    A model for deformable roll coating with negative gaps and incompressible compliant layers

    A soft elastohydrodynamic lubrication model is formulated for deformable roll coating involving two contra-rotating rolls, one rigid and the other covered with a compliant layer. Included is a finite-strip model (FSM) for the deformation of the layer and a lubrication model with suitable boundary conditions for the motion of the fluid. The scope of the analysis is restricted to Newtonian fluids, linear elasticity/viscoelasticity and equal roll speeds, with application to the industrially relevant highly loaded or 'negative gap' regime. Predictions are presented for coated film thickness, interroll thickness, meniscus location, pressure and layer deformation as the control parameters - load (gap), elasticity, layer thickness and capillary number, Ca - are varied. There are four main results: \ud (i) Hookean spring models are shown to be unable to model effectively the deformation of a compliant layer when Poisson's ratio nu --> 0.5. In particular, they fall to predict the swelling of the layer at the edge of the contact region which increases as v - 0.5; they also fail to locate accurately the position of the meniscus, X-M, and to identify the presence, close to the meniscus, of a 'nib' (constriction in gap thickness) and associated magnification of the sub-ambient pressure loop. (ii) Scaling arguments suggest that layer thickness and elasticity may have similar effects on the field variables. It is shown that for positive gaps this is true, whereas for negative gaps they have similar effects on the pressure profile and flow rate yet quite different effects on layer swelling (deformation at the edge of the contact region) and different effects on X-M. (iii) For negative gaps and Ca similar to O(1), the effect of varying either viscosity or speed and hence Ca is to significantly alter both the coating thickness and X-M. This is contrary to the case of fixed-gap rigid roll coating. (iv) Comparison between theoretical predictions and experimental data shows quantitive agreement in the case of X-M and qualitive agreement for flow rate. It is shown that this difference in the latter case may be due to viscoelastic effects in the compliant layer

The broad lines from the type 1 nucleus can be scattered and be seen in the polarized flux spectrum, provided the geometry is correct. Whether the mechanism is electron or dust scattering has been a question of some debate. Since dust would normally have a low scattering efficiency in the infrared, near-IR spectropolarimetry should help in determing the nature of the scatterers. To this end we present the first near-IR spectropolarimetry of NGC 1068 a "Seyfert 2" galaxy in which polarized broad lines have been observed at optical wavelengths

    Substrate induction and glucose repression of maltose utilization by Streptomyces coelicolor A3(2) is controlled by malR, a member of the lacI-galR family of regulatory genes

    malR of Strepomyces coelicolor A3(2) encodes a homologue of the Lacl/Galr family of repressor proteins, and is divergently transcribed from the malEFG gene cluster, which encodes components of an ATP-dependent transport system that is required for maltose utilization. Transcription of malE was induced by maltose and repressed by glucose. Disruption or deletion of malR resulted in constitutive, glucose-insensitive malE transcription at a level markedly above that observed in the parental malR+ strain, and overproduction of MalR prevented growth on maltose as carbon source. Consequently, MalR plays a crucial role in both substrate induction and glucose repression of maltose utilization. MalR is expressed from a single promoter with transcription initiating at the first G of the predicted GTG translataion start codon

    Radio Source Heating in the ICM: The Example of Cygnus A

    One of the most promising solutions for the cooling flow problem involves energy injection from the central AGN. However it is still not clear how collimated jets can heat the ICM at large scale, and very little is known concerning the effect of radio lobe expansion as they enter into pressure equilibrium with the surrounding cluster gas. Cygnus A is one of the best examples of a nearby powerful radio galaxy for which the synchrotron emitting plasma and thermal emitting intra-cluster medium can be mapped in fine detail, and previous observations have inferred possible shock structure at the location of the cocoon. We use new XMM-Newton observations of Cygnus A, in combination with deep Chandra observations, to measure the temperature of the intra-cluster medium around the expanding radio cavities. We investigate how inflation of the cavities may relate to shock heating of the intra-cluster gas, and whether such a mechanism is sufficient to provide enough energy to offset cooling to the extent observed.Comment: To appear in the Proceedings of "Heating vs. Cooling in Galaxies and Clusters of Galaxies", August 2006, Garching (Germany), Eds.     Applying Knowledge of Species-Typical Scavenging Behavior to the Search and Recovery of Mammalian Skeletal Remains.

