Learning what matters - Sampling interesting patterns
In the field of exploratory data mining, local structure in data can be
described by patterns and discovered by mining algorithms. Although many
solutions have been proposed to address the redundancy problems in pattern
mining, most of them either provide succinct pattern sets or take the interests
of the user into account-but not both. Consequently, the analyst has to invest
substantial effort in identifying those patterns that are relevant to her
specific interests and goals. To address this problem, we propose a novel
approach that combines pattern sampling with interactive data mining. In
particular, we introduce the LetSIP algorithm, which builds upon recent
advances in 1) weighted sampling in SAT and 2) learning to rank in interactive
pattern mining. Specifically, it exploits user feedback to directly learn the
parameters of the sampling distribution that represents the user's interests.
We compare the performance of the proposed algorithm to the state-of-the-art in
interactive pattern mining by emulating the interests of a user. The resulting
system allows efficient and interleaved learning and sampling, thus
user-specific anytime data exploration. Finally, LetSIP demonstrates favourable
trade-offs concerning both quality-diversity and exploitation-exploration when
compared to existing methods.Comment: PAKDD 2017, extended versio

Evidence for an Excited Hyperon State in pp -> p K^+ Y^{0*}
Indications for the production of a neutral excited hyperon in the reaction
pp -> p K^+ Y^{0*} are observed in an experiment performed with the ANKE
spectrometer at COSY-J\"ulich at a beam momentum of 3.65 GeV/c. Two final
states were investigated simultaneously, viz. Y^{0*} -> pi^+X^- and pi^-X^+,
and consistent results were obtained in spite of the quite different
experimental conditions. The parameters of the hyperon state are M(Y^{0*})=
(1480 +/- 15) MeV/c^2 and Gamma(Y^{0*})= (60 +/- 15) MeV/c^2. The production
cross section is of the order of few hundred nanobarns. Since the isospin of
the Y^{0*} has not been determined here, it could either be an observation of
the Sigma(1480), a one-star resonance of the PDG tables, or alternatively a
Lambda hyperon. Relativistic quark models for the baryon spectrum do not
predict any excited hyperon in this mass range and so the Y^{0*} may be of
exotic nature.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Phys.Rev.Let
Observation of inverse diproton photodisintegration at intermediate energies
The reaction pp->{pp}_s\gamma, where {pp}_s is a proton pair with an
excitation energy E_{pp}<3 MeV, has been observed with the ANKE spectrometer at
COSY-Juelich for proton beam energies of T_p=0.353, 0.500, and 0.550 GeV. This
is equivalent to photodisintegration of a free 1S_0 diproton for photon
energies E\gamma ~ T_p/2. The differential cross sections measured for c.m.
angles 0 deg.<\theta_{pp}<20 deg. exhibit a steep increase with angle that is
compatible with E1 and E2 multipole contributions. The ratio of the measured
cross sections to those of np->d\gamma is on the 10^{-3}-10^{-2} level. The
increase of the pp->{pp}_s\gamma cross section with T_p might reflect the
influence of the Delta(1232) excitation.Comment: 4 pages + 4 figure
Kaon Pair Production in Proton--Proton Collisions
The differential and total cross sections for kaon pair production in the
pp->ppK+K- reaction have been measured at three beam energies of 2.65, 2.70,
and 2.83 GeV using the ANKE magnetic spectrometer at the COSY-Juelich
accelerator. These near-threshold data are separated into pairs arising from
the decay of the phi-meson and the remainder. For the non-phi selection, the
ratio of the differential cross sections in terms of the K-p and K+p invariant
masses is strongly peaked towards low masses. This effect can be described
quantitatively by using a simple ansatz for the K-p final state interaction,
where it is seen that the data are sensitive to the magnitude of an effective
K-p scattering length. When allowance is made for a small number of phi events
where the K- rescatters from the proton, the phi region is equally well
described at all three energies. A very similar phenomenon is discovered in the
ratio of the cross sections as functions of the K-pp and K+pp invariant masses
and the identical final state interaction model is also very successful here.
The world data on the energy dependence of the non-phi total cross section is
also reproduced, except possibly for the results closest to threshold.Comment: 12 two-column pages, 12 figures, 1 tabl
Coherent pion production in proton-deuteron collisions
Values of the proton analysing power in the
reactions at 350-360~MeV
per nucleon were obtained by using a polarised proton beam incident on a
deuterium cluster-jet target and with a polarised deuteron beam incident on a
target cell filled with polarised hydrogen. These results have a much larger
angular coverage than existing data. First measurements are also presented of
the deuteron vector analysing power and the deuteron-proton spin correlations.
