    Reflectance of Natural Vegetation of Western Rajasthan Region in Visible and Near-infrared Spectra

    This paper presents the study of spectral characteristics of natural vegetation of Western Rajasthan region in the visible and the near-infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. The leaves of ten species of natural vegetation normally grow in Western Rajasthan were evaluated for their spectral reflectance in the wavelength range 400-900 nm under normal laboratory conditions. The change in reflectance due to change in physical condition of plants because of wilting has been observed for three consecutive days. To observe the change due to climatic conditions, the measurements have been carried out in two different seasons.     Giant parathyroid adenoma: A case report and review of the literature

    Background: Giant parathyroid adenoma is a rare type of parathyroid adenoma defined as weighing > 3.5 g. They present as primary hyperparathyroidism but with more elevated laboratory findings and more severe clinical presentations due to the larger tissue mass. This is the first reported case of giant parathyroid adenoma from the Middle East. Case presentation: A 52-year-old Indian woman presented with a palpable right-sided neck mass and generalized fatigue. Investigations revealed hypercalcemia with elevated parathyroid hormone and an asymptomatic kidney stone. Ultrasound showed a complex nodule with solid and cystic components, and Sestamibi nuclear scan confirmed a giant parathyroid adenoma. Focused surgical neck exploration was done and a giant parathyroid adenoma weighing 7.7 gm was excised. Conclusions: Giant parathyroid adenoma is a rare cause of primary hyperparathyroidism and usually presents symptomatically with high calcium and parathyroid hormone levels. Giant parathyroid adenoma is diagnosed by imaging and laboratory studies. Management is typically surgical, aiming at complete resection.     Effects of Thermal Radiation and Rotation on Unsteady Hydromagnetic Free Convection Flow past an Impulsively Moving Vertical Plate with Ramped Temperature in a Porous Medium

    The effects of radiation and rotation on unsteady hydromagnetic free convection flow of a viscous incompressible electrically conducting fluid past an impulsively moving infinite vertical plate with ramped temperature in a porous medium are investigated. Exact solution of momentum and energy equations, under Boussinesq approximation, is obtained in closed form by Laplace transform technique. To compare the results obtained in this case with that of isothermal plate, exact solution of the governing equations is also obtained for isothermal plate. The expressions for the primary and secondary skin frictions and Nusselt number are also derived. It is noticed that, for both ramped temperature and isothermal plates, rotation retards fluid flow in the primary flow direction whereas it accelerates fluid flow in the secondary flow direction in the boundary layer region while radiation exerts accelerating influence on the fluid flow in both the primary and secondary flow directions. For ramped temperature plate radiation reduces primary skin friction whereas it tends to increase secondary skin friction. For isothermal plate radiation has tendency to reduce secondary skin friction. Radiation tends to increase fluid temperature for both ramped temperature and isothermal plates. With the increase in time the rate of heat transfer at the plate is reduced for isothermal plate while it is increased for ramped temperature plate

    ‘XYZ’ application as a tool for teaching and learning in institutions of higher learning: an exploratory study

    Teaching and learning in institutions of higher learning has undergone transformation as a result of rapid development in the field of communication and technologies. The emergence of social networking sites has paved the way for the enhancement of teaching and learning approaches. The focus of this study is on ‘XYZ’ application (the actual name is not disclosed due to confidentiality) that was recently launched in Malaysia. Using a mixed research method, the study investigated the perceptions of undergraduate students in a public university to identify the viability of this application in comparison with other applications and to analyze its effectiveness as a tool for teaching and learning. The findings indicate the application has good features that enhance the effectiveness of the teaching and learning process. However, there is concern about the limited compatibility of this application. The paper ends with recommendations on how the application can be improved

    Favorable Changes in Fasting Glucose in a 6-month Self-Monitored Lifestyle Modification Programme Inversely Affects Spexin Levels in Females with Prediabetes

