Which mechanism underlies the water-like anomalies in core-softened potentials?
Using molecular dynamics simulations we investigate the thermodynamic of
particles interacting with a continuous and a discrete versions of a
core-softened (CS) intermolecular potential composed by a repulsive shoulder.
Dynamic and structural properties are also analyzed by the simulations. We show
that in the continuous version of the CS potential the density at constant
pressure has a maximum for a certain temperature. Similarly the diffusion
constant, , at a constant temperature has a maximum at a density
and a minimum at a density
, and structural properties are also
anomalous. For the discrete CS potential none of these anomalies are observed.
The absence of anomalies in the discrete case and its presence in the
continuous CS potential are discussed in the framework of the excess entropy.Comment: 8 page
A Renormalized Supersymmetry in the Topological Yang-Mills Field Theory
We reconsider the algebraic BRS renormalization of Witten's topological
Yang-Mills field theory by making use of a vector supersymmetry Ward identity
which improves the finiteness properties of the model. The vector
supersymmetric structure is a common feature of several topological theories.
The most general local counterterm is determined and is shown to be a trivial
BRS-coboundary.Comment: 18 pages, report REF. TUW 94-10 and UGVA-DPT 1994/07-85
Galerkin Method in the Gravitational Collapse: a Dynamical System Approach
We study the general dynamics of the spherically symmetric gravitational
collapse of a massless scalar field. We apply the Galerkin projection method to
transform a system of partial differential equations into a set of ordinary
differential equations for modal coefficients, after a convenient truncation
procedure, largely applied to problems of turbulence. In the present case, we
have generated a finite dynamical system that reproduces the essential features
of the dynamics of the gravitational collapse, even for a lower order of
truncation. Each initial condition in the space of modal coefficients
corresponds to a well definite spatial distribution of scalar field. Numerical
experiments with the dynamical system show that depending on the strength of
the scalar field packet, the formation of black-holes or the dispersion of the
scalar field leaving behind flat spacetime are the two main outcomes. We also
found numerical evidence that between both asymptotic states, there is a
critical solution represented by a limit cycle in the modal space with period

Modelling of Optical Detection of Spin-Polarized Carrier Injection into Light-Emitting Devices
We investigate the emission of multimodal polarized light from Light Emitting
Devices due to spin-aligned carriers injection. The results are derived through
operator Langevin equations, which include thermal and carrier-injection
fluctuations, as well as non-radiative recombination and electronic g-factor
temperature dependence. We study the dynamics of the optoelectronic processes
and show how the temperature-dependent g-factor and magnetic field affect the
polarization degree of the emitted light. In addition, at high temperatures,
thermal fluctuation reduces the efficiency of the optoelectronic detection
method for measuring spin-polarization degree of carrier injection into
non-magnetic semicondutors.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, replaced by revised version. To appear in Phys.

Molecular-assisted selection for resistance to cassava mosaic disease in Manihot esculenta Crantz
The geminivirus complex known as cassava mosaic disease (CMD) is one of the most devastating viruses for cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz). The aim of this study was to use molecular-assisted selection (MAS) to identify CMD-resistant accessions and ascertain promising crosses with elite Brazilian varieties. One thousand two hundred twenty-four accessions were genotyped using five molecular markers (NS169, NS158, SSRY028, SSRY040 and RME1) that were associated with resistance to CMD, along with 402 SNPs (single-nucleotide polymorphism). The promising crosses were identified using a discriminant analysis of main component (DAPC), and the matrix of genomic relationship was estimated with SNP markers. The CMD1 gene, previously described in M. glaziovii, was not found in M. esculenta. In contrast, the CMD2 gene was found in 5, 4 and 5 % of cassava accessions, with flanking markers NS169+RME1, NS158+RME1 and SSRY28+RME1, respectively. Only seven accessions presented all markers linked to the CMD resistance. The DAPC of the seven accessions along with 17 elite cassava varieties led to the formation of three divergent clusters. Potential sources of resistance to CMD were divided into two groups, while the elite varieties were distributed into three groups. The low estimates of the genomic relationship (ranging from -0.167 to 0.681 with an average of 0.076) contributed to the success in identifying contrasting genotypes. The use of MAS in countries where CMD is a quarantine disease constitutes a successful strategy not only for identifying the resistant accessions but also for determining the promising crosses
Design, development and verification of the 30 and 44 GHz front-end modules for the Planck Low Frequency Instrument
We give a description of the design, construction and testing of the 30 and
44 GHz Front End Modules (FEMs) for the Low Frequency Instrument (LFI) of the
Planck mission to be launched in 2009. The scientific requirements of the
mission determine the performance parameters to be met by the FEMs, including
their linear polarization characteristics.
The FEM design is that of a differential pseudo-correlation radiometer in
which the signal from the sky is compared with a 4-K blackbody load. The Low
Noise Amplifier (LNA) at the heart of the FEM is based on indium phosphide High
Electron Mobility Transistors (HEMTs). The radiometer incorporates a novel
phase-switch design which gives excellent amplitude and phase match across the
band.
The noise temperature requirements are met within the measurement errors at
the two frequencies. For the most sensitive LNAs, the noise temperature at the
band centre is 3 and 5 times the quantum limit at 30 and 44 GHz respectively.
For some of the FEMs, the noise temperature is still falling as the ambient
temperature is reduced to 20 K. Stability tests of the FEMs, including a
measurement of the 1/f knee frequency, also meet mission requirements.
The 30 and 44 GHz FEMs have met or bettered the mission requirements in all
critical aspects. The most sensitive LNAs have reached new limits of noise
temperature for HEMTs at their band centres. The FEMs have well-defined linear
polarization characteristcs.Comment: 39 pages, 33 figures (33 EPS files), 12 tables. Planck LFI technical
