    Throughout the history of literary criticism the relationship between humor and irony has been a recurrent topic of interest, rooted as much in classical works tike Aristotle''s Art of rhetoric or Cicero''s De oratore as in the more recent contributions of scholars such as George Meredith 1956 (1877) and Henri Bergson 1956 (1900). Moreover throughout the twentieth century it was analyzed from a variety of literary and pragmatic perspectives. The book edited by Ruiz Gurillo and Alvarado Ortega sits therefore within a rich and longstanding tradition, while supplying substantial work that derives from the most influential areas of current linguistic research. Based on the investigations of irony and humor being made by the GRIALE group, it offers the reader interesting and updated contributions to trends of current research..

    Irony and Parody in a Spanish Translation of Fowles' The French Lieutenant's Woman: A Relevance-Theoretical Approach

    This paper seeks to explore the translation of irony and parody. The theoretical framework followed will be relevance-theory, which has highlighted that the expression of a certain attitude may be common to these two figures. The work under analysis will be a Spanish rendering of Fowles' The French Lieutenant's Woman, which criticism has regarded as a parody of nineteenth-century Victorian fiction. It will be assumed that for readers to be able to cope with the meaning of parody and irony, they will have to go beyond the propositional content expressed in the utterances in which these resources are found. Furthermore, their translation will necessarily require strategies that go beyond the "literal" level of the words through which irony and parody are expressed. Our contention is that the proposals put forward by relevance theory may be useful in this respect, since they stress the importance of the inferential recognition of the speaker's communicative intention. Both such recognition and its reflection in the target text, in such a way that it requires no extra processing effort from the readership are the main aspects to be faced by the translator

    Dynamic stability of long axisymmetric liquid bridges

    This paper deals with the non-linear forced oscillations of axisymmetric long liquid bridges between equal disks. The dynamics of the liquid bridge has been analyzed by using a self-similar, one-dimensional model already used in similar problems. The influence of the dynamics on the static stability limits, as well as the main characteristics of the non-linear behaviour of long liquid bridges, have been studied with in the range of validity of the mathematical model used here

    A single-point mutation in FGFR2 affects cell cycle and Tgfβ signalling in osteoblasts

    AbstractFgf and Tgfβ are key regulators of bone development. It is not known, however, whether there is a relationship between defective Fgf signalling, resulting in a premature cranial suture fusion, and Tgfβ signalling. We used mouse calvaria osteoblasts carrying a mutation (hFGFR2-C278F) associated with Crouzon and Pfeiffer syndromes to investigate effects of this mutation on cell growth and possible mechanisms underlying it. Mutated osteoblasts displayed reduced S-phase, increased apoptosis and increased differentiation. As Tgfβ signalling appeared to be required in an autocrine/paracrine manner for osteoblast proliferation, we tested the hypothesis that reduced growth might be due, at least in part, to an altered balance between FGF and Tgfβ signalling. Tgfβ expression was indeed decreased in mutated osteoblasts, as compared to osteoblasts carrying the wild type hFGFR2. Treatment with Tgfβ, however, neither increased proliferation in mutated osteoblasts, unlike in controls, nor rescued proliferation in control osteoblasts treated with an Erk1/2 inhibitor. Significantly, Erk2, that is important for proliferation, was reduced relatively to Erk1 in mutated cells. Altogether this study suggests that the hFGFR2-C278F mutation affects the osteoblast ability to respond to Tgfβ stimulation via the Erk pathway and that the overall effect of the mutation is a loss of function

    This research examines the relationships between affective and cognitive antecedents and consequences of satisfaction under a market heterogeneity approach. It includes co-creation of preparatory activities. The sample consisted of 276 museum visitors in London. Two analysis have been conducted: structural equation model and latent class path analysis. The paper contributes to the development of a theoretical framework for further understanding of service experience in which co-creation plays an important role. Two segments were identified: 1) emotional (with lower degree of co-creation, equally distributed by age and nationality); 2) rational (higher degree of co-creation, younger and domestic visitors). Our research shows significant differences between the two segments regarding variables such as satisfaction, loyalty, service experience, emotion, positive disconfirmation and willingness to pay more

    Evaluación de la eficacia anti-arrugas de formulaciones cosméticas con un péptido anti-envejecimiento (Argirelina®)