    Spexin (SPX) is a novel peptide thought to have a role in various metabolic regulations. Given its presumed body-weight regulatory functions, we aimed to determine whether lifestyle intervention programs on weight loss and fasting glucose (FG) improvement among people with impaired glucose regulation also alter levels of circulating SPX. A total of 160 Saudi adult males and females with prediabetes were randomly selected from a larger cohort (N = 294) who underwent a 6-month lifestyle modification program to improve their glycemic status. Participants were split into two groups based on differences in glucose levels post-intervention, with the first 50% (improved group) having the most significant reduction in FG. SPX was measured at baseline and after 6 months. Changes in SPX was significant only in the improved group [baseline: median (Q1\u2013Q3) of 164 pg/ml (136\u2013227) vs follow-up: 176 pg/ml (146\u2013285); p < 0.01]. When stratified by sex, the significant increase was observed only in females [159 pg/ml (127\u2013252) vs 182.5 (152,369.1); p < 0.01]. Furthermore, SPX levels showed a significant inverse association with FG (\u3b2 = 120.22, p = 0.003) even after adjustment with age and BMI, again only in females. Circulating SPX levels increase over time in people with prediabetes, particularly women who responded favorably in a 6-month lifestyle intervention program. Whether an unknown mechanism regulating the sexual disparity seen in SPX levels post-intervention exists should be further investigated using a larger sample size

    DEVELOPMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT PLAN (EMP) FOR OIL AND GAS EXPLORATION ALONG THE COASTAL AREAS OF BANGLADESH

    The Coastal and Marine zones of Bangladesh comprise a rich and complex mix of ecosystems and natural resources. Human activities in the area include agriculture, aquaculture, salt production, industrial fishing, port and navigation activities. Hydrocarbon exploration is a new introduction to the existing human activities that impact upon the natural environment. Complexities of human interactions with the environment should be properly understood in developing the environmental management plan (EMP) for sustainable development of the resources. For completing this study three questionnaire surveys were conducted, one among local community (stakeholders), second one among peoples conducting exploration activities (mining engineers, GIS specialists, geologists and related key persons) and another among environmental experts (i.e. environmental scientists, environmental engineers, ecologists, biologists, chemists, forest officers, NGO workers, university teachers and others related academicians). From survey findings it is found that most of the local people have no clear idea about exploration program and its associated impacts but when informed, they feel the need for preparation of an extensive EMP and its proper implementation. However they have expressed their confusion about compensation system concerning the project. About 36% of people are not satisfied with existing damage compensation system. A great controversial thinking was found from their perception. A large no of people (90%) think that the distance of exploration sites of block-5 from the Sundarbans is not sufficient to protect highly sensitive mangrove ecosystem. Several environmental experts are not agreed with the exploration program along coastal blocks due to considering the vulnerability of the Sundarbans, shrimp ghers, other fisheries resources, forest and agricultural plantation, wildlife, biodiversity and other adverse impact on local people as well as possibility of firing accident. However they predict adverse environmental impacts of such projects and delineate the needs for preparation and effective implementation of an all-embracing EMP. They also outline a strategic EMP for exploration and production activities along coastal areas

    Multiorder coherent Raman scattering of a quantum probe field

    We study the multiorder coherent Raman scattering of a quantum probe field in a far-off-resonance medium with a prepared coherence. Under the conditions of negligible dispersion and limited bandwidth, we derive a Bessel-function solution for the sideband field operators. We analytically and numerically calculate various quantum statistical characteristics of the sideband fields. We show that the multiorder coherent Raman process can replicate the statistical properties of a single-mode quantum probe field into a broad comb of generated Raman sidebands. We also study the mixing and modulation of photon statistical properties in the case of two-mode input. We show that the prepared Raman coherence and the medium length can be used as control parameters to switch a sideband field from one type of photon statistics to another type, or from a non-squeezed state to a squeezed state and vice versa.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, to be published in Phys.
