Early identification of the difficult airway from orbital deformity

    Get PDF
"We report an adult patient presenting for surgery with hidden marked orbital exenteration (Figures 1, 2). The patient had history of resected left orbital neoplasm that remained concealed under an eye patch during preoperative physical examination and presentation to the operating room. Face mask ventilation proved impossible after anesthetic induction. Removal of the eye patch revealed a large facial orbital floor defect from exenteration of the orbit floor and the patient immediately underwent endotracheal intubation. Following the procedure, postoperative respiratory insufficiency required additional airway support. Emergent placement of a laryngeal mask airway provided adequate ventilation."--CaseJulie M. The role of psychological flexibility in the relationship between self-concealment and disordered eating symptoms

    Get PDF
The present cross-sectional study investigated whether psychological flexibility mediates the association between self-concealment and disordered eating (DE) symptoms among non-clinical college students. Data of 209 male and female participants (nfemale = 165), aged 18-22 years old, were used for analyses. Self-concealment was found to be positively associated with DE symptoms (i.e., general eating disorder symptoms and eating disorder-related cognitions) and negatively associated with psychological flexibility. Psychological flexibility was inversely associated with DE symptoms. Finally, psychological flexibility was found to mediate the association between self-concealment and DE symptoms after accounting for gender, ethnic background, and body mass index (BMI)

Difficulties in Emotion Regulation, Alexithymia, and Social Phobia Are Associated With Disordered Eating in Male and Female Undergraduate Athletes

This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.Investigations of disordered eating in the athlete population tend to focus on females and the influence of sport level. This leaves unanswered whether, and how, team interdependence (i.e., whether the competition is engaged with one person or as a team) may differentially impact male athletes. In the present study, we recruited a sample of non-athletes, individual athletes, and team athletes and examined the interaction of gender and teammate interdependence on established psychosocial risk factors for disordered eating, including social phobia, alexithymia, and emotion regulation. Although we identified a significant main effect of gender, there was no main effect of team type, nor was there a significant interaction of gender and team type. Using descriptive discriminant analysis, these variables significantly discriminated between genders. Women were defined by higher scores than men on drive for thinness, body dissatisfaction, and emotion recognition and men were defined by relatively higher scores on emotion dysregulation and binge eating. When we combined all athletes and compared them with non-athletes, a significant interaction of gender and athlete status emerged such that female athletes, compared to male athletes and women non-athletes, were defined by higher scores on drive for thinness, emotion dysregulation, and binge eating. Conversely, male athletes, compared to female athletes, were defined by greater difficulty identifying feelings and body dissatisfaction. Non-athletes were not well defined by the discriminant function. These results highlight that emotional processes convey risk of eating disorders in men and women, particularly in athletes, and these risk factors are not uniform.5T32MH016434-405K12HD08584

Mindfulness and Shinrin-Yoku: Potential for Physiological and Psychological Interventions during Uncertain Times

    Get PDF
Mindfulness and Shinrin-yoku (SY) translated as forest bathing, is potentially effective to alleviate mental health issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. The purpose of this article is to provide a translational and pragmatic approach to understanding mindfulness in the context of SY and psychological wellbeing through a rapid review of the literature. The background of mindfulness and SY practice are discussed and the emotional, neuroendocrine, and neurobiological responses are examined. Next, a rapid review of the literature examined six studies, published between 2010 and 2020 to determine what is known regarding the relationship between SY, mindfulness, and psychological wellbeing. The studies included 21–360 participants with a mean age of 20–55 years. The results demonstrated a significant positive correlation between nature, mindfulness, and measures of psychological wellbeing. During uncertain events, including COVID-19, weaving mindfulness with SY may be specifically important to at-risk groups, those experiencing depression, loneliness, and social isolation, and at-risk populations such as college students, veterans, and professionals with high levels of stress. The goal of this review is to provide a thorough background and support of this cost-effective modality to promote overall psychological wellbeing as a preventative measure to those at risk or experiencing psychological illnesses

Valence band and core levels of Ce5Ni2Si3 crystal studied by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy

    Get PDF
The crystal of Ce5Ni2Si3 was prepared by the Czochralski method. The X-ray photoemission spectroscopy was measured for the valence band and the core levels. Based on the Ce(3d) doublet and its satellites a small value of the hybridization parameter of the f-states with the conduction electrons ¢ = 4 meV and the f-occupancy nf close to 1 were found. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy shows that the region between 0 and 3 eV is predominated by the Ni(3d) and Ce(4f) peaks. Some features of the multiplet structure of the Ce(4f) states are also visible close to the Fermi level

Saturation effect for dependence of the electrical conductivity of planar oriented nematic liquid crystal 6CB on the concentration of Cu7PS6 nanoparticles

    Get PDF
The influence of Cu7PS6 nanoparticles with the average size 117 nm on the dielectric properties of planar oriented nematic liquid crystal 6CB has been investigated within the frequency range 10(1) ...10(6) Hz and at the temperature 293 K. It has been shown that when changing the concentration of nanoparticles within the range 0 to 1 wt.%, the conductivity of the liquid crystal changes stronger than its dielectric permittivity. It has been shown that the electrical conductivity increases monotonously with increasing the concentration of nanoparticles. However, for this dependence a saturation effect is observed. The mechanism of this effect was proposed.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Trauma in Veterans with Substance Use Disorder: Similar Treatment Need among Urban and Rural Residents

    Get PDF
Purpose: The objective of this study is to determine whether rural residence is associated with trauma exposure or posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms among military veterans seeking treatment for substance use disorder (SUD) through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Delivering mental health services to veterans in rural areas is a challenge, so identifying differences in the causes and outcomes of trauma exposure would assist in effectively targeting service delivery. Methods: Veterans (N = 196) entering SUD treatment at 3 Midwestern VA treatment centers were designated as either urban or rural, based on rural-urban commuting area (RUCA) codes. The veterans completed the Life Events Checklist, the Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist, and the Addiction Severity Index’s psychiatric status subscale. Hypothesized relationships between rural-urban residence and both trauma exposure and symptomology were tested using independent samples t tests, chi-square tests, and ordinary least squares regression. Findings: The range of traumatic experiences was similar between rural and urban veterans, and rural-urban residence was not significantly associated with the overall array of traumas experienced or the symptom measures’ overall scores or subscores. Of 17 possible traumatic lifetime experiences, rural veterans differed from urban veterans on only 2, reporting significantly lower rates of transportation accidents and unwanted sexual experiences. Conclusions: In both the causes of trauma and the need for treatment, veterans residing in rural areas differ little from their urban counterparts
