Abstract computation in schizophrenia detection through artificial neural network based systems
Schizophrenia stands for a long-lasting state of mental uncertainty that may bring to an end the relation among behavior, thought, and emotion; that is, it may lead to unreliable perception, not suitable actions and feelings, and a sense of mental fragmentation. Indeed, its diagnosis is done over a large period of time; continuos signs of the disturbance persist for at least 6 (six) months. Once detected, the psychiatrist diagnosis is made through the clinical interview and a series of psychic tests, addressed mainly to avoid the diagnosis of other mental states or diseases. Undeniably, the main problem with identifying schizophrenia is the difficulty to distinguish its symptoms from those associated to different untidiness or roles. Therefore, this work will focus on the development of a diagnostic support system, in terms of its knowledge representation and reasoning procedures, based on a blended of Logic Programming and Artificial Neural Networks approaches to computing, taking advantage of a novel approach to knowledge representation and reasoning, which aims to solve the problems associated in the handling (i.e., to stand for and reason) of defective information.This work is funded by National Funds through the FCT, Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology) within projects PEstOE/EEI/UI0752/2014 and PEst-OE/QUI/UI0619/2012

Cosmoglobe: Towards end-to-end CMB cosmological parameter estimation without likelihood approximations
We implement support for a cosmological parameter estimation algorithm as
proposed by Racine et al. (2016) in Commander, and quantify its computational
efficiency and cost. For a semi-realistic simulation similar to Planck LFI 70
GHz, we find that the computational cost of producing one single sample is
about 60 CPU-hours and that the typical Markov chain correlation length is
100 samples. The net effective cost per independent sample is 6 000
CPU-hours, in comparison with all low-level processing costs of 812 CPU-hours
for Planck LFI and WMAP in Cosmoglobe Data Release 1. Thus, although
technically possible to run already in its current state, future work should
aim to reduce the effective cost per independent sample by at least one order
of magnitude to avoid excessive runtimes, for instance through multi-grid
preconditioners and/or derivative-based Markov chain sampling schemes. This
work demonstrates the computational feasibility of true Bayesian cosmological
parameter estimation with end-to-end error propagation for high-precision CMB
experiments without likelihood approximations, but it also highlights the need
for additional optimizations before it is ready for full production-level

Guarana (Paullinia cupana var. sorbilis), an anciently consumed stimulant from the Amazon rain forest: the seeded-fruit transcriptome.
Guarana (Paullinia cupana var. sorbilis) is a plant native to the central Amazon basin. Roasted seed extracts have been used as medicinal beverages since pre-Colombian times, due to their reputation as stimulants, aphrodisiacs, tonics, as well as protectors of the gastrointestinal tract. Guarana plants are commercially cultivated exclusively in Brazil to supply the national carbonated soft-drink industry and natural product stores around the world. In this report, we describe and discuss the annotation of 15,387 ESTs from guarana seeded-fruits, highlighting sequences from the flavonoid and purine alkaloid pathways, and those related to biotic stress avoidance. This is the largest set of sequences registered for the Sapindaceae family
Can we predict real-time fMRI neurofeedback learning success from pretraining brain activity?
Neurofeedback training has been shown to influence behavior in healthy participants as well as to alleviate clinical symptoms in neurological, psychosomatic, and psychiatric patient populations. However, many real-time fMRI neurofeedback studies report large inter-individual differences in learning success. The factors that cause this vast variability between participants remain unknown and their identification could enhance treatment success. Thus, here we employed a meta-analytic approach including data from 24 different neurofeedback studies with a total of 401 participants, including 140 patients, to determine whether levels of activity in target brain regions during pretraining functional localizer or no-feedback runs (i.e., self-regulation in the absence of neurofeedback) could predict neurofeedback learning success. We observed a slightly positive correlation between pretraining activity levels during a functional localizer run and neurofeedback learning success, but we were not able to identify common brain-based success predictors across our diverse cohort of studies. Therefore, advances need to be made in finding robust models and measures of general neurofeedback learning, and in increasing the current study database to allow for investigating further factors that might influence neurofeedback learning
Increase in Non-AIDS Related Conditions as Causes of Death among HIV-Infected Individuals in the HAART Era in Brazil
