    Enumeration of RNA structures by Matrix Models

    We enumerate the number of RNA contact structures according to their genus, i.e. the topological character of their pseudoknots. By using a recently proposed matrix model formulation for the RNA folding problem, we obtain exact results for the simple case of an RNA molecule with an infinitely flexible backbone, in which any arbitrary pair of bases is allowed. We analyze the distribution of the genus of pseudoknots as a function of the total number of nucleotides along the phosphate-sugar backbone.Comment: RevTeX, 4 pages, 2 figure

    Landscape ecology is a discipline that uses many indices to describe environmental dynamics as a function of structural patch organization. Application of landscape ecology methods can be a way to evaluate heterogeneity and fragmentation of a habitat. Landscape indices were applied to evaluate if the algal heterogeneity of a vermetid reef can be related to the reef structure. Results show that heterogeneity is independent from reef width, but algal patches are wider and less abundant in a large cuvette and less wide but in higher number in small cuvette

    Compact Model for Multiple Independent Gates Ambipolar Devices

    The model presented is a charge-based model that assures the continuity of the current and the analytical derivability of charges to obtain the parasitic capacitances. It has been conceived to support the multiple independent gates, typical of nano-array structures, where each gate controls the charge in the channel. Charge conservation implies constant current in the different section of the multiple gate nanowire FET, making possible the development of a compact model for an arbitrary number of gates. The model has been used to describe different structures (i.e. number of gates, dimension of the single transistor and ranges of applied voltages) under static conditions and the results have been verified on Silvaco TCAD simulations. The modeling approach and the attained results for some cases of study will be presented and discussed

    ToPoliNano: Nano-magnet Logic Circuits Design and Simulation

    Among the emerging technologies Field-Coupled devices like Quantum dot Cellular Automata are particularly interesting. Of all the practical implementations of this principle NanoMagnet Logic shows many important features, such as a very low power consumption and the feasibility with up-to- date technology. However, its working principle, based on the interaction among neighbor cells, is quite different with respect to CMOS devices behavior. Dedicated design and simulation tools for this technology are necessary to further study this technology, but at the moment there are no such tools available in the scientific scenario. We present here ToPoliNano, a software developed as a design and simulation tool for NanoMagnet Logic, that can be easily adapted to many others emerging technologies, particularly to any kind of Field-Coupled devices. ToPoliNano allows to design circuits following a top-down approach similar to the one used in CMOS and to simulate them using a switch model specifically targeted for high complexity circuits. This tool greatly enhances the ability to analyze, explore and improve the design of Field- Coupled circuits

    Proteins and metabolites as indicators of flours quality and nutritional properties of two durum wheat varieties grown in different Italian locations

    Durum wheat is an important food source in Mediterranean countries, and Italy is the major producer of durum wheat in Europe. The quality of durum wheat flours depends on the type and amount of gluten proteins and starch while flour nutritional value rests on metabolite contents such as polyphenols. In this work, two Italian cultivars, Iride and Svevo, were analyzed for two years (2016–2017) in four Italian regions to explore how the environment affects: (i) reserve proteome; (ii) starch content and composition; and (iii) free, conjugated, bound phenolics and antioxidant capacity. The impact of environmental and meteorological conditions was significant for many traits. Regardless of the cultivation site, in 2017, a year with less rainfall and a higher temperature during grain filling, there was an increase in low molecular weight glutenins, in the glutenin/gliadin ratio and in the A–type starch granules size, all parameters of higher technological quality. In the same year, the cultivars showed higher amounts of polyphenols and antioxidant capacity. In conclusion, the two wheat cultivars, selected for their medium to high yield and their good quality, had higher performances in 2017 regardless of their sowing locations

    Soil-structure interaction effects on the seismic response of multi-span viaducts

    The paper focuses on the effects of soil-structure interaction in the seismic response of multi-span viaducts on pile foundations. Analyses are performed by means of the substructure approach: the soil-foundation systems are studied in the frequency domain to obtain the foundation input motion and the dynamic impedance functions; inertial interaction analyses are carried out in the time domain accounting for the material nonlinear behaviour. Suitable lumped parameter models are introduced to simulate the frequency dependent behaviour of the soilfoundation system. A specific procedure for selecting and scaling real ground motions is proposed and used for the definition of the spatial seismic input. The seismic response of bridges on compliant base is compared with that obtained from fixed base analyses discussing the significance of soil-structure interaction effects
