    Vortex patterns in a superconducting-ferromagnetic rod

    A superconducting rod with a magnetic moment on top develops vortices obtained here through 3D calculations of the Ginzburg-Landau theory. The inhomogeneity of the applied field brings new properties to the vortex patterns that vary according to the rod thickness. We find that for thin rods (disks) the vortex patterns are similar to those obtained in presence of a homogeneous magnetic field instead because they consist of giant vortex states.     Energy dependence of a vortex line length near a zigzag of pinning centers

    A vortex line, shaped by a zigzag of pinning centers, is described here through a three-dimensional unit cell containing two pinning centers positioned symmetrically with respect to its center. The unit cell is a cube of side L=12ξL=12\xi, the pinning centers are insulating spheres of radius RR, taken within the range 0.2ξ0.2\xi to 3.0ξ3.0\xi, ξ\xi being the coherence length. We calculate the free energy density of these systems in the framework of the Ginzburg-Landau theory.Comment: Submitted to Braz. Jour. Phys.     The marketing of small professional service enterprises: physicians services in Puerto Rico

    This research utilizes the Model for Marketing in Small Professional Service Firms, based on Carson's Model for the Development of Small Firm Marketing, to examine the marketing of Physician Services in Puerto Rico. To achieve its objectives, a combination of quantitative(survey) and qualitative (cases) research is used. From the literature a series of statements is generated to form hypotheses that are tested utilizing the results of a questionnaire survey of 105 physicians in Puerto Rico. The results suggest a possible change of attitude of service providers towards marketing and its use. They reveal that physicians in Puerto Rico are in agreement with the marketing concept but most do not adopt "traditional" techniques of marketing- preferring to focus on the physician/patient relationship. Analysis of eight cases demonstrates the importance of this relationship and suggests that though is seen as important in attracting and retaining patients, most physicians do not see this as marketing, which is perceived to be mostly "advertising" and "selling." Many are cautious not to "commercialise" their practice and any differences in their behaviour can be explained by the way they believe the physician/patient relationship is best enhanced. The research proposes a Model for Marketing Solo Professional Service Firms that depicts the_ relation between the changes, over time, in the personal life cycle of the service provider/owner manager and the stages in the life cycle of the business practice. The model suggests that throughout there is a need to focus on one aspect of marketing for the practice, which may change over time, and that the elements determining the marketing activities at a particular time, how they are undertaken and why they are utilised, are constantly evolving. Thus the marketing practices of small professional firms appear to be contingent on both the external and internal environment of the practice

    Paramagnetic excited vortex states in superconductors

    We consider excited vortex states, which are vortex states left inside a superconductor once the external applied magnetic field is switched off and whose energy is lower than of the normal state. We show that this state is paramagnetic and develop here a general method to obtain its Gibbs free energy through conformal mapping. The solution for any number of vortices in any cross section geometry can be read off from the Schwarz - Christoffel mapping. The method is based on the first order equations used by A.     Effect of the boundary condition on the vortex patterns in mesoscopic three-dimensional superconductors - disk and sphere

    The vortex state of mesoscopic three-dimensional superconductors is determined using a minimization procedure of the Ginzburg-Landau free energy. We obtain the vortex pattern for a mesoscopic superconducting sphere and find that vortex lines are naturally bent and are closest to each other at the equatorial plane. For a superconducting disk with finite height, and under an applied magnetic field perpendicular to its major surface, we find that our method gives results consistent with previous calculations. The matching fields, the magnetization and Hc3H_{c3}, are obtained for models that differ according to their boundary properties. A change of the Ginzburg-Landau parameters near the surface can substantially enhance Hc3H_{c3} as shown here.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures (low resolution

    We study conditions under which the Hausdorff quasi-uniformity UH{\mathcal U}_H of a quasi-uniform space (X,U)(X,{\mathcal U}) on the set P0(X){\mathcal P}_0(X) of the nonempty subsets of XX is bicomplete. Indeed we present an explicit method to construct the bicompletion of the T0T_0-quotient of the Hausdorff quasi-uniformity of a quasi-uniform space. It is used to find a characterization of those quasi-uniform T0T_0-spaces (X,U)(X,{\mathcal U}) for which the Hausdorff quasi-uniformity U~H\widetilde{{\mathcal U}}_H of their bicompletion (X~,U~)(\widetilde{X},{\widetilde{\mathcal U}}) on P0(X~){\mathcal P}_0(\widetilde{X}) is bicomplete

    Transition to a Superconductor with Insulating Cavities

    An extreme type II superconductor with internal insulating regions, namely cavities, is studied here. We find that the cavity-bearing superconductor has lower energy than the defect-free superconductor above a critical magnetic induction B∗B^* for insulating cavities but not for metallic ones. Using a numerical approach for the Ginzburg-Landau theory we compute and compare free energy densities for several cavity radii and at least for two cavity densities, assuming a cubic lattice of spherical cavities.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, to be published in Europhysics Letter

    Vanishing of the upper critical field in Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+\delta} from Landau-Ott scaling

    We apply Landau-Ott scaling to the reversible magnetization data of Bi2_2Sr2_2CaCu2_2O8+δ_{8+\delta} published by Y. Wang et al. [\emph{Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{95} 247002 (2005)}] and find that the extrapolation of the Landau-Ott upper critical field line vanishes at a critical temperature parameter, T^*_c, a few degrees above the zero resistivity critical temperature, T_c. Only isothermal curves below and near to T_c were used to determine this transition temperature. This temperature is associated to the disappearance of the mixed state instead of a complete suppression of superconductivity in the sample.Comment: 3 figure

    A thin superconducting disk, with radius R=4ξR=4\xi and height H=ξH=\xi, is studied in the presence of an applied magnetic field parallel to its major axis.     Standard fuzzy uniform structures based on continuous t-norms

    This paper deals with fuzzy uniform structures previously introduced by the authors [Fuzzy uniform structures and continuous t-norms, Fuzzy Sets Syst. 161 (2009) 1011-1021]. Our approach involves a covariant functor psi from the category of fuzzy uniform spaces and fuzzy uniformly continuous mappings (in our sense) to the category of uniform spaces and uniformly continuous mappings. We show that psi is well-behaved with respect to some significant fuzzy uniform concepts. and its behavior provides a method to introduce notions of tine fuzzy uniform structure and Stone-tech fuzzy compactification in this context. Our method also applies to obtain fuzzy versions of some classical results on topological algebra and hyperspaces. The case of quasi-uniform structures is also analyzed. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V.
