Neonatal screening for cystic fibrosis in São Paulo State, Brazil : a pilot study
Cystic fibrosis is one of the most common autosomal recessive hereditary diseases in the Caucasian population, with an incidence of 1:2000 to 1:3500 liveborns. More than 1000 mutations have been described with the most common being F508del. It has a prevalence of 23-55% within the Brazilian population. The lack of population-based studies evaluating the incidence of cystic fibrosis in São Paulo State, Brazil, and an analysis concerning the costs of implantation of a screening program motivated the present study. A total of 60,000 dried blood samples from Guthrie cards obtained from April 2005 to January 2006 for neonatal screening at 4 reference centers in São Paulo State were analyzed. The immunoreactive trypsinogen (IRT)/IRT protocol was used with the cut-off value being 70 ng/mL. A total of 532 children (0.9%) showed IRT >70 ng/mL and a 2nd sample was collected from 418 (80.3%) of these patients. Four affected children were detected at two centers, corresponding to an incidence of 1:8403. The average age at diagnosis was 69 days, and 3 of the children already showed severe symptoms of the disease. The rate of false-positive results was 95.2% and the positive predictive value for the test was 8%. The cost of detecting an affected subject was approximately US$8,000.00 when this cystic fibrosis program was added to an existing neonatal screening program. The present study clearly shows the difficulties involved in cystic fibrosis screening using the IRT/IRT protocol, particularly in a population with no long-term tradition of neonatal screening421
A novel determination of the local dark matter density
We present a novel study on the problem of constructing mass models for the
Milky Way, concentrating on features regarding the dark matter halo component.
We have considered a variegated sample of dynamical observables for the Galaxy,
including several results which have appeared recently, and studied a 7- or
8-dimensional parameter space - defining the Galaxy model - by implementing a
Bayesian approach to the parameter estimation based on a Markov Chain Monte
Carlo method. The main result of this analysis is a novel determination of the
local dark matter halo density which, assuming spherical symmetry and either an
Einasto or an NFW density profile is found to be around 0.39 GeV cm with
a 1- error bar of about 7%; more precisely we find a for the Einasto profile and for the NFW. This is in contrast to the
standard assumption that is about 0.3 GeV cm with an
uncertainty of a factor of 2 to 3. A very precise determination of the local
halo density is very important for interpreting direct dark matter detection
experiments. Indeed the results we produced, together with the recent accurate
determination of the local circular velocity, should be very useful to
considerably narrow astrophysical uncertainties on direct dark matter
detection.Comment: 31 pages,11 figures; minor changes in the text; two figures adde
Dengue in Madeira Island
This is a preprint of a paper whose final and definite form will be published in the volume
Mathematics of Planet Earth that initiates the book series CIM Series in Mathematical Sciences
(CIM-MS) published by Springer. Submitted Oct/2013; Revised 16/July/2014 and 20/Sept/2014;
Accepted 28/Sept/2014.Dengue is a vector-borne disease and 40% of world population is at risk.
Dengue transcends international borders and can be found in tropical and subtropical
regions around the world, predominantly in urban and semi-urban areas. A
model for dengue disease transmission, composed by mutually-exclusive compartments
representing the human and vector dynamics, is presented in this study. The
data is from Madeira, a Portuguese island, where an unprecedented outbreak was
detected on October 2012. The aim of this work is to simulate the repercussions of
the control measures in the fight of the disease

Measurement of the Top Quark Pair Production Cross Section in pbar-p Collisions Using Multijet Final States
We have studied tbar-t production using multijet final states in pbar-p
collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV, with an integrated luminosity
of 110.3 pb(-1). Each of the top quarks with these final states decays
exclusively to a bottom quark and a W boson, with the W bosons decaying into
quark-antiquark pairs. The analysis has been optimized using neural networks to
achieve the smallest expected fractional uncertainty on the tbar-t production
cross section, and yields a cross section of 7.1 +/- 2.8(stat.) +/- 1.5(syst.)
pb, assuming a top quark mass of 172.1 GeV/c^(2). Combining this result with
previous D0 measurements, where one or both of the W bosons decay leptonically,
gives a tbar t production cross section of 5.9 +/- 1.2(stat) +/- 1.1(syst) pb.Comment: 30 pages, 32 figures; no substative change in revisio

Improved W boson mass measurement with the D0 detector
We have measured the W boson mass using the D0 detector and a data sample of
82 pb^-1 from the Tevatron collider. This measurement used W -> e nu decays,
where the electron is close to a boundary of a central electromagnetic
calorimeter module. Such 'edge' electrons have not been used in any previous D0
analysis, and represent a 14% increase in the W boson sample size. For these
electrons, new response and resolution parameters are determined, and revised
backgrounds and underlying event energy flow measurements are made. When the
current measurement is combined with previous D0 W boson mass measurements, we
obtain M_W = 80.483 +/- 0.084 GeV. The 8% improvement from the previous D0
measurement is primarily due to the improved determination of the response
parameters for non-edge electrons using the sample of Z bosons with non-edge
and edge electrons.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev. D; 20 pages, 18 figures, 9 table