    Forensic investigations involving animal scavenging of human remains require a physical search of the scene and surrounding areas. However, there is currently no standard procedure in the U.K. for physical searches of scavenged human remains. The Winthrop and grid search methods used by police specialist searchers for scavenged remains were examined through the use of mock red fox (Vulpes vulpes) scatter scenes. Forty-two police specialist searchers from two different regions within the U.K. were divided between those briefed and not briefed with fox-typical scavenging information. Briefing searchers with scavenging information significantly affected the recovery of scattered bones (χ(2) = 11.45, df = 1, p = 0.001). Searchers briefed with scavenging information were 2.05 times more likely to recover bones. Adaptions to search methods used by searchers were evident on a regional level, such that searchers more accustom to a peri-urban to rural region recovered a higher percentage of scattered bones (58.33%, n = 84)

    Zinc uptake and phyto-toxicity: Comparing intensity- and capacity-based drivers

    © 2019 Elsevier B.V. Metal bioavailability and phytotoxicity may be exaggerated when derived from studies based on amending soils with soluble metal salts. It is therefore important to evaluate soil tests for their consistency in estimating plant uptake and phytotoxicity in both field-contaminated and freshly-spiked soils. This study aimed to compare the effects of zinc (Zn) on plant growth in soils (i) recently spiked with soluble Zn and (ii) historically amended with biosolids. The objective was to reconcile methods for determining bioavailability in both cases by testing a range of ‘quantity-based’ and ‘intensity-based’ assays. Soils with a range of Zn concentrations, from an arable farm used for biosolids disposal for over a century, were further amended with Zn added in solution, and were incubated for one month prior to planting with barley seeds in a glasshouse pot trial. The majority (67–90%) of the added Zn remained isotopically exchangeable after 60 days. Zinc in the solution phase of a soil suspension was present mainly as free Zn2+ ions. Cadmium bioaccumulation factors were inversely proportional to Zn concentration in the soil solution confirming that greater Zn availability suppressed Cd uptake by plants. Measurements of soil Zn ‘quantities’ (total, EDTA-extractable and isotopically exchangeable) and ‘intensity’ (solution concentration and free ion activity) were correlated with Zn uptake and toxicity by barley plants. Correlations using Zn intensity were much stronger than those using quantity-based measurements. The free Zn2+ ion activity appears to be a consistent driver for plant uptake and phytotoxic response for both metal-spiked soils and historically contaminated soils. Surprisingly, soil Zn accumulation of up to 100 times the current regulations for normal arable land only produced a mild toxic response suggesting that constituents in biosolids (e.g. organic matter and phosphates) strongly restrict metal bioavailability

    Study of the three-dimensional shape and dynamics of coronal loops observed by Hinode/EIS

    We study plasma flows along selected coronal loops in NOAA Active Region 10926, observed on 3 December 2006 with Hinode's EUV Imaging Spectrograph (EIS). From the shape of the loops traced on intensity images and the Doppler shifts measured along their length we compute their three-dimensional (3D) shape and plasma flow velocity using a simple geometrical model. This calculation was performed for loops visible in the Fe VIII 185 Ang., Fe X 184 Ang., Fe XII 195 Ang., Fe XIII 202 Ang., and Fe XV 284 Ang. spectral lines. In most cases the flow is unidirectional from one footpoint to the other but there are also cases of draining motions from the top of the loops to their footpoints. Our results indicate that the same loop may show different flow patterns when observed in different spectral lines, suggesting a dynamically complex rather than a monolithic structure. We have also carried out magnetic extrapolations in the linear force-free field approximation using SOHO/MDI magnetograms, aiming toward a first-order identification of extrapolated magnetic field lines corresponding to the reconstructed loops. In all cases, the best-fit extrapolated lines exhibit left-handed twist (alpha < 0), in agreement with the dominant twist of the region.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figure

