A risk based model for quantifying the impact of information quality

    Get PDF
Information quality is one of the key determinants of information system success. When information quality is poor, it can cause a variety of risks in an organization. To manage resources for information quality improvement effectively, it is necessary to understand where, how, and how much information quality impacts an organization's ability to successfully deliver its objectives. So far, existing approaches have mostly focused on the measurement of information quality but not adequately on the impact that information quality causes. This paper presents a model to quantify the business impact that arises through poor information quality in an organization by using a risk based approach. It hence addresses the inherent uncertainty in the relationship between information quality and organizational impact. The model can help information managers to obtain quantitative figures which can be used to build reliable and convincing business cases for information quality improvement.EPSRCThis is the author accepted manuscript. Green roof irrigation management based on substrate water potential assures water saving without affecting plant physiological performance

Irrigation management in extensive green roofs (EGRs) is crucial in Mediterranean and semi-arid climates, as it should guarantee efficient water use while ensuring plant survival and vegetation cover. However, benefits of maintaining moderately low substrate water potential (psi(s)) have not been adequately investigated to date. An irrigation control unit based on psi(s) thresholds for irrigation (MediWater Safe [MWS]) was compared to a common irrigation timer maintaining psi(s) similar to 0 MPa (CTR) in shrub-vegetated Mediterranean EGR modules. The effect of the different irrigation regimes on substrate temperature, plant water relations (leaf conductance to water vapour, midday water potential and turgor loss point) and root vulnerability to heat stress via electrolyte leakage was tested in four shrub species. Decreasing psi(s) thresholds to -0.4 MPa reduced irrigation volumes by 68% in 3 summer months. However, the MWS unit neither influenced plant water status and vegetation cover nor induced physiological acclimation responses. Brief irrigation cycles imposed by MWS in the warmest hours reduced substrate surface temperature by 3 degrees C compared to CTR. Plant water status dynamics and root vulnerability to heat were species specific. Progressive stomatal closure and plant decline occurred only in Ceanothus thyrsiflorus and were associated to high root vulnerability to heat. Mortality occurred only in some Ceanothus plants in the CTR module, where higher psi(s) favoured the expansion of Hyperucum x moserianum. The results suggest that selecting proper psi(s) thresholds for irrigation could optimize EGR benefits, guaranteeing substantial water savings and proper plant establishment. Moreover, we claim root resistance to heat as a key parameter for plant selection in Mediterranean EGRs

Supernova 2012ec: Identification of the progenitor and early monitoring with PESSTO

We present the identification of the progenitor of the Type IIP SN 2012ec in archival pre-explosion HST WFPC2 and ACS/WFC F814W images. The properties of the progenitor are further constrained by non-detections in pre-explosion WFPC2 F450W and F606W images. We report a series of early photometric and spectroscopic observations of SN 2012ec. The r'-band light curve shows a plateau with M(r')=-17.0. The early spectrum is similar to the Type IIP SN 1999em, with the expansion velocity measured at Halpha absorption minimum of -11,700 km/s (at 1 day post-discovery). The photometric and spectroscopic evolution of SN 2012ec shows it to be a Type IIP SN, discovered only a few days post-explosion (<6d). We derive a luminosity for the progenitor, in comparison with MARCS model SEDs, of log L/Lsun = 5.15+/-0.19, from which we infer an initial mass range of 14-22Msun. This is the first SN with an identified progenitor to be followed by the Public ESO Spectroscopic Survey of Transient Objects (PESSTO).Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, MNRAS accepte

SN 2013df, a double-peaked IIb supernova from a compact progenitor and an extended H envelope

Optical observations of the type IIb SN 2013df from a few days to about 250 days after explosion are presented. These observations are complemented with UV photometry taken by \textit{SWIFT} up to 60 days post-explosion. The double-peak optical light curve is similar to those of SNe 1993J and 2011fu although with different decline and rise rates. From the modelling of the bolometric light curve, we have estimated that the total mass of synthesised 56^{56}Ni in the explosion is 0.1\sim0.1 M_{\odot}, while the ejecta mass is 0.81.40.8-1.4 M_{\odot} and the explosion energy 0.41.2×10510.4-1.2 \times 10^{51}erg. In addition, we have estimated a lower limit to the progenitor radius ranging from 6416964-169 RR_{\odot}. The spectral evolution indicates that SN 2013df had a hydrogen envelope similar to SN 1993J (0.2\sim 0.2 M_{\odot}). The line profiles in nebular spectra suggest that the explosion was asymmetric with the presence of clumps in the ejecta, while the [O\,{\sc i}] λ\lambdaλ\lambda63006300, 63646364 luminosities, may indicate that the progenitor of SN 2013df was a relatively low mass star ( 1213\sim 12-13 M_{\odot}).Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, 9 tables, accepted for publication in MNRA

The supernova impostor PSN J09132750+7627410 and its progenitor

We report the results of our follow-up campaign of the supernova impostor PSN J09132750+7627410, based on optical data covering 250d\sim250\,\rm{d}. From the beginning, the transient shows prominent narrow Balmer lines with P-Cygni profiles, with a blue-shifted absorption component becoming more prominent with time. Along the 3months\sim3\,\rm{months} of the spectroscopic monitoring, broad components are never detected in the hydrogen lines, suggesting that these features are produced in slowly expanding material. The transient reaches an absolute magnitude Mr=13.60±0.19magM_r=-13.60\pm0.19\,\rm{mag} at maximum, a typical luminosity for supernova impostors. Amateur astronomers provided 4years\sim4\,\rm{years} of archival observations of the host galaxy, NGC 2748. The detection of the quiescent progenitor star in archival images obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope suggests it to be an 182018-20\msun white-yellow supergiant.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, supplemental material available in the source file.
