Giant Gravitons - with Strings Attached (III)
We develop techniques to compute the one-loop anomalous dimensions of
operators in the super Yang-Mills theory that are dual to open
strings ending on boundstates of sphere giant gravitons. Our results, which are
applicable to excitations involving an arbitrary number of open strings,
generalize the single string results of hep-th/0701067. The open strings we
consider carry angular momentum on an S embedded in the S of the
AdSS background. The problem of computing the one loop anomalous
dimensions is replaced with the problem of diagonalizing an interacting Cuntz
oscillator Hamiltonian. Our Cuntz oscillator dynamics illustrates how the
Chan-Paton factors for open strings propagating on multiple branes can arise
dynamically.Comment: 66 pages; v2: improved presentatio
Complex Matrix Model and Fermion Phase Space for Bubbling AdS Geometries
We study a relation between droplet configurations in the bubbling AdS
geometries and a complex matrix model that describes the dynamics of a class of
chiral primary operators in dual N=4 super Yang Mills (SYM). We show rigorously
that a singlet holomorphic sector of the complex matrix model is equivalent to
a holomorphic part of two-dimensional free fermions, and establish an exact
correspondence between the singlet holomorphic sector of the complex matrix
model and one-dimensional free fermions. Based on this correspondence, we find
a relation of the singlet holomorphic operators of the complex matrix model to
the Wigner phase space distribution. By using this relation and the AdS/CFT
duality, we give a further evidence that the droplets in the bubbling AdS
geometries are identified with those in the phase space of the one-dimensional
fermions. We also show that the above correspondence actually maps the
operators of N=4 SYM corresponding to the (dual) giant gravitons to the droplet
configurations proposed in the literature.Comment: 27 pages, 6 figures, some clarification, typos corrected, published

Semi-classical Probe Strings on Giant Gravitons Backgrounds
In the first part of this paper we study two symmetries of the LLM
metric, both of which exchange black and white regions. One of them which can
be interpreted as the particle-hole symmetry is the symmetry of the whole
supergravity solution while the second one is just the symmetry of the metric
and changes the sign of the fivefrom flux. In the second part of the paper we
use closed string probes and their semi-classical analysis to compare the two
1/2 BPS deformations of , the smooth LLM geometry which
contains localized giant gravitons and the superstar case which is a solution
with naked singularity corresponding to smeared giants. We discuss the
realization of the symmetry in the semi-classical closed string probes
point of view.Comment: 29 pages, 6 .eps figures; v2: References adde
componentes celulares
Electrified BPS Giants: BPS configurations on Giant Gravitons with Static Electric Field
We consider D3-brane action in the maximally supersymmetric type IIB
plane-wave background. Upon fixing the light-cone gauge, we obtain the
light-cone Hamiltonian which is manifestly supersymmetric. The 1/2 BPS
solutions of this theory (solutions which preserve 16 supercharges) are either
of the form of spherical three branes, the giant gravitons, or zero size point
like branes. We then construct specific classes of 1/4 BPS solutions of this
theory in which static electric field on the brane is turned on. These
solutions are deformations about either of the two 1/2 BPS solutions. In
particular, we study in some detail 1/4 BPS configurations with electric dipole
on the three sphere giant, i.e. BIons on the giant gravitons, which we hence
call BIGGons. We also study BPS configurations corresponding to turning on a
background uniform constant electric field. As a result of this background
electric field the three sphere giant is deformed to squashed sphere, while the
zero size point like branes turn into circular or straight fundamental strings
in the plane-wave background, with their tension equal to the background
electric field.Comment: 32 pages, 1 eps figure; v2: Presentation of derivation of light-cone

Fermions from Half-BPS Supergravity
We discuss collective coordinate quantization of the half-BPS geometries of
Lin, Lunin and Maldacena (hep-th/0409174). The LLM geometries are parameterized
by a single function on a plane. We treat this function as a collective
coordinate. We arrive at the collective coordinate action as well as path
integral measure by considering D3 branes in an arbitrary LLM geometry. The
resulting functional integral is shown, using known methods (hep-th/9309028),
to be the classical limit of a functional integral for free fermions in a
harmonic oscillator. The function gets identified with the classical limit
of the Wigner phase space distribution of the fermion theory which satisfies u
* u = u. The calculation shows how configuration space of supergravity becomes
a phase space (hence noncommutative) in the half-BPS sector. Our method sheds
new light on counting supersymmetric configurations in supergravity.Comment: 28 pages, 2 figures, epsf;(v3) eq. (3.3) clarified and notationally

