    Many of the veterinary colleges around the country have introduced recent changes in their curricula, designed to improve the quality of their training or to increase the number of students they are able to accept and graduate. One college, Texas A & M, has gone to a trimester system to provide year around training and shorten the period required for graduation. Another, Michigan State, accepts two classes per year and plans to increase the number of students it graduates in this fashion. Several others have gone to a program of summer clinics for a portion of the vacation period between the junior and senior year in order to provide more organized training in the clinical disciplines

Modification of this amine has a profound effect on the yield and selectivity of the reaction.     Oscillatory entrainment to our early social or physical environment and the emergence of volitional control

    An individual’s early interactions with their environment are thought to be largely passive; through the early years, the capacity for volitional control develops. Here, we consider: how is the emergence of volitional control characterised by changes in the entrainment observed between internal activity (behaviour, physiology and brain activity) and the sights and sounds in our everyday environment (physical and social)? We differentiate between contingent responsiveness (entrainment driven by evoked responses to external events) and oscillatory entrainment (driven by internal oscillators becoming temporally aligned with external oscillators). We conclude that ample evidence suggests that children show behavioural, physiological and neural entrainment to their physical and social environment, irrespective of volitional attention control; however, evidence for oscillatory entrainment beyond contingent responsiveness is currently lacking. Evidence for how oscillatory entrainment changes over developmental time is also lacking. Finally, we suggest a mechanism through which periodic environmental rhythms might facilitate both sensory processing and the development of volitional control even in the absence of oscillatory entrainment

    The LISA PathFinder DMU (Data Management Unit) flight model was formally accepted by ESA and ASD on 11 February 2010, after all hardware and software tests had been successfully completed. The diagnostics items are scheduled to be delivered by the end of 2010.     New LISA dynamics feedback control scheme: Common-mode isolation of test mass control and probes of test-mass acceleration

    The Drag-Free and Attitude Control System is a central element of LISA technology, ensuring the very high dynamic stability of spacecraft and test masses required in order to reach the sensitivity that gravitational wave astronomy in space requires. Applying electrostatic forces on test-masses is unavoidable but should be restricted to the minimum necessary to keep the spacecraft-test masses system in place, while granting the optimal quality of test-mass free-fall. To realise this, we propose a new test-mass suspension scheme that applies forces and torques only in proportion to any differential test mass motion observed, and we demonstrate that the new scheme significantly mitigates the amount of suspension forces and torques needed to control the whole system. The mathematical method involved allows us to derive a new observable measuring the differential acceleration of test masses projected on the relevant sensitive axes, which will have important consequences for LISA data calibration, processing and analysis

    3DLigandSite: Structure-based prediction of protein-ligand binding sites

    3DLigandSite is a web tool for the prediction of ligand-binding sites in proteins. Here, we report a significant update since the first release of 3DLigandSite in 2010. The overall methodology remains the same, with candidate binding sites in proteins inferred using known binding sites in related protein structures as templates. However, the initial structural modelling step now uses the newly available structures from the AlphaFold database or alternatively Phyre2 when AlphaFold structures are not available. Further, a sequence-based search using HHSearch has been introduced to identify template structures with bound ligands that are used to infer the ligand-binding residues in the query protein. Finally, we introduced a machine learning element as the final prediction step, which improves the accuracy of predictions and provides a confidence score for each residue predicted to be part of a binding site. Validation of 3DLigandSite on a set of 6416 binding sites obtained 92% recall at 75% precision for non-metal binding sites and 52% recall at 75% precision for metal binding sites. 3DLigandSite is available at https://www.wass-michaelislab.org/3dligandsite. Users submit either a protein sequence or structure. Results are displayed in multiple formats including an interactive Mol* molecular visualization of the protein and the predicted binding sites

    Interpersonal Neural Entrainment during Early Social Interaction

    Currently, we understand much about how children’s brains attend to and learn from information presented while they are alone, viewing a screen – but less about how interpersonal social influences are substantiated in the brain. Here, we consider research that examines how social behaviors affect not one, but both partners in a dyad. We review studies that measured interpersonal neural entrainment during early social interaction, considering two ways of measuring entrainment: concurrent entrainment (e.g., ‘when A is high, B is high’ – also known as synchrony) and sequential entrainment (‘changes in A forward-predict changes in B’). We discuss possible causes of interpersonal neural entrainment, and consider whether it is merely an epiphenomenon, or whether it plays an independent, mechanistic role in early attention and learning

Advocates claim that somatotropin improves efficiency and thus decreases the cost of production in dairy cows and growing swine. With Food and Drug Administration (F&DA) approval of bovine somatotropin (SST) expected within the year in the United States and approval of porcine somatotropin (PST) being sought, food animal veterinarians need to be knowledgeable of somatotropin and must be prepared to advise clients on the use of the product as a management tool

    Learning to imitate facial expressions through sound

    The question of how young infants learn to imitate others’ facial expressions has been central in developmental psychology for decades. Facial imitation has been argued to constitute a particularly challenging learning task for infants because facial expressions are perceptually opaque: infants cannot see changes in their own facial configuration when they execute a motor program, so how do they learn to match these gestures with those of their interacting partners? Here we argue that this apparent paradox mainly appears if one focuses only on the visual modality, as most existing work in this field has done so far. When considering other modalities, in particular the auditory modality, many facial expressions are not actually perceptually opaque. In fact, every orolabial expression that is accompanied by vocalisations has specific acoustic consequences, which means that it is relatively transparent in the auditory modality. Here, we describe how this relative perceptual transparency can allow infants to accrue experience relevant for orolabial, facial imitation every time they vocalise. We then detail two specific mechanisms that could support facial imitation learning through the auditory modality. First, we review evidence showing that experiencing correlated proprioceptive and auditory feedback when they vocalise – even when they are alone – enables infants to build audio-motor maps that could later support facial imitation of orolabial actions. Second, we show how these maps could also be used by infants to support imitation even for silent, orolabial facial expressions at a later stage. By considering non-visual perceptual domains, this paper expands our understanding of the ontogeny of facial imitation and offers new directions for future investigations
