    La violence sexuelle contre les femmes dans les pays en guerre et vivant des conflits ethniques : défis pour la pratique

    Des 27 millions de personnes réfugiées et déplacées dans le monde aujourd’hui, 80 % sont des femmes et des enfants. Entre les années 1992 et 2001, 116 709 femmes ont demandé l’asile au Canada. La violence sexuelle contre les femmes dans un contexte de guerre et de conflits ethniques est considérée comme une violation des droits humains depuis les années 90. Cette problématique interpelle la communauté internationale et toutes les praticiennes. À leur arrivée, les femmes réfugiées victimes de violence sexuelle n’ont pas accès à des services sociaux adéquats, adaptés à leurs besoins. Cet article explore les dimensions du viol de guerre et de la victimisation de femmes qui peuvent éprouver des problèmes d’intégration lors de leur installation au pays à cause de leur grande vulnérabilité et des séquelles des violences subies. De plus, notre conception occidentale des secteurs « privé » et « public » soulève d’importantes questions sur nos approches d’intervention qui ne sont pas nécessairement appropriées aux besoins de ces femmes

    Single-photon emission at a rate of 143 MHz from a deterministic quantum-dot microlens triggered by a mode-locked vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting laser

The quantum light source consists of an InGaAs QD which is deterministically integrated within a monolithic microlens with a distributed Bragg reflector as back-side mirror, which is triggered using the frequency-doubled emission of a mode-locked vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting laser (ML-VECSEL). The utilized compact and stable laser system allows us to excite the single-QD microlens at a wavelength of 508 nm with a pulse repetition rate close to 500 MHz at a pulse width of 4.2 ps. Probing the photon statistics of the emission from a single QD state at saturation, we demonstrate single-photon emission of the QD-microlens chip with g(2)(0) < 0.03 at a record-high single-photon flux of (143 ± 16) MHz collected by the first lens of the detection system.     A case-only approach for assessing gene-sex interaction in human longevity

    As one aspect of the complex feature of longevity, gene-sex interaction plays an important role in influencing human life span. With advances in molecular genetics, more studies aimed at assessing gene-sex interaction are expected. New and valid statistical methods are needed. In this paper, we introduce a nontraditional approach, the case-only design, which was originally proposed for assessing gene and disease associations, to detect gene-sex interaction in human longevity. Applications of this method to data collected from centenarian studies show that it can produce consistent results as compared with results obtained from case-control and other approaches. Important features of the application in human longevity studies are highlighted and discussed. Since centenarians constitute a special population representing successful ageing, the easily applicable case-only approach will be an important tool for screening potential major genes that contribute to human longevity.     Towards the synthesis of wastewater recovery facilities using enviroeconomic optimization

    The wastewater treatment industry is undergoing a major shift towards a proactive interest in recovering materials and energy from wastewater streams, driven by both economic incentives and environmental sustainability. With the array of available treatment technologies and recovery options growing steadily, systematic approaches to determining the inherent trade-off between multiple economic and environmental objectives become necessary, namely enviroeconomic optimization. The main objective of this chapter is to present one such methodology based on superstructure modeling and multi-objective optimization, where the main environmental impacts are quantified using life cycle assessment (LCA). This methodology is illustrated with the case study of a municipal wastewater treatment facility. The results show that accounting for LCA considerations early on in the synthesis problem may lead to dramatic changes in the optimal process configuration, thereby supporting LCA integration into decision-making tools for wastewater treatment alongside economical selection criteria

    Visualizing Mortality Dynamics in the Lexis Diagram

    The goal of this book is simple: We would like to show how mortality dynamics can be visualized in the so-called Lexis diagram. To appeal to as many potential readers as possible, we do not require any specialist knowledge. This approach may be disappointing: Demographers may have liked more information about the mathematical underpinnings of population dynamics on the Lexis surface as demonstrated, for instance, by Arthur and Vaupel in 1984. Statisticians would have probably preferred more information about the underlying smoothing methods that were used. Epidemiologists likewise might miss discussions about the etiology of diseases. Sociologists would have probably expected that our results were more embedded into theoretical frameworks...