Data were also obtained on the deuteron-proton spin correlation and proton
analysing power at small angles at 600~MeV per nucleon, though the angular
coverage at this energy was much more restricted even when using a deuteron
beam. By combining the extrapolated values of the spin correlations to the
forward or backward directions with published measurements of the deuteron
tensor analysing powers, the relative phases between the two non-vanishing
amplitudes were evaluated.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
The neutron-proton charge-exchange amplitudes measured in the dp -> ppn reaction
The unpolarised differential cross section and the two deuteron tensor
analysing powers A_{xx} and A_{yy} of the pol{d}p -> (pp)n charge-exchange
reaction have been measured with the ANKE spectrometer at the COSY storage
ring. Using deuteron beams with energies 1.2, 1.6, 1.8, and 2.27 GeV, data were
obtained for small momentum transfers to a (pp) system with low excitation
energy. The results at the three lower energies are consistent with impulse
approximation predictions based upon the current knowledge of the
neutron-proton amplitudes. However, at 2.27GeV, where these amplitudes are far
more uncertain, agreement requires a reduction in the overall double-spin-flip
contribution, with an especially significant effect in the longitudinal
direction. These conclusions are supported by measurements of the
deuteron-proton spin-correlation parameters C_{x,x} and C_{y,y} that were
carried out in the pol{d}pol{p} -> (pp)n reaction at 1.2 and 2.27GeV. The
values obtained for the proton analysing power also suggest the need for a
radical re-evaluation of the neutron-proton elastic scattering amplitudes at
the higher energy. It is therefore clear that such measurements can provide a
valuable addition to the neutron-proton database in the charge-exchange region.Comment: 13 pages with 13 figure
Morphofunctional reorganization of plantar aponeurosis in experimental modeling of fasciopathy by synthetic analogue of prostaglandin E1
Foundation. Chronic plantar fasciopathic pain syndrome is a pathology that significantly affects the quality of life of patients of all age categories. Insufficient knowledge of the etiological and pathogenetic factors in the development of fasciopathies explains the multiplicity, and sometimes inconsistency, of conservative and surgical treatment regimens. The choice of the optimal variant of therapeutic or surgical intervention may be associated with experimental modeling of fasciopathies and the study of the dynamics of the pathological process. The aim. To study the morphological changes in structures identical to the human plantar aponeurosis in experimental modeling of fasciopathy in animals.Research methods. The material for the study was fragments of the tendonaponeurotic complex of the foot of laboratory animals (control group: animals with the introduction of physiological sodium chloride solution (n = 12); main group: animals with the introduction of alprostadil (n = 12)). The methods of light microscopy (staining with alcian and toluidine blue, according to Van Gieson, Weigert – Van Gieson and Picro-Mallory) and morphometry were used. Results and discussion. As a result of the study, it was found that the four-fold administration of alprostadil had a significant effect on the structure of the dense fibrous connective tissue of the plantar foot of laboratory animals. The mechanisms of damage (edema, microhemorrhages, infiltration by lymphocytes, plasmocytes and leukocytes, dystrophy by the type of mucoid and fibrinoid swelling, delamination and rupture of collagen fibers), adaptation and regeneration (the appearance of a large number of activated fibrocytes, fibroblasts, microvessels, neoplasm of collagen fibers) were activated. All this together led to spatial focal histotopographic changes, consisting in an increase in the cellular composition of connective tissue structures against the background of a noticeable violation of their spatial orientation.Conclusion. Modeling of fasciopathy using alprostadil was accompanied by the appearance of mosaic reversible and irreversible heteromorphic and heterochronous changes in all connective tissue aponeurotic structures. Such histotopographic changes should be considered as one of the reasons for the clinical manifestations of plantar fasciopathies, causing functional insufficiency and explaining the clinical recurrent nature of the pathological process
The production of K+K- pairs in proton-proton collisions at 2.83 GeV
Differential and total cross sections for the pp -> ppK+K- reaction have been
measured at a proton beam energy of 2.83 GeV using the COSY-ANKE magnetic
spectrometer. Detailed model descriptions fitted to a variety of
one-dimensional distributions permit the separation of the pp -> pp phi cross
section from that of non-phi production. The differential spectra show that
higher partial waves represent the majority of the pp -> pp phi total cross
section at an excess energy of 76 MeV, whose energy dependence would then seem
to require some s-wave phi-p enhancement near threshold. The non-phi data can
be described in terms of the combined effects of two-body final state
interactions using the same effective scattering parameters determined from
lower energy data.Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures, 3 table