    The purpose of this research was to evaluate, by means of in vivo studies, the efficacy of new cosmetic active ingredients which effect of botox, called Argireline®), so that width and depth of wrinkles could be established. For this, it is prepared two formulations: an emulsion with an external aqueous phase for normal to dry skin, and a gel for oily skin. We likewise study the water content of the skin after the application of both formulas, as this must be one of the priority functions of facial treatments in general, as well as the level of satisfaction from the subjective point of view, fundamental for patients and their continuation of the treatment.After the designed tests, it is possible to verify that there is a remarkable diminution of the wrinkles size tested in each patient during the month of treatment. Besides, it is possible to review how the moisturizing capacity has been increased in all cases.At the end of the visual test, all the volunteers experienced a reduction in the depth of wrinkles, and from the subjective point of view, the appearance and elasticity of the skin were improved. Finally it is possible to conclude that Argireline® (acetyl hexapeptide-8 ) shows a great antiaging capacity in all the cases that have been studied and the tried compounds have increased moisturizing power.El propósito de esta investigación fue evaluar, mediante estudios in vivo, se podrían establecer la eficacia de nuevos ingredientes activos cosméticos que efecto del botox, llamado Argirelina®), de manera que la anchura y la profundidad de las arrugas. Para esto, se preparó dos formulaciones: una emulsión con una fase acuosa externa para piel normal a seca, y un gel para la piel grasa. Del mismo modo se estudia el contenido de agua de la piel después de la aplicación de ambas fórmulas, ya que esta debe ser una de las funciones prioritarias de tratamientos faciales en general, así como el nivel de satisfacción desde el punto de vista subjetivo, tanto para el enfermo y su continuación del tratamiento.Después de las pruebas diseñadas, es posible verificar que hay una notable disminución del tamaño de las arrugas a prueba en cada paciente durante el mes de tratamiento. Además, es posible revisar la forma en la capacidad de hidratación se ha incrementado en todos los casos.Al final de la prueba visual, todos los voluntarios experimentaron una reducción en la profundidad de las arrugas, y desde el punto de vista subjetivo, el aspecto y la elasticidad de la piel se han mejorado. Por último, es posible concluir que Argirelina® (hexapéptido acetil-8) muestra una gran capacidad antienvejecimiento en todos los casos que han sido estudiados y los compuestos probados se han incrementado poder hidratante

Due to this fact, the customer orientation of front-line employees, primarily in services industry, plays a crucial role in getting positives/negatives results with regards to customer satisfaction. Customer orientation of service employees (COSE) is a key concept within marketing literature.     The Proteome of Biologically Active Membrane Vesicles from Piscirickettsia salmonis LF-89 Type Strain Identifies Plasmid-Encoded Putative Toxins

    Indexación: Scopus.Piscirickettsia salmonis is the predominant bacterial pathogen affecting the Chilean salmonid industry. This bacterium is the etiological agent of piscirickettsiosis, a significant fish disease. Membrane vesicles (MVs) released by P. salmonis deliver several virulence factors to host cells. To improve on existing knowledge for the pathogenicity-associated functions of P. salmonis MVs, we studied the proteome of purified MVs from the P. salmonis LF-89 type strain using multidimensional protein identification technology. Initially, the cytotoxicity of different MV concentration purified from P. salmonis LF-89 was confirmed in an in vivo adult zebrafish infection model. The cumulative mortality of zebrafish injected with MVs showed a dose-dependent pattern. Analyses identified 452 proteins of different subcellular origins; most of them were associated with the cytoplasmic compartment and were mainly related to key functions for pathogen survival. Interestingly, previously unidentified putative virulence-related proteins were identified in P. salmonis MVs, such as outer membrane porin F and hemolysin. Additionally, five amino acid sequences corresponding to the Bordetella pertussis toxin subunit 1 and two amino acid sequences corresponding to the heat-labile enterotoxin alpha chain of Escherichia coli were located in the P. salmonis MV proteome. Curiously, these putative toxins were located in a plasmid region of P. salmonis LF-89.     Quo vadis high-resolution continuum source atomic/molecular absorption spectrometry?

    After more than a decade since its commercial introduction, high-resolution continuum source atomic/molecular absorption spectrometry may be facing a mid-life crisis. Certainly, it is no longer a novel technique full of unknown potential, so it would already be time to establish the fields for which it is most suitable. This is, however, not so simple for a number of reasons. In the first place, more than a technique what we are discussing herein is a type of instrumentation with the potential to use two different techniques (atomic or molecular absorption), making it somewhat unique. Furthermore, the two techniques have not been explored equally, and more research on the mechanisms of formation of diatomic molecules is clearly needed. In the second place, new possibilities have recently appeared in the literature that need to be weighed as well. And there is the still unfulfilled, but nowadays more technically feasible than ever, promise to significantly increase the multi-elemental capabilities. This review critically examines the main research areas currently explored (namely, (i) direct analysis of solids and complex liquid materials, and (ii) determination of non-metals at trace levels via monitoring of molecular species) as well as the new venues (specifically, (i) isotopic analysis via monitoring of molecular species, and (ii) selective detection, quantification and sizing of nanoparticles) while also considering new instrumental developments, in an attempt to properly place high-resolution continuum source atomic/molecular absorption spectrometry in the field of trace element and isotopic analysis
