    Enabling participation of Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) and seldom-heard communities in health research: A case study from the SCAMP adolescent cohort study

    Our inquiry investigated the barriers to, and facilitators for, the involvement of Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) and ‘seldom-heard’ communities, in a study researching the impact of mobile phone and wireless device usage on adolescents’ cognition, behaviour and mental health. The aim was to co-produce solutions to increase participation, and we used focus groups, telephone interviews, a community event and a public and patient involvement (PPI) café to conduct the inquiry. Five themes emerged from the data: two enablers – the value and benefits of research; and three barriers – concerns about research and about communication, and practical constraints. A central cross-cutting theme, the concept of trust, was evident from the data, and extended across all themes, including across the solutions to nonparticipation. When the data collection and analysis were completed, we ran a symposium for researchers and members of the public to share our findings and to co-produce solutions. The symposium generated ideas about improving participation, including tailoring participant information, engaging with local advocates and involving people in research design and delivery

    On the Strong Coupling Limit of the Faddeev-Hopf Model

    The variational calculus for the Faddeev-Hopf model on a general Riemannian domain, with general Kaehler target space, is studied in the strong coupling limit. In this limit, the model has key similarities with pure Yang-Mills theory, namely conformal invariance in dimension 4 and an infinite dimensional symmetry group. The first and second variation formulae are calculated and several examples of stable solutions are obtained. In particular, it is proved that all immersive solutions are stable. Topological lower energy bounds are found in dimensions 2 and 4. An explicit description of the spectral behaviour of the Hopf map S^3 -> S^2 is given, and a conjecture of Ward concerning the stability of this map in the full Faddeev-Hopf model is proved.Comment: 21 pages, 0 figure

    Symmetry Properties on Magnetization in the Hubbard Model at Finite Temperatures

    By making use of some symmetry properties of the relevant Hamiltonian, two fundamental relations between the ferromagnetic magnetization and a spin correlation function are derived for the d(=1,2,3)d (=1,2,3)-dimensional Hubbard model at finite temperatures. These can be viewed as a kind of Ward-Takahashi identities. The properties of the magnetization as a function of the applied field are discussed. The results thus obtained hold true for both repulsive and attractive on-site Coulomb interactions, and for arbitrary electron fillings.Comment: Latex file, no figur

    New Approach to GUTs

    We introduce a new string-inspired approach to the subject of grand unification which allows the GUT scale to be small, \lesssim 200 TeV, so that it is within the reach of {\em conceivable} laboratory accelerated colliding beam devices. The key ingredient is a novel use of the heterotic string symmetry group physics ideas to render baryon number violating effects small enough to have escaped detection to date. This part of the approach involves new unknown parameters to be tested experimentally.     We studied the serum levels of IL-2, IFN-g and TNF in different clinical forms of Chagas' disease and in patients clinically compensated and decompensated. Cytokines measured in 91 patients with the chronic form of the disease did not differ from those of 13 normal individuals, suggesting the absence of activation of the TH1 pattern of lymphocyte response. There were no statistical differences among the 17 patients in the indeterminate form of the disease, the patients presenting either early (n = 4) or well-developed signs of cardiomyopathy (n = 62), the digestive (n = 4) or the mixed (n = 4) forms of the disease. Serum TNF was undetectable and IFN-g levels did not differ between clinical forms and severities of Chagas' disease. However, we found IL-2 higher levels in the 25 non-controlled patients than in the 66 controlled individuals (p < 0,001). We suggest that IL-2 dosage may be useful as an indicator of the need for more aggressive procedures.Estudamos os níveis séricos da IL-2, IFN-g e do TNF-a de portadores da doença de Chagas em suas diferentes formas clínicas, compensados e descompensados. As citocinas medidas nos 91 pacientes com a forma crônica da doença não diferiram dos níveis de 13 indivíduos controle. Não houve diferença estatística entre os 17 portadores da forma indeterminada da doença e os portadores de cardiopatia insipiente (n = 4), de cardiopatia bem estabelecida (n = 62), da forma digestiva (n = 4) ou da forma mista (n = 4) da doença. Os níveis séricos de TNF foram indetectáveis e IFN-g não diferiu nas diferentes formas clínicas ou com a severidade da doença. No entanto, encontramos níveis mais elevados de IL-2 nos 25 pacientes não-contrololados do que nos 66 pacientes bem compensados (p < 0,001). Sugerimos que a dosagem de IL-2 possa servir como indicadora da necessidade de terapêuticas mais agressivas nestes pacientes.28528

A pest risk assessment scheme, adapted from the EPPO (European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organisation) scheme, was developed to assess the risks posed to UK species, habitats and ecosystems by non-native taxa. 2. The scheme provides a structured framework for evaluating the potential for non-native organisms, whether intentional or unintentional introductions, to enter, establish, spread and cause significant impacts in all or part of the UK. Specialist modules permit the relative importance of entry pathways, the vulnerability of receptors and the consequences of policies to be assessed and appropriate risk management options to be selected. Spreadsheets for summarising the level of risk and uncertainty, invasive attributes and economic impact were created. In addition, new methods for quantifying economic impact and summarising risk and uncertainty were explored. 3. Although designed for the UK, the scheme can readily be applied elsewhere