    An Investigation of Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes) and Eurasian Badger (Meles meles) Scavenging, Scattering, and Removal of Deer Remains: Forensic Implications and Applications

    Within northwest Europe, especially the United Kingdom, the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) and the Eurasian Badger (Meles meles) are the largest wild scavengers capable of modifying a set of remains through scavenging. Knowledge of region-specific and species-typical scavenging behaviors of scavengers within the crime scene area and surroundings can aid in more efficient and accurate interpretations. The scavenging behaviors of captive and wild foxes and badgers were recorded and compared through actualistic methods and direct observation. The scavenging by wild foxes and badgers of surface-deposited baits and whole deer (Cervus nippon; Capreolus capreolus) in a woodland was observed and analyzed. Wild foxes were found to scavenge deer more frequently than badgers. The scavenging of deer remains by foxes was also compared with forensic cases. The scavenging pattern and recovery distances of deer and human remains scavenged by foxes were similar but were potentially affected by the condition and deposition of a body, and the presence of clothing

    Event-related potential correlates of spatiotemporal regularities in vision

    Spatiotemporal regularities in stimulus structure have been shown to influence visual target detection and discrimination. Here we investigate whether the influence of spatiotemporal regularity is associated with the modulation of early components (P1/N1) in Event-Related Potentials (ERP). Stimuli consisted of five horizontal bars (predictors) appearing successively towards the fovea followed by a target bar at fixation, and participants performed a key-press on target detection. Results showed that compared to the condition where five predictors were presented in a temporally regular but spatially randomised order, target detection-times were faster and contralateral N1 peak latencies were shorter when the predictors and the target were presented with spatial and temporal regularity. Both measures were most prolonged when only the target was presented. In this latter condition, an additional latency prolongation was observed for the P1 peak compared to the conditions where the target was preceded by the predictors. The latency shifts associated with early ERP components provides additional support for involvement of early visual processing stages in the coding of spatiotemporal regularities in humans

    Athlete and coach perceptions of technology needs for evaluating running performance

    Athletes and their support team utilise technology to measure and evaluate technique and athletic performance. Existing techniques for motion and propulsion measurement and analysis include a combination of indirect methods (high-speed video) and direct methods (force plates and pressure systems). These methods are predominantly limited to controlled laboratory environments (in a small area relative to the competition environment), require expert advice and support, and can take significant time to evaluate the data. Consequently, the more advanced measurement techniques are considered to be restricted to specific coaching sessions, or periods in the year leading up to competition, when the time and expertise of further support staff are available. The more widely used, and simple, devices for monitoring 'performance' during running include stopwatches, GPS tracking and accelerometer-based systems to count strides. These provide useful information on running duration, distance and velocity but lack detailed information on many key aspects of running technique. In order to begin the process of development of more innovative technologies for routine use by athletes and coaches, a study was required to improve the understanding of athletes' and coaches' perception of their requirements from measurement technology. This study outlines a systematic approach to elicit and evaluate their perceptions, and presents the findings from interviews and a questionnaire. The qualitative data are presented as a hierarchical graphical plot (structured relationship model) showing six general dimensions (technique, footwear and surface, environment, performance, injury and cardiovascular) and shows the development of these general dimensions from the interviewee quotations. The questionnaire quantitative data enhances the study by further ranking characteristics that arise from the interviews. A contrast is shown between short and longer distance runner groups, as might be expected. The current technology available to elite runners is briefly reviewed in relation to the 22 characteristics identified as important to measure. The conclusions highlight the need for newer technologies to measure aspects of running style and performance in a portable and integrated manner, with suggestions as to size and weight likely to be acceptable to users for emerging devices. © 2010 International Sports Engineering Association