Background. In 1996, Brazil became the first developing country to provide free and universal access to HAART. Although a decrease in overall mortality has been documented, there are no published data on the impact of HAART on causes of death among HIV-infected individuals in Brazil. We assessed temporal trends of mortality due to cardiovascular diseases (CVD), diabetes mellitus (DM) and other conditions generally not associated with HIV-infection among persons with and without HIV infection in Brazil between 1999 and 2004. Methodology/Principal Findings. Odds ratios were used to compare causes of death in individuals who had HIV/AIDS listed on any field of the death certificate with those who did not. Logistic regression models were fitted with generalized estimating equations to account for spatial correlation; co-variables were added to the models to control for potential confounding. Of 5,856,056 deaths reported in Brazil between 1999 and 2004 67,249 (1.15%) had HIV/AIDS listed on the death certificate and non-HIV-related conditions were listed on 16.3% in 1999, Increasing to 24.1% by 2004 (p<0.001) The adjusted average yearly increases were 8% and 0.8% for CVD (p<0.001), and 12% and 2.8% for DM (p<0.001), for those who had and kiki not have HIV/AIDS listed on the death certificate respectively. Similar results were found for these conditions as underlying causes of death. Conclusions/Significance. In Brazil between 1999 and 2004 conditions usually considered not to be related to HIV-infection appeared to become more likely causes of death over time than reported causes of death among individuals who had HIV/AIDS listed on the death certificate than in those who did not. This observation has important programmatic implications for developing countries that are scaling-up access to antiretroviral therapy. © 2008 Pacheco et al
Análise comparativa multicriterial de estratégias em sustentabilidade urbana aplicada aos bairros de Cidade Pedra Branca (Palhoça, SC) e Vauban (Freiburg, Alemanha)
Resumo As áreas urbanas podem ser consideradas sistemas físicos, funcionais e também energéticos, nos quais seus componentes apresentam interdependências que condicionam seu metabolismo, desempenho e eficiência. O objetivo do presente artigo é analisar, de forma comparativa e multicriterial, estratégias em sustentabilidade urbana, na escala de bairros, tomando por base os casos de Cidade Pedra Branca (Palhoça, Brasil) e Vauban (Freiburg, Alemanha). Parâmetros e indicadores relativos à governança, morfologia urbana, mobilidade e acessibilidade urbanas, eficiência energética e suprimento de energia foram identificados, sistematizados e analisados segundo seu potencial de resolução de desafios técnicos, sociais, econômicos, ambientais e/ou institucionais. Os resultados mostraram que o planejamento urbano na escala do bairro pode colaborar decisivamente para melhorar as condições de vida das comunidades urbanas e auxiliar na administração municipal e setorial. Mostraram-se ainda promissoras as seguintes estratégias: forte governança pelo setor público ou pelos proprietários dos empreendimentos para controlar o cronograma e a qualidade dos projetos; aplicação de estratégia intersetorial para tornar mais eficiente o sistema de mobilidade urbana; e valorização da gestão da demanda de energia para ampliar o uso de energias renováveis e locais
Cosmoglobe DR1 results. I. Improved Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe maps through Bayesian end-to-end analysis
We present Cosmoglobe Data Release 1, which implements the first joint
analysis of WMAP and Planck LFI time-ordered data, processed within a single
Bayesian end-to-end framework. This framework builds directly on a similar
analysis of the LFI measurements by the BeyondPlanck collaboration, and
approaches the CMB analysis challenge through Gibbs sampling of a global
posterior distribution, simultaneously accounting for calibration, mapmaking,
and component separation. The computational cost of producing one complete
WMAP+LFI Gibbs sample is 812 CPU-hr, of which 603 CPU-hrs are spent on WMAP
low-level processing; this demonstrates that end-to-end Bayesian analysis of
the WMAP data is computationally feasible. We find that our WMAP posterior mean
temperature sky maps and CMB temperature power spectrum are largely consistent
with the official WMAP9 results. Perhaps the most notable difference is that
our CMB dipole amplitude is , which is $11\
\mathrm{\mu K}2.5\ {\sigma}$ higher than
BeyondPlanck; however, it is in perfect agreement with the HFI-dominated Planck
PR4 result. In contrast, our WMAP polarization maps differ more notably from
the WMAP9 results, and in general exhibit significantly lower large-scale
residuals. We attribute this to a better constrained gain and transmission
imbalance model. It is particularly noteworthy that the W-band polarization sky
map, which was excluded from the official WMAP cosmological analysis, for the
first time appears visually consistent with the V-band sky map. Similarly, the
long standing discrepancy between the WMAP K-band and LFI 30 GHz maps is
finally resolved, and the difference between the two maps appears consistent
with instrumental noise at high Galactic latitudes. All maps and the associated
