    Syntactic discontinuous reduplication with antonymic pairs: A case study from Italian

    open2noThis article aims at giving a comprehensive account of a so far undescribed reduplicative pattern in Italian named syntactic discontinuous reduplication with antonymic pairs (SDRA). This pattern, characterized by the non-contiguous repetition of the same element within a larger fixed configuration defined by two spatial antonyms, can be schematized as , where Adv1 and Adv2 are antonyms (e.g., di qua 'here' ∼di là 'there'). After describing its formal and functional properties, based on naturally occurring data extracted from the Italian Web 2016 corpus, the SDRA is analyzed as an independent 'construction' in the Construction Grammar sense. This construction is claimed to convey a general value of 'plurality' and to have developed a polysemy network of daughter constructions expressing more specific functions such as 'distributivity,' 'related variety,' and 'dispersion.' In addition, we propose considering the SDRA a 'multiple source construction,' originating from the blending of two independent constructions: syntactic reduplication and irreversible binomials with antonymic adverbs. Finally, we discuss SDRA-like patterns in other typologically different languages (Russian, Modern Hebrew, Mandarin Chinese, German), pointing out similarities and differences, and paving the way to a more systematic study of discontinuous reduplication in a crosslinguistic perspective.openMasini F.; Mattiola S.Masini F.; Mattiola S

    Performance Limits of Spatially Distributed Molecular Communications With Receiver Saturation

    Molecular via diffusion are affected by unreliability and inter symbol interference in case of single transmitter. A promising solution to these issues appears to be the adoption of a swarm of randomly distributed transmitting nano-devices and a single spherical receiver. However, such a perspective assumes the receiver as fully absorbing (i.e., able to absorb an unlimited number of molecules per second). In this letter, we show that, if this assumption is relaxed, increasing the number of point transmitters leads to a saturation effect which makes communication impossible when digital transmission is considered. By means of a first and second order spatio-temporal stochastic model, we analytically derive the maximum allowed point transmitters density before saturation arises, as a function of parameters such as the diffusion coefficient, the maximum number of absorbed molecules, and the number of previously transmitted symbols.     Damage scenario of the earthquake on 23 July 1930 in Melfi: the contribution of technical documentation

    As regards the 1930 Irpinia earthquake a detailed research both on the institutional response to the seismic event in Vulture area and reconstruction of the damage scenario for the town of Melfi has been performed. This study was carried out by an analysis of coeval dossiers drawn up by the Special Office of Civil Engineers, which was set up after the earthquake. The research brought to light the typologies and the modalities of the institutional actions taken during the post-seismic period. In general, these territorial interventions had a notable effect on urban systems, especially those involving both the partial shifting of urban areas and the construction of earthquake-proof buildings. The research also identified the damage pattern in Melfi by a deeper study on about 2400 archive files. A preliminary analysis of the damage pattern indicates probable seismic amplification phenomena due to the lithological and geomorphological features of the site. Moreover, the analysis of time-dependent activities of reconstruction has shown that almost all the buildings of the town (90%) were repaired or reconstructed within five years after the seismic disaster

    Regularized Estimation of High-Dimensional Vector AutoRegressions with Weakly Dependent Innovations

    There has been considerable advance in understanding the properties of sparse regularization procedures in high-dimensional models. In time series context, it is mostly restricted to Gaussian autoregressions or mixing sequences. We study oracle properties of LASSO estimation of weakly sparse vector-autoregressive models with heavy tailed, weakly dependent innovations with virtually no assumption on the conditional heteroskedasticity. In contrast to current literature, our innovation process satisfy an L1L^1 mixingale type condition on the centered conditional covariance matrices. This condition covers L1L^1-NED sequences and strong (α\alpha-) mixing sequences as particular examples