    Temperature-induced smearing of the coulomb gap: experiment and computer simulation

    We present the first verification of the theoretically predicted effect of temperature-induced smearing of the Coulomb gap. Measurements of the variable-range-hopping conductivity (VRH) in samples of ion-implanted Si:As and computer simulation are used to study the density of states (DOS) near the Fermi level (FL) in the impurity band. The VRH is determined by the DOS integrated over some energy range that depends on temperature T and on the magnetic field B. Using the interplay between T and B we find that the DOS in the vicinity of the FL increases with increasing T

    Biological mechanisms of disease and death in Moscow: rationale and design of the survey on Stress Aging and Health in Russia (SAHR)

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Prior research has revealed large differences in health and mortality across countries, socioeconomic groups, and individuals. Russia experiences one of the world's highest levels of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, great mortality differences within the population, and a heavy burden of ill health. Psychological stress has been suggested as a likely explanation of health loss and premature death in Russia and Eastern Europe. However, physiological mechanisms connecting stress with health in Russia remain unclear since existing epidemiological data are scarce and limited to conventional risk factors.</p> <p>Method and Design</p> <p>The survey on Stress Aging and Health in Russia (SAHR) is addressing this knowledge gap by collecting an unusually rich database that includes a wide range of reported information, physical and cognitive health outcomes, and biomarkers in a sample of Muscovite men and women aged 55 and older. The total planned sample size is 2,000 individuals. The sample was randomly selected from epidemiological cohorts formed in Moscow between the mid-1970s and the 1990s and from medical population registers. The baseline data collection was carried out from December 2006 to June 2009. Interviews and medical tests were administered at hospital or at home according to standardized protocol. Questionnaire information includes health, socio-demographic characteristics, economic well-being, cognitive functioning, and batteries on stress and depression. Biomarkers include anthropometry, grip strength, resting ECG, conventional cardiovascular factors of risk such as lipid profile and blood pressure, and other biochemical parameters such as those related to inflammation, glucose and insulin resistance, coagulation, fibrinolysis, and stress hormones. In addition to these measurements, SAHR includes dynamic biomarkers provided by 24-hour ECG (Holter) monitoring. This method continuously registers the beat-to-beat heart rate in naturalistic conditions without restrictions on normal daily activities. It provides information about heart functioning, including heart rate variability and ischemic and arrhythmic events.</p> <p>Re-examination of the study subjects will be conducted in 2009–2011 and will focus on health, functional status, economic conditions, behaviors, and attitudes towards aging. The subjects are also followed up for mortality and non-fatal health events.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>The SAHR will produce a valuable set of established and novel biomarkers combined with self-reported data for the international research community and will provide important insights into factors and biological mechanisms of mortality and health losses in Russia.</p

    Quantised Vortices in an Exciton-Polariton Fluid

    One of the most striking quantum effects in a low temperature interacting Bose gas is superfluidity. First observed in liquid 4He, this phenomenon has been intensively studied in a variety of systems for its amazing features such as the persistence of superflows and the quantization of the angular momentum of vortices. The achievement of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in dilute atomic gases provided an exceptional opportunity to observe and study superfluidity in an extremely clean and controlled environment. In the solid state, Bose-Einstein condensation of exciton polaritons has now been reported several times. Polaritons are strongly interacting light-matter quasi-particles, naturally occurring in semiconductor microcavities in the strong coupling regime and constitute a very interesting example of composite bosons. Even though pioneering experiments have recently addressed the propagation of a fluid of coherent polaritons, still no conclusive evidence is yet available of its superfluid nature. In the present Letter, we report the observation of spontaneous formation of pinned quantised vortices in the Bose-condensed phase of a polariton fluid by means of phase and amplitude imaging. Theoretical insight into the possible origin of such vortices is presented in terms of a generalised Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The implications of our observations concerning the superfluid nature of the non-equilibrium polariton fluid are finally discussed.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure
