    A multidimensional hydrodynamic code for structure evolution in cosmology

    A cosmological multidimensional hydrodynamic code is described and tested. This code is based on modern high-resolution shock-capturing techniques. It can make use of a linear or a parabolic cell reconstruction as well as an approximate Riemann solver. The code has been specifically designed for cosmological applications. Two tests including shocks have been considered: the first one is a standard shock tube and the second test involves a spherically symmetric shock. Various additional cosmological tests are also presented. In this way, the performance of the code is proved.     Gravitational waves from galaxy clusters: a new observable effect

    A rich galaxy cluster showing strong resemblance with the observed ones is simulated. Cold dark matter spectrum, Gaussian statistics, flat universe, and two components -- baryonic gas plus dark matter particles -- are considered. We have calculated the gravitational-wave output during the epoch of the fully nonlinear and nonsymmetric cluster evolution. The amplitudes and frequencies of the resulting gravitational waves are estimated. Since frequencies are very small --of the order of 1017Hz10^{-17} Hz -- a complete pulse cannot be observed during an admissible integration time; nevertheless, it is proved that these waves can produce an interesting secular effect which appears to be observable with current technology.Comment: 15 LaTEX pages, two postscript figures. In his discussion of the case, Dr. Bates does not sufficiently emphasize the importance of the recognition of periarticular ankle inflammation as a particular presenting sign of acute sarcoidosis. In the Nordic countries and Spain, Löfgren's syndrome is the most common form of the disease and frequently starts with periarticular ankle inflammation. In our series of 186 white patients with Löfgren's syndrome, 35 (19 percent) presented with periarticular ankle inflammation alone and 46 (25 percent) had periarticular ankle inflammation in association with erythema nodosum

    Employing the chiral bi-compartmental Schiff-base ligand H2L obtained from the condensation of (RR) or (SS)-1,2-diphenyl-ethylenediamine and o-vanillin, we report the structural characterization of the discrete dinuclear pairs of enantiomers [NiIIEuIII] 1RR, 1SS and [ZnIIEuIII] 2RR, 2SS and the magnetic properties for the series of complexes [NiIILnIII], Ln = Ce, 3RR; Nd, 4RR; Dy, 5RR; Er, 6RR, Yb, 7SS and [ZnIILnIII], Ln = Ce, 8RR; Nd, 9RR; Dy, 10SS; Er, 11SS and Yb, 12RR in which MII is diamagnetic and LnIII is a Kramers lanthanide. Single crystal X-ray diffraction shows that relevant changes in the [ZnIILnIII] structures are produced after a period in open air (2RRb, 2RRc), evidencing that the lability of the ligands bonded to ZnII can modify the structures that will be correlated to the experimental measurements. The dynamic magnetic measurements showed that the [NiIILnIII] and [ZnIILnIII] derivatives exhibit different behaviors in the relaxation of magnetization especially for oblate and prolate LnIII cations

    Darbepoetin Versus Epoetin Alfa for the Correction of Anemia in Cancer Patients Receiving Radiotherapy or Chemoradiotherapy Treatment

    Introduction Anemia is the most frequent hematological disturbance in cancer patients, with prevalence between 30% and 90%, depending on the type of tumor, the antitumor treatment, and other factors (infection, malnutrition, bleeding, tumor infiltration of the bone marrow). A number of erythropoietic agents have shown to be effective in increasing the hemoglobin (Hb) levels, reducing the requirements for transfusion, and improving quality of life. The objective of this study is to compare darbepoetin alfa and epoetin alfa when used to correct anemia in cancer patients who are receiving radiotherapy or radiochemotherapy. Material and methods A prospective study of 125 consecutive patients with anemia (Hb < 13 g/dL in males or < 12 g/dL in females) who were undergoing treatment with radiotherapy (RT) or radiochemotherapy (RCT) in our department were enrolled between March 2003 and March 2005. The treatment for the anemia was either darbepoetin alfa 150 mcg/week (62 patients, group 1) or epoetin alfa 40,000 IU/week (63 patients, group 2). Patients received iron supplements in both groups. Treatment was administered in a consecutive manner depending on tumor type. If the increase in Hb was < 1 g/dL after 4 weeks of treatment, the dose was increased to 300 mcg/week in group 1 or to 60,000 IU/week in group 2. The treatment was terminated when a Hb value of ≥ 15 g/dL was reached during RT treatment, a Hb value of ≥ 14 g/dL was reached if the RT had been completed, or after 16 weeks of treatment whatever the Hb value. The mean age of patients was 63.36 ± 11.27 years, 67% were male. No significant differences were observed between the 2 groups in tumor type or stage, previous treatments, or intent to treat with RT or RCT. Results Comparing group 1 and group 2 by intent to treat, the mean Hb at the start of treatment with the study drug was 12.1 g/dL vs 11.8 g/dL, the proportion of patients whose dose was increased was19.7% vs 24.6%, the need for transfusion was 3.2% in each group, the duration of erythropoietic treatment was 6.5 weeks in both groups, and 2 patients in group 2 restarted treatment with epoetin alfa. The percentage of patients who responded (defined as an increase in the Hb ≥ 2 g/dL in the absence of transfusions) was of 72.6% and 66.7%, respectively. Four vascular adverse events were observed, 2 in each group. No significant differences were observed with respect to the baseline, week 4, and week 12 levels of endogenous erythropoietin, serum iron,% saturation, and ferritin. The increase in Hb 1 month after the final administration of the study drug was 2.21 g/dL in group 1 and 2.46 g/dL in group 2 (p = ns). Conclusions The results of our study demonstrate that both treatments are equally effective in correcting anemia in cancer patients undergoing RT or RCT

