High level of hybridisation in three species of Indian major carps
Thirty individuals of each species of Indian major carps, i.e., Catla catla, Cirrhinus cirrhosus (C. mrigala) and Labeo rohita, obtained from a nursery near Mymensingh, Bangladesh were analysed by means of allozyme electrophoresis. Twenty-one loci were studied. Several loci revealed significant deviation from Hardy-Weinberg expectations caused by deficiency of heterozygotes, indicating Wahlund effects due to problems with species identification. Moreover, bimodal distributions of individual heterozygosity within the three putative species indicated hybridisation. This was confirmed using analysis of individual admixture proportions, as individuals misidentified to species and hybrids between species were observed. Furthermore, factorial correspondence analysis to visualize genetic relationships among individuals revealed three distinct groups containing misclassified individuals, along with some intermediate individuals interpreted as hybrids. Ten per cent of all C. catla and L. rohita had been erroneously identified to species, and 40 per cent of all presumptive C. catla were hybrids between C. catla x C. cirrhosus and C. catla x L. rohita. In the case of C. cirrhosus, 37 per cent of the samples were C. cirrhosus x L. rohita hybrids. Thirty per cent of all presumptive L. rohita turned out to be hybrids between L. rohita x C. catla and L. rohita x C. cirrhosus. The high incidence of hybrids in C. catla might be responsible for slower growth of the fish in aquaculture

So far, yet so close: α-Catenin dimers help migrating cells get together
Epithelial cells in tissues use their actin cytoskeletons to stick together, whereas unattached cells make active plasma membrane protrusions to migrate. In this issue, Wood et al. (2017. J. Cell Biol. https://doi.org/10.1083/jcb.201612006) show that the junction component α-catenin is critical in freely moving cells to promote adhesion and migration
Exogenous Estrogen Boosts Circulating Estradiol Concentrations and Calcium Uptake by Duodenal Tissue in Heat-Stressed Hens
In the hen, heat stress (HS) disrupts shell calcification and reproductive processes, including hormone synthesis and egg production. Two studies were conducted to investigate palliative effects of exogenous estrogen or dietary vitamin D3 on Ca homeostasis and reproductive physiology during HS. Study 1: Hy-Line W36 hens were randomly assigned to thermoneutral (TN) or HS treatments and to 1 of 7 estrogen treatments: zero (control) or one Compudose 200 implant given 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, or 10 d before onset of HS. With no implant, HS reduced plasma estradiol (E2) and total Ca absorbed (CaT) by duodenal cells (P \u3c 0.05). In TN hens with implants, plasma E2 tripled within 24 h (P \u3c 0.05) and remained elevated (P \u3c 0.05) through d 9. In HS hens with implants, plasma E2 rose 6-fold (P \u3c 0.05) to equal TN+E2 concentrations and remained elevated through d 10. In TN and HS hens with implants, the rate of Ca absorption (CaTR) and CaT increased dramatically; the responses were quadratic and essentially identical. Study 2: Hy-Line W36 hens were provided diets formulated either according to NRC requirements (NRC, 1994), or with the addition of 22,000 IU/kg vitamin D3 (+VD hens). A 24-h HS episode was imposed 2 wk after initiation of the dietary regimen. Duodenal samples were collected for Ca absorption assays after the 24-h HS episode. Both CaTR and CaT in +VD hens were approximately 3-fold higher than in hens in the NVD group (P = 0.102). The results lead to the conclusion that exogenous estrogen, high levels of dietary vitamin D, or both, before a HS episode, are efficacious in alleviating at least some of the effects of HS and should be further investigated
Estrogen Receptor-α Populations Change with Age in Commercial Laying Hens
Older hens in production lay larger but fewer eggs than younger birds, and the incidence of soft and broken shells is greater in older hens than younger. These changes are attributable at least in part to changing hormone profiles and diminished ability of the hen to transport calcium at the duodenum. In further exploration of this relationship, a study was conducted with three ages of Hy-Line W-36 birds: prelay pullets (PL; 19 wk, 0% production), peak-production hens (PP; 29 wk, ∼93% production), and late-stage hens (LS; 71 wk, ∼80% production). Hens from the PP and LS groups were palpated for presence of an egg in the shell gland; hens were then euthanized and tissues (kidney, shell