The LuckyCam Survey for Very Low Mass Binaries II: 13 new M4.5-M6.0 Binaries
We present results from a high-angular-resolution survey of 78 very low mass
(VLM) binary systems with 6.0 = 0.15
arcsec/yr. 21 VLM binaries were detected, 13 of them new discoveries. The new
binary systems range in separation between 0.18 arcsec and 1.3 arcsec. The
distance-corrected binary fraction is 13.5% (+6.5%/-4%), in agreement with
previous results. 9 of the new binary systems have orbital radii > 10 AU,
including a new wide VLM binary with 27 AU projected orbital separation. One of
the new systems forms two components of a 2300 AU separation triple system. We
find that the orbital radius distribution of the binaries with V-K < 6.5 in
this survey appears to be different from that of redder (lower-mass) objects,
suggesting a possible rapid change in the orbital radius distribution at around
the M5 spectral type. The target sample was also selected to investigate X-ray
activity among VLM binaries. There is no detectable correlation between excess
X-Ray emission and the frequency and binary properties of the VLM systems.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures. Submitted to MNRA
A Generalization of the Goldberg-Sachs Theorem and its Consequences
The Goldberg-Sachs theorem is generalized for all four-dimensional manifolds
endowed with torsion-free connection compatible with the metric, the treatment
includes all signatures as well as complex manifolds. It is shown that when the
Weyl tensor is algebraically special severe geometric restrictions are imposed.
In particular it is demonstrated that the simple self-dual eigenbivectors of
the Weyl tensor generate integrable isotropic planes. Another result obtained
here is that if the self-dual part of the Weyl tensor vanishes in a Ricci-flat
manifold of (2,2) signature the manifold must be Calabi-Yau or symplectic and

In their article, ‘The spatialities of actually existing neoliberalism in Glasgow, 1977 to present’, Mark Boyle, Christopher McWilliams and Gareth Rice (2008) usefully problematise our current understanding of neoliberal urbanism. Our response is aimed at developing a sympathetic but critical approach to Boyle et al's understanding of neoliberal urbanism as illustrated by the Glasgow example. In particular, the counterposing by Boyle et al of a 'hybrid, mutant' model to a 'pure' model of neoliberalism for us misrepresents existing models of neoliberalism as a perfectly finished object rather than a roughly mottled process. That they do not identify any ‘pure’ model leads them to create a straw construct against which they can claim a more sophisticated, refined approach to the messiness of neoliberal urbanism. In contrast, we view neoliberalism as a contested and unstable response to accumulation crises at various scales of analysis
Nitrous oxide emissions from the Arabian Sea: A synthesis
We computed high-resolution (1º latitude x 1º longitude) seasonal and annual nitrous oxide (N2O) concentration fields for the Arabian Sea surface layer using a database containing more than 2400 values measured between December 1977 and July 1997. N2O concentrations are highest during the southwest (SW) monsoon along the southern Indian continental shelf. Annual emissions range from 0.33 to 0.70 Tg N2O and are dominated by fluxes from coastal regions during the SW and northeast monsoons. Our revised estimate for the annual N2O flux from the Arabian Sea is much more tightly constrained than the previous consensus derived using averaged in-situ data from a smaller number of studies. However, the tendency to focus on measurements in locally restricted features in combination with insufficient seasonal data coverage leads to considerable uncertainties of the concentration fields and thus in the flux estimates, especially in the coastal zones of the northern and eastern Arabian Sea. The overall mean relative error of the annual N2O emissions from the Arabian Sea was estimated to be at least 65%
Wave attenuation and dispersion due to floating ice covers
Experiments investigating the attenuation and dispersion of surface waves in
a variety of ice covers are performed using a refrigerated wave flume. The ice
conditions tested in the experiments cover naturally occurring combinations of
continuous, fragmented, pancake and grease ice. Attenuation rates are shown to
be a function of ice thickness, wave frequency, and the general rigidity of the
ice cover. Dispersion changes were minor except for large wavelength increases
when continuous covers were tested. Results are verified and compared with
existing literature to show the extended range of investigation in terms of
incident wave frequency and ice conditions
Nonthermal Emission from the Arches Cluster (G0.121+0.017) and the Origin of -ray Emission from 3EG J1746-2851
High resolution VLA observations of the Arches cluster near the Galactic
center show evidence of continuum emission at 3.6, 6, 20 and 90cm. The
continuum emission at 90cm is particularly striking because thermal
sources generally become optically thick at longer wavelengths and fall off in
brightness whereas non-thermal sources increase in brightness. It is argued
that the radio emission from this unique source has compact and diffuse
components produced by thermal and nonthermal processes, respectively. Compact
sources within the cluster arise from stellar winds of mass-losing stars (Lang,
Goss & Rodriguez 2001a) whereas diffuse emission is likely to be due to
colliding wind shocks of the cluster flow generating relativistic particles due
to diffuse shock acceleration. We also discuss the possibility that
-ray emission from 3EG J1746--2851, located within 3.3 of the Arches
cluster, results from the inverse Compton scattering of the radiation field of

Quantum fluctuations in coupled dark solitons in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates
We show that the quantum fluctuations associated with the Bogoliubov
quasiparticle vacuum can be strongly concentrated inside dark solitons in a
trapped Bose Einstein condensate. We identify a finite number of anomalous
modes that are responsible for such quantum phenomena. The fluctuations in
these anomalous modes correspond to the `zero-point' oscillations in coupled

Leptogenesis implications in models with Abelian family symmetry and one extra real Higgs singlet
We show that the neutrino models, as suggested by Low, which have an
additional Abelian family symmetry and a real Higgs singlet to the default
see-saw do not hinder the possibility of successful thermal leptogenesis. For
these models (neglecting radiative effects), we have investigated the situation
of strong washout in both the one-flavor approximation and when flavor effects
are included. The result is that while such models predict that theta_{13}=0
and that one light neutrino to be massless, they do not modify or provide
significant constraints on the typical leptogenesis scenario where the final

Control of trapped-ion quantum states with optical pulses
We present new results on the quantum control of systems with infinitely
large Hilbert spaces. A control-theoretic analysis of the control of trapped
ion quantum states via optical pulses is performed. We demonstrate how resonant
bichromatic fields can be applied in two contrasting ways -- one that makes the
system completely uncontrollable, and the other that makes the system
controllable. In some interesting cases, the Hilbert space of the
qubit-harmonic oscillator can be made finite, and the Schr\"{o}dinger equation
controllable via bichromatic resonant pulses. Extending this analysis to the
quantum states of two ions, a new scheme for producing entangled qubits is
