    A modification of the convective constraint release mechanism in the molecular stress function model giving enhanced vortex growth

    The molecular stress function model with convective constraint release (MSF with CCR) constitutive model [J. Rheol. 45 (2001), 1387] is capable of fitting all viscometric data for IUPAC LDPE, with only two adjustable parameters (with difference found only on reported ¿steady-state¿ elongational viscosities). The full MSF with CCR model is implemented in a backwards particle-tracking implementation, using an adaptive method for the computation of relative stretch that reduces simulation time many-fold, with insignificant loss of accuracy. The model is shown to give improved results over earlier versions of the MSF (without CCR) when compared to well-known experimental data from White and Kondo [J. non-Newt. Fluid Mech., 3 (1977), 41]; but still to under-predict contraction flow opening angles. The discrepancy is traced to the interaction between the rotational dissipative function and the large stretch levels caused by the contraction flow. A modified combination of dissipative functions in the constraint release mechanism is proposed, which aims to reduce this interaction to allow greater strain hardening in a mixed flow. The modified constraint release mechanism is shown to fit viscometric rheological data equally well, but to give opening angles in the complex contraction flow that are much closer to the experimental data from White and Kondo. It is shown (we believe for the first time) that a constitutive model demonstrates an accurate fit to all planar elongational, uniaxial elongational and shear viscometric data, with a simultaneous agreement with this well-known experimental opening angle data. The sensitivity of results to inaccuracies caused by representing the components of the deformation gradient tensor to finite precision is examined; results are found to be insensitive to even large reductions in the precision used for the representation of components. It is shown that two models that give identical response in elongational flow, and a very similar fit to available shear data, give significantly different results in flows containing a mix of deformation modes. The implication for constitutive models is that evaluation against mixed deformation mode flow data is desirable in addition to evaluation against viscometric measurements

    Submergence of the Sidebands in the Photon-assisted Tunneling through a Quantum Dot Weakly Coupled to Luttinger Liquid Leads

    We study theoretically the photon-assisted tunneling through a quantum dot weakly coupled to Luttinger liquids (LL) leads, and find that the zero bias dc conductance is strongly affected by the interactions in the LL leads. In comparison with the system with Fermi liquid (FL) leads, the sideband peaks of the dc conductance become blurring for 1/2<g<1, and finally merge into the central peak for g<1/2, (g is the interaction parameter in the LL leads). The sidebands are suppressed for LL leads with Coulomb interactions strong enough, and the conductance always appears as a single peak for any strength and frequency of the external time-dependent field. Furthermore, the quenching effect of the central peak for the FL case does not exist for g<1/2.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure

    Thermography as non invasive functional imaging for monitoring seedling growth

    We demonstrate the value of thermal imaging for monitoring growth of seedling organs. An automated procedure is introduced to perform the segmentation of the organs of the seedlings from the thermal contrasts in the images. Results of the automated procedure were assessed visually by expert operators in a separate procedure. This constitutes a new application of thermal imaging as a non invasive imaging providing functional information on the physiology of the seedlings

    Deconstructing sarcomeric structure-function relations in titin-BioID knock-in mice

    Proximity proteomics has greatly advanced the analysis of native protein complexes and subcellular structures in culture, but has not been amenable to study development and disease in vivo. Here, we have generated a knock-in mouse with the biotin ligase (BioID) inserted at titin's Z-disc region to identify protein networks that connect the sarcomere to signal transduction and metabolism. Our census of the sarcomeric proteome from neonatal to adult heart and quadriceps reveals how perinatal signaling, protein homeostasis and the shift to adult energy metabolism shape the properties of striated muscle cells. Mapping biotinylation sites to sarcomere structures refines our understanding of myofilament dynamics and supports the hypothesis that myosin filaments penetrate Z-discs to dampen contraction. Extending this proof of concept study to BioID fusion proteins generated with Crispr/CAS9 in animal models recapitulating human pathology will facilitate the future analysis of molecular machines and signaling hubs in physiological, pharmacological, and disease context

    Probing Heavy Higgs Boson Models with a TeV Linear Collider

    The last years have seen a great development in our understanding of particle physics at the weak scale. Precision electroweak observables have played a key role in this process and their values are consistent, within the Standard Model interpretation, with a light Higgs boson with mass lower than about 200 GeV. If new physics were responsible for the mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking, there would, quite generally, be modifications to this prediction induced by the non-standard contributions to the precision electroweak observables. In this article, we analyze the experimental signatures of a heavy Higgs boson at linear colliders. We show that a linear collider, with center of mass energy \sqrt{s} <= 1 TeV, would be very useful to probe the basic ingredients of well motivated heavy Higgs boson models: a relatively heavy SM-like Higgs, together with either extra scalar or fermionic degrees of freedom, or with the mixing of the third generation quarks with non-standard heavy quark modes.Comment: 21 page

    Charge Transport Through Open, Driven Two-Level Systems with Dissipation

    We derive a Floquet-like formalism to calculate the stationary average current through an AC driven double quantum dot in presence of dissipation. The method allows us to take into account arbitrary coupling strengths both of a time-dependent field and a bosonic environment.     Case Report: Case Series of Children With Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome Following SARS-CoV-2 Infection in Switzerland.

    Since the beginning of the severe SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, an increasing number of countries reported cases of a systemic hyperinflammatory condition defined as multi-system inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C). The clinical features of MIS-C can be an overlap of Kawasaki Disease (KD), Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS), Macrophage Activation Syndrome (MAS), or have often an acute abdominal presentation. Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) is recommended as first line therapy in KD. Recent evidence suggests intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIG) resistance in some cases of SARS-CoV-2 related MIS-C, thereby questioning the benefit of immunomodulators such as IL-1 or IL-6 blocking agents. We report on a cohort of 6 Swiss children with SARS-CoV2 related MIS-C presenting with clinical features compatible with Incomplete KD and Toxic Shock Syndrome associated to a cytokine storm. Serum cytokine profile investigations showed increased IL1RA levels (8 to 22-fold) in 5 of the 6 patients (one patient had not been tested), whereas, IL-6 serum levels were increased only in the 3 patients of the 6 who were tested. With exception of one patient who had only benefited by Anakinra, all patients received at least one dose of IVIG. One patient has only received Anakinra with favorable evolution, and three patients had also a steroid treatment. In addition to all this anti-inflammatory medication two patients have also received one dose of anti-IL6. In conclusion, our case series reports on clinical and laboratory findings of most of Swiss cases with MIS-C and suggests the use of Anakinra as an alternative to steroids in these children, most of whom presented with high IL-1RA levels