gland, hypothalamus) were removed for quantification of estrogen receptor- α (ERα) populations via immunocytochemical and Western blot analyses. Localization of ERα by immunostaining in the shell gland showed differences among age groups; however, no differences were noted in localization of ERα between age groups in the kidney and hypothalamus. In both the kidney and the shell gland there was a decrease in the amount of ERα, as detected by immunoblotting, in the LS hens compared to PL and PP birds (P \u3c 0.05). The results suggest that failure of calcium regulating mechanisms with age may be mediated at least in part through the reduced populations of estrogen receptors in certain critical tissues
Link between the diversity, heterogeneity and kinetic properties of amorphous ice structures
Based on neutron wide-angle diffraction and small-angle neutron scattering
experiments, we show that there is a correlation between the preparational
conditions of amorphous ice structures, their microscopic structural
properties, the extent of heterogeneities on a mesoscopic spatial scale and the
transformation kinetics. There are only two modifications that can be
identified as homogeneous disordered structures, namely the very high-density
vHDA and the low-density amorphous LDA ice. Structures showing an intermediate
static structure factor with respect to vHDA and LDA are heterogeneous phases.
This holds independently from their preparation procedure, i.e. either obtained
by pressure amorphisation of ice I_h or by heating of vHDA. The degree of
heterogeneity can be progressively suppressed when higher pressures and
temperatures are applied for the sample preparation. In accordance with the
suppressed heterogeneity the maximum of the static structure factor displays a
pronounced narrowing of the first strong peak, shifting towards higher
Q-numbers. Moreover, the less heterogeneous the obtained structures are the
slower is the transformation kinetics from the high--density modifications into
LDA. The well known high-density amorphous structure HDA does not constitute
any particular state of the amorphous water network. It is formed due to the
preparational procedure working in liquid nitrogen as thermal bath, i.e. at
about 77 K
Epidemiology and transmission characteristics of early COVID-19 cases, 20 January–19 March 2020, in Bavaria, Germany
Severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) led to a significant disease burden and disruptions in health systems. We describe the epidemiology and transmission characteristics of early coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases in Bavaria, Germany. Cases were reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR)-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infections, reported from 20 January−19 March 2020. The incubation period was estimated using travel history and date of symptom onset. To estimate the serial interval, we identified pairs of index and secondary cases. By 19 March, 3546 cases were reported. A large proportion was exposed abroad (38%), causing further local transmission. Median incubation period of 256 cases with exposure abroad was 3.8 days (95%CI: 3.5–4.2). For 95% of infected individuals, symptom onset occurred within 10.3 days (95%CI: 9.1–11.8) after exposure. The median serial interval, using 53 pairs, was 3.5 days (95%CI: 3.0–4.2; mean: 3.9, s.d.: 2.2). Travellers returning to Germany had an important influence on the spread of SARS-CoV-2 infections in Bavaria in early 2020. Especially in times of low incidence, public health agencies should identify holiday destinations, and areas with ongoing local transmission, to monitor potential importation of SARS-CoV-2 infections. Travellers returning from areas with ongoing community transmission should be advised to quarantine to prevent re-introductions of COVID-19.Peer Reviewe
Non-Arrhenius Behavior of Secondary Relaxation in Supercooled Liquids
Dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (1 Hz - 20 GHz) has been performed on
supercooled glass-formers from the temperature of glass transition (T_g) up to
that of melting. Precise measurements particularly in the frequencies of
MHz-order have revealed that the temperature dependences of secondary
beta-relaxation times deviate from the Arrhenius relation in well above T_g.
Consequently, our results indicate that the beta-process merges into the
primary alpha-mode around the melting temperature, and not at the dynamical
transition point T which is approximately equal to 1.2 T_g.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, revtex
