Depositional Environment of the St. Mary River Formation in Western Montana
In May 2013, the Two Medicine Dinosaur Center (TMDC) began excavation on a dinosaur bonebed in the St. Mary River Formation on Carey Butte, Montana. Since excavation started, four additional bonebeds have been discovered in the surrounding area. They display different depositional environments; two are in sandstone and the other three are in siltstone. The purpose of this study is to provide a depositional setting for the area that links all five sites together comprehensively by examining the sedimentology of the area. A stratigraphic analysis of the St. Mary River Formation of Carey Butte revealed four distinct facies associations. Facies Association 1 is made up of large sandstone lenses, which are interpreted as a large river channel. Facies Association 2 is made up of small sandstone lenses, which are interpreted as splay channels. Facies Association 3 is a series of thin sandstone and siltstone sheets, which are interpreted as crevasse splays. Facies Association 4 is a series of shale and siltstones, which are interpreted as overbank fines or floodplains. They are rich in organic material, both plant and vertebrate, and are heavily bioturbated. Together, these facies associations suggest that the depositional environment in this area was an anastomosing river system. This interpretation will provide a lithologic context for further paleontological work done on Carey Butte
A Back-reaction Induced Lower Bound on the Tensor-to-Scalar Ratio
There are large classes of inflationary models, particularly popular in the
context of string theory and brane world approaches to inflation, in which the
ratio of linearized tensor to scalar metric fluctuations is very small. In such
models, however, gravitational waves produced by scalar modes cannot be
neglected. We derive the lower bound on the tensor-to-scalar ratio by
considering the back-reaction of the scalar perturbations as a source of
gravitational waves. These results show that no cosmological model that is
compatible with a metric scalar amplitude of can have a ratio
of the tensor to scalar power spectra less than at
recombination and that higher-order terms leads to logarithmic growth for r
during radiation domination. Our lower bound also applies to non-inflationary
models which produce an almost scale-invariant spectrum of coherent
super-Hubble scale metric fluctuations.Comment: 5 pages, version 3, minor changes from version
Constructive role of dissipation for driven coupled bosonic modes
We describe four cases of childhood B-cell progenitor acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (BCP-ALL) and one of T-cell (T-ALL) with unexpected numbers of interphase signals for ETV6 with an ETV6-RUNX1 fusion probe. Three fusion negative cases each had a telomeric part of 12p terminating within intron 2 of ETV6, attached to sequences from 5q, 7p and 7q, respectively. Two fusion positive cases, with partial insertions of ETV6 into chromosome 21, also had a breakpoint in intron 2. Fluorescence in situ hybridisation ( FISH), array comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) and Molecular Copy-Number Counting (MCC) results were concordant for the T-cell case. Sequences downstream of TLX3 on chromosome 5 were deleted, leaving the intact gene closely apposed to the first two exons of ETV6 and its upstream promoter. qRT-PCR showed a significant upregulation of TLX3. In this study we provide the first incontrovertible evidence that the upstream promoter of ETV6 attached to the first two exons of the gene was responsible for the ectopic expression of a proto-oncogene that became abnormally close as the result of deletion and translocation. We have also shown breakpoints in intron 2 of ETV6 in two cases of insertion with ETV6-RUNX1 fusion
320g Ionization-Heat Cryogenic Detector for Dark Matter Search in the EDELWEISS Experiment
The EDELWEISS experiment used in 2001 a 320g heat-and-ionization cryogenic Ge
detector operated in a low-background environment in the Laboratoire Souterrain
de Modane for direct WIMP detection. This detector presents an increase of more
than 4 times the mass of previous detectors. Calibrations of this detector are
used to determine its energy resolution and fiducial volume, and to optimize
the detector design for the 1kg phase of the EDELWEISS-I experiment. Analysis
of the calibrations and characteristics of a first series of 320g-detectors are
presented.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Mechanical strength and thermophysical properties of PM212: A high temperature self-lubricating powder metallurgy composite
A powder metallurgy composite, PM212, composed of metal bonded chromium carbide and solid lubricants is shown to be self-lubricating to a maximum application temperature of 900 C. The high temperature compressive strength, tensile strength, thermal expansion and thermal conductivity data needed to design PM212 sliding contact bearings and seals are reported for sintered and isostatically pressed (HIPed) versions of PM212. Other properties presented are room temperature density, hardness, and elastic modulus. In general, both versions appear to have adequate strength to be considered as sliding contact bearing materials, but the HIPed version, which is fully dense, is much stronger than the sintered version which contains about 20 percent pore volume. The sintered material is less costly to make, but the HIPed version is better where high compressive strength is important

H.E.S.S. observations of galaxy clusters
Clusters of galaxies, the largest gravitationally bound objects in the
universe, are expected to contain a significant population of hadronic and
leptonic cosmic rays. Potential sources for these particles are merger and
accretion shocks, starburst driven galactic winds and radio galaxies.
Furthermore, since galaxy clusters confine cosmic ray protons up to energies of
at least 1 PeV for a time longer than the Hubble time they act as storehouses
and accumulate all the hadronic particles which are accelerated within them.
Consequently clusters of galaxies are potential sources of VHE (> 100 GeV)
gamma rays. Motivated by these considerations, promising galaxy clusters are
observed with the H.E.S.S. experiment as part of an ongoing campaign. Here,
upper limits for the VHE gamma ray emission for the Abell 496 and Coma cluster
systems are reported.Comment: Contribution to the 30th ICRC, Merida Mexico, July 200
Cellular and Cytokine Responses in the Granulomas of Asymptomatic Cattle naturally infected with Mycobacterium bovis in Ethiopia
Cells (CD3+ T cell and CD68+ macrophages), cytokines (IFN-γ+ and TNF-α+) and effector molecule (iNOS+) responses were evaluated in the lymph nodes and tissue of cattle naturally infected with Detailed post mortem and immunohistochemical examinations of lesions were performed on 16 cows positive for single intradermal cervical comparative tuberculin (SICCT) test which were identified from dairy farms located around the Addis Ababa City. The severity of the gross lesion was significantly higher (p=0.003) in culture positive (n=12) cows than in culture negative (n=4). Immunohistochemical techniques showed that in culture positive cows, the mean immunolabeling fraction of CD3+ T cells decreased as the stage of granuloma increased from stage I to stage IV (p<0.001). In contrast, the immunolabelling fraction of CD68+ macrophages, IFN-γ+, TNF-α+ and iNOS+ increased from stage I to stage IV (p< 0.001). In culture negative cows, early stages showed a significantly higher fraction of CD68+ macrophages (p=0.03) and iNOS+ (p=0.007) when compared to culture positive cows. Similarly, at advanced granuloma stages, culture negative cows demonstrated significantly higher mean proportions of CD3+ T cells (p< 0.001) compared to culture positive cows. Thus, this study demonstrates that following natural infection of cows with , as the stage of granuloma increases from stage I to stage IV, the immunolabelling fraction of CD3+ cells decreases while the immunolabeling fraction of CD68+ macrophages, IFN-γ+, TNF-α+ and iNOS+ increases.
