    Involvement of cocaine-amphetamine regulated transcript in the differential feeding responses to nociceptin/orphanin FQ in dark agouti and Wistar Ottawa Karlsburg W rats

    Wistar Ottawa Karlsburg W (WOKW) rats and their controls, dark agouti (DA), present different features: in particular, DA rats are lean, while the WOKW are obese and present symptoms of hypertension, dyslipidemia, hyperinsulinemia, and impaired glucose tolerance. The present study tested the hypothesis that these two strains would demonstrate different sensitivity to nociceptin/orphanin FQ (N/OFQ). N/OFQ was injected into the lateral brain ventricle (LBV) of sated DA and WOKW rats, and corticosterone levels in both strains were measured after LBV injection of N/OFQ. LBV N/OFQ injections dose-dependently produced a significant increase in food intake (4 h) in DA rats, but not in WOKW. However, corticosterone levels were increased by N/OFQ to a greater degree in WOKW than in DA rats. Gene sequencing and gene expression of ORL1 receptor and cocaine-amphetamine regulated transcript (Cart) peptide were evaluated to study the difference in N/OFQ-induced feeding behavior in the two strains. WOKW rats had a different amino acid sequence of Cart peptide and a significantly higher expression of Cart in the hypothalamus. The present data show that DA and WOKW rats demonstrate different sensitivity to N/OFQ, and suggest that Cart peptide might be the underlying mechanism of this difference

    Sustainability Analysis of Hydrogen Production Processes: a Comparison Based on Sustainability Indicators

    Hydrogen is a versatile energy carrier and storage medium that may be employed in a variety of applications. It may be produced using different processes. In this work, process simulation is used to obtain material and energy balances for each process investigated, as well as for the evaluation of capital and maintenance costs. Process simulation outcomes are then used to estimate three key performance indicators focusing on sustainability issues: the energy return of energy invested, the levelized cost of hydrogen and the life cycle assessment. We compared several hydrogen generation processes, each denoted by a unique colour code: (i) green hydrogen, produced by electrolysis of water using electricity from renewable sources, (ii) grid hydrogen, produced by electrolysis using grid electricity, (iii) grey hydrogen, produced from natural gas using steam reforming and (iv) blue hydrogen, like grey one, but coupled with carbon capture and storage. In conclusion, the most sustainable hydrogen production method is the green hydrogen, produced by water electrolysis

    Aim: Adipose tissue has been the object of intense research in the field of obesity and diabetes diseases in the last decade. Examination of adipocyte-secreted peptides led to the identification of a unique polypeptide, resistin (RSTN), which has been suggested as a link between obesity and diabetes. RSTN plays a clearly documented role in blocking insulin (INS)-induced hypoglycaemia. As brain injection of INS affects feeding behaviour, we studied the possible interaction between INS and RSTN in food-deprived rats, measuring effects on food intake. In addition, we examined how RSTN might affect neuropeptide Y (NPY)-induced feeding, as studies have shown that rat RSTN can interfere with the NPY system. Methods: Overnight food-deprived rats were injected into the third brain ventricle (3V) with either INS (10 or 20 mUI), RSTN (0.1–0.4 nmol/rat), or saline before access to food. Another group of rats was injected into the 3V with RSTN alone, NPY alone or RSTN plus NPY. Their food intake and body weight were measured. Results: Our results confirm the hypophagic effect of RSTN on food deprivation-induced food intake, and more importantly, show that RSTN neither potentiates nor blocks the effects of INS on food intake, but does reduce the hyperphagic effect of NPY. Conclusion:  The observation that RSTN does not modify feeding INS-induced hypophagia, but does influence NPY-induced feeding, points to the possibility that RSTN may be involved in control of food intake through an NPY-ergic mechanism as INS

    Hypothalamic CRF1 receptor mechanisms are not sufficient to account for binge‐like palatable food consumption in female rats