    Influence of PPh3 moiety in the anticancer activity of new organometallic ruthenium complexes

    The effect of the PPh3 group in the antitumor activity of some new organometallic Ruthenium (II) complexes has been investigated. Several complexes of the type [Ru(II)(Cl)(PPh3)(Lig-N)], [Ru(II)(Cl)2(Lig-N)] (where Lig-N=pyridine derivate) and [Ru(II)(Cl)(PPh3)2], have been synthesized and characterized, and an important increment of the antitumor activity and cytotoxicity of the complexes due to the presence of PPh3 moiety has been demonstrated, affording IC50 values of 5.2 μM in HL-60 tumour cell lines. Atomic Force Microscopy, Circular Dichroism and Electrophoresis experiments have proved that these complexes can bind DNA resulting in a distortion of both secondary and tertiary structures. Ethidium bromide displacement Fluorescence Spectroscopy studies and Viscosity measurements support that the presence of PPh3 group induces intercalation interactions with DNA. Indeed, crystallographic analysis, suggest that intra-molecular π-π interactions could be involved in the intercalation within DNA base pairs. Furthermore, HPLC-MS studies have confirmed a strong interaction between Ruthenium complexes and proteins (Ubiquitin and Potato Carboxypeptidase Inhibitor -PCI-) including slower kinetic due to the presence of PPh3 moiety, which could have an important role in detoxification mechanism and others. Finally, Ion Mobility Mass Spectrometry (IMMS) experiments have proved that there is no change in the structural conformation of the proteins owing to their bonding to Ruthenium complexes. This seems particularly important in the case of PCI, that may be a suitable candidate for vehiculizing these complexes in a selective manner into tumour cells. In agreement with these results, further investigations should be carried out to clarify either there is a favoured binding to DNA or to specific proteins, thus to elucidate their main biological target

    Estimation of the prevalence and incidence of motor neuron diseases in two Spanish regions: Catalonia and Valencia

    According to the degree of upper and lower motor neuron degeneration, motor neuron diseases (MND) can be categorized into amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), primary lateral sclerosis (PLS) or progressive muscular atrophy (PMA). Although several studies have addressed the prevalence and incidence of ALS, there is a high heterogeneity in their results. Besides this, neither concept has been previously studied in PLS or PMA. Thus, the objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence and incidence of MND, (distinguishing ALS, PLS and PMA), in the Spanish regions of Catalonia and Valencia in the period 2011-2019. Two population-based Spanish cohorts were used, one from Catalonia and the other from Valencia. Given that the samples that comprised both cohorts were not random, i.e., leading to a selection bias, we used a two-part model in which both the individual and contextual observed and unobserved confounding variables are controlled for, along with the spatial and temporal dependence. The prevalence of MND was estimated to be between 3.990 and 6.334 per 100,000 inhabitants (ALS between 3.248 and 5.120; PMA between 0.065 and 0.634; and PLS between 0.046 and 1.896), and the incidence between 1.682 and 2.165 per 100,000 person-years for MND (ALS between 1.351 and 1.754; PMA between 0.225 and 0.628; and PLS between 0.409-0.544). Results were similar in the two regions and did not differ from those previously reported for ALS, suggesting that the proposed method is robust and that neither region presents differential risk or protective factors

    Estimating peanut and soybean photosynthetic traits using leaf spectral reflectance and advance regression models

    One proposed key strategy for increasing potential crop stability and yield centers on exploitation of genotypic variability in photosynthetic capacity through precise high-throughput phenotyping techniques. Photosynthetic parameters, such as the maximum rate of Rubisco catalyzed carboxylation (Vc,max) and maximum electron transport rate supporting RuBP regeneration (Jmax), have been identified as key targets for improvement. The primary techniques for measuring these physiological parameters are very time-consuming. However, these parameters could be estimated using rapid and non-destructive leaf spectroscopy techniques. This study compared four different advanced regression models (PLS, BR, ARDR, and LASSO) to estimate Vc,max and Jmax based on leaf reflectance spectra measured with an ASD FieldSpec4. Two leguminous species were tested under different controlled environmental conditions: (1) peanut under different water regimes at normal atmospheric conditions and (2) soybean under high [CO2] and high night temperature. Model sensitivities were assessed for each crop and treatment separately and in combination to identify strengths and weaknesses of each modeling approach. Regardless of regression model, robust predictions were achieved for Vc,max (R2 = 0.70) and Jmax (R2 = 0.50). Field spectroscopy shows promising results for estimating spatial and temporal variations in photosynthetic capacity based on leaf and canopy spectral properties
