    Defining region

Regional studies are right in the center of scientific and political discourse at the moment; regional issues acquire special significance in the countries with a transition economy. However, there is still no clear definition of the term “region”. Due to its multifaceted nature, it certainly has natural, cultural, economic, political, and social dimension. At the same time, this term occupies a wide range of phenomena from small parts of countries to huge continental interstate formations. The goal of this paper is the analysis of various theoretical and methodological approaches to the definition of the region. We have brought different approaches, from the classical school to the New Economic Geography. The latter considers the region as a unit of space for economic activities. Thus, the region becomes a multidisciplinary object of research within the framework of economic theory and economic geography. In Europe, the integration processes put the region on the forefront of economic policy. The issues of regional policy are equally important in the light of the economic modernization processes taking place in Russia and Serbia. This article also summarizes the experience of regional studies of Serbian and Russian schools. The results can be used in further theoretical and applied research, writing theses in the field of economics and economic geography

Super-slippery Carbon Nanotubes: Symmetry Breaking breaks friction

The friction between the walls of multi-wall carbon nanotubes is shown to be extremely low in general, with important details related to the specific choice of the walls. This is governed by a simple expression revealing that the phenomenon is a profound consequence of the specific symmetry breaking: super-slippery sliding of the incommensurate walls is a Goldstone mode. Three universal principles of tribology, offering a recipe for the lubricant selection are emphasized.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, 1 table; pdf available from: http://www.ff.bg.ac.yu/qmf/qsg_e.ht

Symmetry Based Properties of the Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Nanotubes

The full geometrical symmetry groups (the line groups) of the monolayered, 2Hb and 3R polytypes of the inorganic MoS2 and WS2 micro- and nanotubes of arbitrary chirality are found. This is used to find the coordinates of the representative atoms sufficient to determine completely geometrical structure of tubes. Then some physical properties which can be deduced from the symmetry are discussed: electron band degeneracies, selection rules, general forms of the second rank tensors and potentials, phonon spectra.Comment: 6 pages 1 figur

Surface Bloch waves in metamaterial and metal-dielectric superlattices

We study the properties of electromagnetic Bloch waves in semi-infinite periodic structures created by alternating metamaterial and dielectric layers. We derive and analyze the dispersion relations in the long-wavelength limit for both TE- and TM-polarized surface Bloch modes, for magnetic metamaterials with negative refraction and metal-dielectric plasmonic superlattices. We reveal that in the subwavelength regime the bulk modes are characterized by three different refractive indices ("tri-refringence") while the surface modes can propagate parallel to the Bloch wavevector and along the interface between superlattice and semi-infinite dielectric.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

The role of human resources on the economy: a study of the Balkan eu member states

In this paper we analyze the impact of the quality of human capital on the main economic indicators of South-Eastern Europe countries [SEE] at the NUTS 2 level. The subjects of this research are the human capital indicators of regional competitiveness. The quality of human capital depends largely on the age structure of the population and the quality of education. Those regions, which have the highest percentage of the working-age population and highly educated people, are able to achieve higher productivity and gain a competitive advantage over other regions. As main indicators of the quality of human capital we identified: population; persons aged 25-64 with tertiary education attainment; students in tertiary education and participation of adults aged 25-64 in education and training and human resources in science and technology. As main economic indicators, we identified: regional gross domestic product; employment and income of households. The aim of this paper is to determine whether there is a correlation between the indicators of the quality of human capital and economic indicators. As a main methodology we have used the correlation coefficient which shows interdependence of the analyzed indicators. As part of our analysis, we consider only EU member states that belong to the SEE countries: Slovenia, Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria and Greece. We conclude that in all countries there is a high multiple correlation coefficient between the indicators human resources in science and technology, number of students and employment. This paper is the result of the project No. 47007 III funded by the Ministry for Education, Science and Technological Development of Republic of Serbia

Dimerization of Dopamine (D2) and Adenosine (A2A) Receptors

This experiment will aim to explore the heterodimerization of Dopamine (D2) and Adenosine (A2A) receptors in cells when bound to different ligands. Borroto-Escuela et al. (2018) investigated the dimerization of the A2AR-D2R in rats when administered with cocaine, and they found that disrupting the A2AR-D2R complex restores the cocaine reward system in rats. This was a strong influence as to why we chose to investigate A2AR-D2R dimerization in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. One goal that we have for this experiment is to combine our current laboratory skills with new laboratory techniques. There are constantly new techniques in labs, and performing this research project will allow us to have the confidence in our base skills to know that we can carry out new techniques properly. Our main motivation in performing this research project is to learn from our PhD student. Working with Grant, we will explore the dimerization of D2R and A2AR. As Grant publishes his own paper about GPCR, we will highlight our contributions made at the undergraduate level. If successful, we will play a role in preparing cells that will be imaged to explore the dimerization

Solar energy application in houses heating systems in Russia

    Get PDF
The solar energy is widely used around the world for electricity generation and heating systems in municipal services. But its use is complicated in the number of territories with uneven receipts of solar radiation on the earth’s surface and large number of cloudy days during a year. A hypothesis on the possibility of application of individual solar collectors for heating of houses in the number of cities of Russia has been tested. The existing designs of solar collectors and checking the possibility of their application in northern territories of Russia are investigated. The analysis was carried out taking into account features of relief and other climatic conditions of the Perm and Sverdlovsk regions. As the result of research, the basic recommended conditions for application of solar batteries in houses of the northern Russian cities have been resumed. © 2017 IJCRSEE. All Right Reserved

Birefringence upper limit analysis of low birefringence fibers employed in the Faraday effect current sensors

    No full text
The theoretical model of the Faraday rotation in the low birefringence optical fiber is proposed to serve as a convenient tool for the determination of the birefringence upper limit allowed to retain current sensor sensitivity. The measurement technique offers a fast and efficient determination of the ultra-low linear birefringence when other techniques are not sensitive enough or they are difficult to implement. A temperature dependence of the Faraday rotation and its causes are investigated