    OBJECTIVE: The present study evaluated the effect of systemic injection of the CRF1 receptor antagonist R121919, the corticosterone synthesis inhibitor metyrapone and central amygdala (CeA) injections of the nonselective CRF antagonist D-Phe-CRF(12-41) in rats in which binge eating was evoked by stress and cycles of food restriction. METHOD: Female rats were subjected or not to repeated cycles of regular chow food restriction/ad libitum feeding during which they were also given limited access (2 h) to palatable food. On the test day, rats were either exposed or not to the sight of the palatable food for 15 min without allowing access, before assessing food consumption. RESULTS: Systemic injections of R121919, but not of the metyrapone, blocked binge-like eating behavior. Restricted and stressed rats showed up-regulation of crh1 receptor mRNA signal in the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis and CeA but not in basolateral amygdala (BLA) or in the paraventricular nucleus. Injection D-Phe-CRF(12-41) in CeA but not in the BLA-blocked binge-like eating behavior. DISCUSSION: These findings demonstrate that extra-hypothalamic CRF1 receptors, rather than those involved in endocrine functions, are involved in binge eating and the crucial role of CRF receptors in CeA. CRF1 receptor antagonism may represent a novel pharmacological treatment for binge-related eating disorders

    Modification of the electrical and optical Properties of Single Crystal Diamond with Focused MeV Ion Beams

    AbstractIn this paper an overview is given on recent results obtained in the framework of an Italian/Croatian collaboration aimed to explore the potential of techniques based on focused MeV ion beams to locally modify the structural, electrical and optical features of diamond.Experiments were carried out using light (H, He, C) ion beams with energies of the order of MeV, focused to micrometer-size spot and raster scanned onto the surface of monocrystalline (IIa or Ib) diamond samples. Different energies, ion species and fluences were used, in conjunction with variable thickness masks and post annealing processes, to define three-dimensional structures in diamond, whose electrical/optical/structural properties have been suitably characterized. Finite element numerical methods have been employed in the modeling of the material modification and in device design

    Il campionamento biologico delle catture/sbarcati commerciali, sezione C – Relative al mestiere ed E – Relative agli stock (Campbiol), nell’ambito del Programma Nazionale per la Raccolta Dati Alieutici (PNRDA) (Reg. Ce. N°199/2008; N°665/2008 e decisione della commissione N°949/2008) risulta di grande importanza per conoscere come agisce il prelievo dei diversi ”metiers” sulle diverse specie, in termini di variazioni dell’abbondanza e struttura demografica delle risorse da pesca. Il campionamento biologico risponde, quindi, principalmente alle seguenti esigenze: 1. Ricostruire la struttura demografica delle catture commerciali/sbarchi di ogni specie (in taglia/età), considerando tutti i ”métiers” che incidono significativamente sull’ammontare globale delle catture. 2. Ricostruire il pattern di sfruttamento dei diversi ”métiers” per le diverse specie. 3. Consentire lo studio dei fenomeni biologici rilevanti, quali la crescita ed il ciclo sessuale, che variano nel corso dell’anno. 4. Acquisire informazioni sulla struttura demografica con specifico riferimento allo stadio di maturazione gonadica (maturità/taglia-età) ed alla relazione fra lunghezza e peso corporeo (taglia-peso/età).     Sequential Coupling of The Transesterification of Cyclic Carbonates with The Selective N-Methylation of Anilines Catalysed by Faujasites

    Anilines (R¢C6H4NH2: R¢ = H, p-MeO, p-Me; p-Cl, and p-NO2) react with a mixture of ethylene carbonate and methanol at 180 ◦C in the presence of alkali metal exchanged faujasites—preferably of the X-type—to give the corresponding N,N-dimethyl derivatives (R¢C6H4NMe2) in isolated yields up to 98%. Evidence proves that methanol is not the methylating agent. The reaction instead takes place through two sequential transformations, both catalyzed by faujasites: first transesterification of ethylene carbonate with MeOH to yield dimethyl carbonate, followed by the selective N-methylation of anilines by dimethyl carbonate. Propylene carbonate, is less reactive than ethylene carbonate, but it can be used under the same conditions. The overall process is highly chemoselective since the competitive reactions between the anilines and the cyclic carbonates is efficiently ruled out. Ethanol and propanol form the corresponding diethyl- and dipropyl- carbonates in the first step, but these compounds are not successful for the domino alkylation of anilines