Determinants Of Blood Lead Levels In An Adult Population From A Mining Area In Brazil
During the last fifty years the Ribeira river valley, Brazil, had been under the influence of the full activity of a huge lead refinery and mining along the riverside. The plant completely stopped all kind of industrial activities at the end of 1995, and part of the worker population and their families still remain living nearby in small communities. The objective of the present study was to assess the determinants of blood lead levels (BLL) in these mining areas, where residual environmental contamination from the past industrial activity still remains. Blood samples of 350 adults aged 15 to 70, residing in areas around the mine and the refinery were collected. A questionnaire was given in order to gather information on food habits, current and former residential places, occupational activities, among other variables. Blood lead concentrations were analysed by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry using Zeeman background correction. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to examine the independent contribution of selected variables in predicting BLL in those subjects. The following variables showed significant association with high BLL: residential area close to the lead refinery, former dwelling at the refinery village, male gender, smoking habits, and consume of fruits from home back yard.107I127130Berglund, M., Pedersen, N.L., Bjorkman, L., Vahter, M., (1999) Environ Res, 80, pp. 222-230Brody, D.J., Pirkle, J.L., Kramer, R.A., Flegal, K.M., Matte, T.D., Gunter, E.W., Paschal, D.C., (1994) JAMA, 27, pp. 277-283Hense, H.W., Filipiak, B., Novak, L., Stoeppler, M., (1992) Int J Epidem, 21Jakubowski, M., Trzcinka-Ochocka, M., Razniewska, G., Christensen, J.M., Starek, A., (1996) Int Arch Occup Environ Health, 68, pp. 193-198Kristal-Boneh, E., Froom, P., Yerushalmi, N., Ashkanazi, R., Pardo, A., Shine, R., Ribak, J., (1998) Am J Ind Med, 34, pp. 512-516Leroyer, A., Hemon, D., Nisse, C., Bazerques, J., Salomez, J.L., Haguenoer, (2001) Sci Total Environ, 267, pp. 87-99Liou, S.H., Wu, T.N., Chiang, H.C., Yang, G.Y., Yang, T., Wu, Y.Q., Lai, J.S., Chang, P.Y., (1996) Sci Total Environ, 180, pp. 211-219Mahaffey, K.R., (1995) Environ Health Perspect, 103, pp. 191-196Muldoon, S.B., Cauley, J.A., Kuller, L.H., Scott, S., Rohay, J., (1994) Am J Epidemiol, 139, pp. 599-608Ooi, P.L., Goh, K.T., Heng, B.H., Sam, C.T., Kong, K.H., Rajan, U., (1991) Rev Environ Health, 9, pp. 2017-2213Paoliello, M.M.B., Gutierrez, P.R., Turini, C.A., Matsuo, T., Mezzaroba, L., Barbosa, D.S., Alvarenga, A.L.P., Lobo, B., (2001) Pan Am J Public Health, 9, pp. 315-319Probst-Hensch, N., Braun-Fahrlaender, C., Bodenmann, A., Ackermann-Liebrich, U., (1993) Soz Praventivmed, 38, pp. 43-50Yang, J.S., Kang, S.K., Park, I.J., Rhee, K.Y., Moon, Y.H., Sohn, D.H., (1996) Int Arch Occup Environ Health, 68, pp. 199-20
Half-BPS Giants, Free Fermions and Microstates of Superstars
We consider 1/2-BPS states in AdS/CFT. Using the matrix model description of
chiral primaries explicit mappings among configurations of fermions, giant
gravitons and the dual-giant gravitons are obtained. These maps lead to a
`duality' between the giant and the dual-giant configurations which is the
reflection of particle-hole duality of the fermion picture. These dualities
give rise to some interesting consequences which we study. We then calculate
the degeneracy of 1/2-BPS states both from the CFT and string theory and show
that they match. The asymptotic degeneracy grows exponentially with the
comformal dimension. We propose that the five-dimensional single charge
`superstar' geometry should carry this density of states. An appropriate
stretched horizon can be placed in this geometry and the entropy predicted by
the CFT and the string theory microstate counting can be reproduced by the
Bekenstein-Hawking formula up to a numerical coefficient. Similar M-theory
examples are also considered.Comment: 21 pages, v2:typos corrected and references adde
Giants On Deformed Backgrounds
We study giant graviton probes in the framework of the three--parameter
deformation of the AdS_5 x S^5 background. We examine both the case when the
brane expands in the deformed part of the geometry and the case when it blows
up into AdS. Performing a detailed analysis of small fluctuations around the
giants, the configurations turn out to be stable. Our results hold even for the
supersymmetric Lunin-Maldacena deformation.Comment: LaTex, 28 pages, uses JHEP3; v2: minor corrections, references added;
