Distance and intersection number in the curve graph of a surface
In this work, we study the cellular decomposition of induced by a filling
pair of curves and , , and its connection
to the distance function in the curve graph of a closed orientable
surface of genus . Efficient geodesics were introduced by the first
author in joint work with Margalit and Menasco in 2016, giving an algorithm
that begins with a pair of non-separating filling curves that determine
vertices in the curve graph of a closed orientable surface and
computing from them a finite set of {\it efficient} geodesics. We extend the
tools of efficient geodesics to study the relationship between distance
, intersection number , and . The main result is
the development and analysis of particular configurations of rectangles in
called \textit{spirals}. We are able to show that, in some
special cases, the efficient geodesic algorithm can be used to build an
algorithm that reduces while preserving . At the end of the
paper, we note a connection of our work to the notion of extending geodesics.Comment: 20 pages, 17 figures. Changes: A key lemma (Lemma 5.6) was revised to

Introduction to 2D and 3D tomographic methods based on straight line propagation: X-ray, emission and ultrasonic tomography
This paper presents the basic principles of computerized tomography (CT), and its evolution towards three dimensional (3D )
imaging . Since the modelisation of CT reconstruction relies on the Radon transform, its definition and major properties are firs t
recalled. After a brief summary on conventional 2D methods, we present the imaging principles for two modalities appropriate d
to this modelisation : X-Ray and emission tomography. We describe the evolution of the instrumentation for these two techniques ,
and emphasize the approximations introduced by a modelisation using the Radon transform taking into account the physics o f
the problem . We also describe the principles of ultrasonic tomography systems, and their major differences with the two previou s
technics . At last, we formulate the general problematic of 3D image reconstruction from 2D projections . We consider four classe s
of reconstruction methods corresponding to the classification chosen for the synthetic presentation of methods, accompanying thi s
paper.

An active mesh for movement estimation with discontinuities
We aim at modeling a motion vector field by processing a sequence of images. We focus on the detection of
motion discontinuities experimented by a moving deformable object. The method is based on a multiscale
approach. A Markov Random (MR) label field is built at each scale from an initial distribution of the field. The
ground of the motion estimation is a spatial partition of the image given by an elastic mesh superimposed onto
the data. The mesh deforms, driven by some selected image features (intensity gradients), under the constraint
that the motion field remains locally coherent and uniform within each patch. The motion vector field and the elastic
mesh are obtained by minimizing a non-convex energy function considering the image features and the motion
vector field simultaneously. Each term of the energy function is defined in a multiscale Markovian context and minimized
according to the maximum a posteriori (MAP) criterion. The mesh deformation and the modeling of the
related vector field both contribute to the iterative « top-down » optimization process within an alternate relaxation
scheme. The model copes with discontinuities thanks to the adaptive partition of the image. The ridges of the mesh progressively move toward the motion discontinuities. The results on noisy complex synthetic sequences
show a good estimation of the motion vector field with strong discontinuities at the object interfaces. We apply

Model computation and matching with the neuractive pyramid
This paper introduces the neuractive pyramids to model objects under elastic deformations . One pyramid is built on each frame
of the image sequence . Each level of the pyramid is a regular graph that is recursively built on a low-pass version of the original
picture . Cells of this graph deform to model the local information of the picture . Deformations are obtained by the minimization of
an energy function computed both on the gradient of the picture and the graph structure . Each cell contains a vector of statistical
moments computed on its domain and its neighborood . Matching pyramids defines a vector Field of local elastic transformations .
The matching operator is based on a self-organizing map, introduced by Kohonen . Softness and multiresolution aspects of the
pyramids allow accurate and robust results . An application to the matching of 2D cardiac MRI scans shows the interest of the
Optimal co-occurrence matrix for automatic segmentation of ultrasonic images
This paper introduces a new method of segmentation using automatic
thresholding adapted to the NDT ultrasonic images . This study is based
on image analysis through co-occurrence matrixes . It shows an optimization
of the r and 0 parameters of the co-occurrence matrix enabling to
define more acurately the border between noise and defect echoes . The
segmentation is obtained by automatically taking into account a threshold
derived from a determination curve calculated front the co-occurrence
matrix . This curve, called Average Product of Variances Measure, is an analysis of the distribution of the matrix coefficients . The results show
behaviors of the co-occurrence matrixes and of the threshold selection
curves that justify perfectly the analysis performed on the characteristics
Modeling and tracking of the cardiac left ventricular motion by a linear harmonic model in MRI sequence
In this article, we propose a new method for modeling the left ventricular motion of the heart from a magnetic resonance imaging
(MRI) sequence. We propose to model the space-time trajectory of the points of the endocardial (respectively epicardial)
contour of the left ventricle (LV) using a harmonic model of movement, which is linear and can describe the dynamics of the left ventricle throughout the cardiac cycle. This new model is based on the assumption of quasi-periodicity of the cardiac cycle and
uses a Kalman filter as estimation tool.
We first refer to the main works in the field, then describing our method. We give the way to get the space-time trajectories of
the contour points of the LV. We present the model with the selected state equations and the Kalman filter based motion estimate.
We propose two methods of calculation. The direct one provides a solution for a fixed rank of the harmonic model. The
recursive one allows progressively go from rank n to rank n + 1 without prior choice. The model is validated on simulated data
by direct comparison with the traditional Fourier decomposition approach. It is shown that it fits well the studied trajectories.
The results obtained on real cardiac sequences are particularly interesting because they demonstrate the capability of our
method to discriminate unambiguously normal cases from pathological cases.
