The effect of poly(lactide)-poly(carbonate) based block copolymers on the morphology and crystallization of double crystalline poly(lactide)/poly(ε-caprolactone) blends
Block copolymers of poly(lactide) and poly(carbonate) were synthetized in three different compositions and characterized by 1H-NMR and ATR analyses. The compatibilization effect of this copolymers on 80/20 (w/w%) PLA/PCL blend was evaluated. SEM micrographs show that all the blends exhibit the typical sea-island morphology characteristic of immiscible blends with PCL finely dispersed in droplets on a PLA matrix. Upon the addiction of the copolymers a reduction on PCL droplets size is observable. At the same time, a Tg depression of the PLA phase is detected when the copolymers are added in the blend. These results indicate that these copolymers are effective as compatibilizers. The copolymer that acts as the best compatibilizer is the one characterized by the same amount of PLA and PC as repeating units. As result, in the blend containing this copolymer PLA phase exhibits the highest spherulitic growth rate. An analyses on PLA phase crystallization behaviour from the glassy state within the blends was evaluated by DSC experiments. Isothermal cold crystallization of the PLA phase is enhanced up an order of magnitude upon the blending with PCL. Annealing experiments demonstrated that the crystallization of the PCL phase induces the formation of active nuclei in PLA when cooled above cooled below Tg. When the crystallization rate of PCL is retarded, a reduction on PLA nucleation is observed
Non-technological barriers to the diffusion of energy-efficient HVAC&R solutions in the food retail sector
SuperSmart is an European Union (EU) project aiming at speeding up the uptake of energy-efficient re- frigeration, heating and cooling solutions for Europe\u2019s food retail sector, reducing its energy use, lowering its environmental footprint and increasing its economic benefits. The project pursues the removal of non- technological barriers to efficient heating & cooling in the European food retail sector and supports the introduction of a new EU Ecolabel for food retail stores. Non-technological barriers have been mapped and categorized by preliminary interviewing food re- tail sector stakeholders. While highlighting a general positive attitude towards energy efficiency of the sector stakeholders, the results of the survey reveal the need for specific actions focused on improving the knowledge level of technical staff, from the planning and design stage down to servicing and main- tenance. Raising awareness about available technology and financial support is also required. In general terms, barriers are always perceived as stronger when moving North to South, and West to East in Europe, thus emphasizing the need for homogenization of virtuous practices and attitudes throughout Europ
Bosonic Helium droplets with cationic impurities: onset of electrostriction and snowball effects from quantum calculations
Variational MonteCarlo and Diffusion MonteCarlo calculations have been
carried out for cations like Li, Na and K as dopants of small
helium clusters over a range of cluster sizes up to about 12 solvent atoms. The
interaction has been modelled through a sum-of-potential picture that
disregards higher order effects beyond atom-atom and atom-ion contributions.
The latter were obtained from highly correlated ab-initio calculations over a
broad range of interatomic distances.
This study focuses on two of the most striking features of the microsolvation
in a quantum solvent of a cationic dopant: electrostriction and snowball
effects. They are here discussed in detail and in relation with the nanoscopic
properties of the interaction forces at play within a fully quantum picture of
the clusters features
Synthesis and X-ray crystal structure of [2(phosphinomethyl)ferrocenyl]diphenyl-phosphine
[2-(Phosphinomethyl)ferrocenyl]diphenylphosphine 2, is an air stable primary phosphine bearing a 1,2-disubstituted ferrocene framework, which has been prepared by reduction of the corresponding phosphonate. Confirmation of its structure has been obtained by X-ray single-crystals diffraction analysis. Despite its high stability toward oxidation, phosphine 2 still displays a normal coordinative behaviour toward [(pi-cymene)RuCl2]2. The expected (pi-cymene)RuCl2(phosphine) complex is formed by coordination of the primary phosphine function, while the conceivably competitive complexation of the PPh2 group was not observed
Theatre as a 'translation zone': multilingualism, identity and the performing body in the work of Teatro delle Albe
This article argues that the theatre is a site of multiple forms of translation. Alongside textual travel from page to stage, from the past to the present and from language to language, theatrical performance also creates ‘translation zones’ (Apter, 2006: 5) where languages and cultures are negotiated, challenged and hybridized. By focussing on the practice of intercultural theatre, I investigate the way in which multiple languages on the stage interact with the performing body of the actor. Paying attention to how linguistic and cultural identities are constructed on the stage, I examine four productions by arguably the most significant intercultural company in the Italian theatrical landscape, Teatro delle Albe. My purpose is to argue that translation in the theatre occurs not only discursively, through subsequent rewritings of a foreign text, but also performatively, through the negotiation of multiple languages in performance and the creative juxtaposition of those languages with the actor’s body, ethnicity and role. Translation, in this sense, is understood – in the direction of much contemporary culturally-oriented translation studies – less as a communicative act aimed at transferring texts or conveying ideas than as a ‘fundamentally hybridizing instance’ (Sakai, 1997: 3), which is at once linguistic, cultural, aesthetic and political
Venetico
