/SPIRE instruments on diffuse emission. The absolute calibration of HFI
and SPIRE each relies on planet flux measurements and comparison with
theoretical far-infrared emission models of planetary atmospheres. We measure
the photometric cross calibration between the instruments at two overlapping
bands, 545 GHz / 500 m and 857 GHz / 350 m. The SPIRE maps used have
been processed in the Herschel Interactive Processing Environment (Version 12)
and the HFI data are from the 2015 Public Data Release 2. For our study we used
15 large fields observed with SPIRE, which cover a total of about 120 deg^2. We
have selected these fields carefully to provide high signal-to-noise ratio,
avoid residual systematics in the SPIRE maps, and span a wide range of surface
brightness. The HFI maps are bandpass-corrected to match the emission observed
by the SPIRE bandpasses. The SPIRE maps are convolved to match the HFI beam and
put on a common pixel grid. We measure the cross-calibration relative gain
between the instruments using two methods in each field, pixel-to-pixel
correlation and angular power spectrum measurements. The SPIRE / HFI relative
gains are 1.047 ( 0.0069) and 1.003 ( 0.0080) at 545 and 857 GHz,
respectively, indicating very good agreement between the instruments. These
relative gains deviate from unity by much less than the uncertainty of the
absolute extended emission calibration, which is about 6.4% and 9.5% for HFI
and SPIRE, respectively, but the deviations are comparable to the values 1.4%
and 5.5% for HFI and SPIRE if the uncertainty from models of the common
calibrator can be discounted. Of the 5.5% uncertainty for SPIRE, 4% arises from
the uncertainty of the effective beam solid angle, which impacts the adopted

Two subgenera of Combretum Loefl. occur in the Flora of southern Africa (FSA) region. Previous sectional classifications
were assessed in view of molecular evidence and accordingly modified. Ten sections in subgen. Combretum, 25 species
and eight subspecies are recognized. Subgen. Cacoucia (Aub!.) Exell & Stace comprises four sections and seven species. C.
engleri Schinz, C. paniculatum Vent. and C. tenuipes Eng!. & Diels are reinstated as distinct species separate from C. schumannii
Eng!., C. microphyllum Klotzsch and C. padoides Eng!. & Diels, respectively. C. schumannii occurs outside the FSA

Cosmic rays from Leptonic Dark Matter
If dark matter possesses a lepton number, it is natural to expect the
dark-matter annihilation and/or decay mainly produces the standard model
leptons, while negligible amount of the antiproton is produced. To illustrate
such a simple idea, we consider a scenario that a right-handed sneutrino dark
matter decays into the standard model particles through tiny R-parity violating
interactions. Interestingly enough, charged leptons as well as neutrinos are
directly produced, and they can lead to a sharp peak in the predicted positron
fraction. Moreover, the decay of the right-handed sneutrino also generates
diffuse continuum gamma rays which may account for the excess observed by
EGRET, while the primary antiproton flux can be suppressed. Those predictions
on the cosmic-ray fluxes of the positrons, gamma rays and antiprotons will be

Cosmic-ray antiproton constraints on light dark matter candidates
Some direct detection experiments have recently collected excess events that
could be interpreted as a dark matter (DM) signal, pointing to particles in the
10 GeV mass range. We show that scenarios in which DM can self-annihilate
with significant couplings to quarks are likely excluded by the cosmic-ray (CR)
antiproton data, provided the annihilation is S-wave dominated when DM
decouples in the early universe. These limits apply to most of supersymmetric
candidates, eg in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) and in the
next-to-MSSM (NMSSM), and more generally to any thermal DM particle with

Exploring the van der Waals Atom-Surface attraction in the nanometric range
The van der Waals atom-surface attraction, scaling as C3 z-3 for z the
atom-surface distance, is expected to be valid in the distance range 1-1000 nm,
covering 8-10 orders of magnitudes in the interaction energy. A Cs vapour
nanocell allows us to analyze the spectroscopic modifications induced by the
atom-surface attraction on the 6P3/2->6D5/2 transition. The measured C3 value
is found to be independent of the thickness in the explored range 40-130 nm,
and is in agreement with an elementary theoretical prediction. We also discuss
the specific interest of exploring short distances and large interaction

Rigged Hilbert Space Approach to the Schrodinger Equation
It is shown that the natural framework for the solutions of any Schrodinger
equation whose spectrum has a continuous part is the Rigged Hilbert Space
rather than just the Hilbert space. The difficulties of using only the Hilbert
space to handle unbounded Schrodinger Hamiltonians whose spectrum has a
continuous part are disclosed. Those difficulties are overcome by using an
appropriate Rigged Hilbert Space (RHS). The RHS is able to associate an
eigenket to each energy in the spectrum of the Hamiltonian, regardless of
whether the energy belongs to the discrete or to the continuous part of the
spectrum. The collection of eigenkets corresponding to both discrete and
continuous spectra forms a basis system that can be used to expand any physical
wave function. Thus the RHS treats discrete energies (discrete spectrum) and
scattering energies (continuous spectrum) on the same footing.Comment: 27 RevTex page
