    Недержавні пенсійні фонди як елемент соціально-інвестиційної інфраструктури ринку

    Розкрито теоретичні засади недержавного пенсійного забезпечення. Проаналізовано стан та розвиток недержавних пенсійних фондів як важливої ланки фінансової системи та елементу соціально-інвестиційної інфраструктури фінансового ринку. На основі динаміки основних показників діяльності недержавних пенсійних фондів України упродовж 2014-2016 рр. визначено тенденції у розвитку недержавного пенсійного забезпечення. Розглянуто структуру діючих недержавних пенсійних фондів (відкритих, корпоративних, професійних), їх територіальний розподіл. Проаналізовано динаміку активів та напрями їх інвестування. (Theoretical foundations of the non-state pension provision are revealed. Development of the state and non-state pension funds as an important part of the fi nancial system and an element of the social and investment infrastructure of the fi nancial market are analyzed. Trends in the development of non-state pension provision are identified; they are based on the dynamics of the main indicators of the activity of non-state pension funds of Ukraine during 2014-2016. The structure of existing non-state pension funds (open, corporate, professional), their territorial distribution is considered. The dynamics of assets and directions of their investment are analyzed.

    Molecular characterization of 18S rDNA partial sequence in Microcosmus (Stolidobranchiata, Pyuridae)

    We present a 18S rDNA based molecular phylogeny of two species of the genus Microcosmus (M. sulcatus and M. claudicans) sampled in the Mediterranean, to investigate their phylogenetic position relative to species of the order Stolidobranchiata. The analysis is based on partial sequences (739 bp) of the 18S rDNA. Among the 18 variable sites found between the two species, 4 correspond to transitions (ts), 14 to transversions (tv) and 4 to deletions/insertions. In the considered Stolidobranchiata, we found 4.3% overall mean number of nucleotide differences and 0.06 (S.E. ±0.01) Kimura 2-parameter distance. The mean number of nucleotide differences between Microcosmus spp. and other Stolidobranchiata species was of 6% and 0.08 (S.E. ±0.01) Kimura 2-parameter distance. A molecular phylogeny obtained by Maximum Parsimony corroborates results of the traditional taxonomy

Anche nel presente numero di Reumatismo viene proposto uno studio che illustra alcuni aspetti, in particolare quelli eziologici, della storia delle artriti erosive e di altre artropatie, attraverso una campionatura – oggi diremmo “randomizzata” – di ossa di vertebrati precipitati accidentalmente, a partire da 110.000 anni fa, in una grotta del Wyoming (USA), una sorta di trappola naturale (“Natural Trap Cave”)..

    Infrared Multispectral Monitoring of Cereal Crops

    Plants are subjected to a wide range of stresses which reduces the productivity of agricultural crops. In the case of cereal cultivations, climate change impacts on their production mainly through abiotic and biotic stress due for example to heat and water stress but also to pathogens such as bacteria, fungi, nematodes and others. The area under cereal cultivation is increasing worldwide, but, due to these problems, the current rates of yield growth and overall production are not enough to satisfy future demand. For this motivation, there is the needs to monitor and to control the cultivations, also developing new technological solutions useful to better optimize the management strategies, increasing both the quality of products and the quantity of the annual cereal harvest. Infrared imaging is a well-known non-invasive and non-contact technique that represents an outstanding approach of analysis applied in many fields: engineering, medicine, veterinary, cultural heritage and others. In recent years it has been gaining great interest in agriculture as it is well suited to the emerging needs of the precision agriculture management strategies. In this work, we performed an in-field multispectral infrared monitoring of different cereal crops (durum wheat and common wheat) through the use of both LWIR and MWIR cameras. The monitoring carried out made it possible to identify, among the crops analyzed, those subject to higher stress levels and their response to the different spectral ranges used. The results obtained open to the possibility of identifying new figures of merit useful for an effective monitoring of cereal crops and measurable through remote instrumentation

    A discrete Laplace-Beltrami operator for simplicial surfaces

    We define a discrete Laplace-Beltrami operator for simplicial surfaces. It depends only on the intrinsic geometry of the surface and its edge weights are positive. Our Laplace operator is similar to the well known finite-elements Laplacian (the so called ``cotan formula'') except that it is based on the intrinsic Delaunay triangulation of the simplicial surface. This leads to new definitions of discrete harmonic functions, discrete mean curvature, and discrete minimal surfaces. The definition of the discrete Laplace-Beltrami operator depends on the existence and uniqueness of Delaunay tessellations in piecewise flat surfaces. While the existence is known, we prove the uniqueness. Using Rippa's Theorem we show that, as claimed, Musin's harmonic index provides an optimality criterion for Delaunay triangulations, and this can be used to prove that the edge flipping algorithm terminates also in the setting of piecewise flat surfaces.Comment: 18 pages, 6 vector graphics figures. v2: Section 2 on Delaunay triangulations of piecewise flat surfaces revised and expanded.     The blue lizard spandrel and the island syndrome

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Many small vertebrates on islands grow larger, mature later, lay smaller clutches/litters, and are less sexually dimorphic and aggressive than their mainland relatives. This set of observations is referred to as the 'Island Syndrome'. The syndrome is linked to high population density on islands. We predicted that when population density is low and/or fluctuating insular vertebrates may evolve correlated trait shifts running opposite to the Island Syndrome, which we collectively refer to as the 'reversed island syndrome' (RIS) hypothesis. On the proximate level, we hypothesized that RIS is caused by increased activity levels in melanocortin receptors. Melanocortins are postranslational products of the proopiomelanocortin gene, which controls pleiotropically pigmentation, aggressiveness, sexual activity, and food intake in vertebrates.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We tested the RIS hypothesis performing a number of behavioral, genetic, and ontogenetic tests on a blue colored insular variant of the Italian Wall lizard <it>Podarcis sicula</it>, living on a small island off the Southern Italian coast. The population density of this blue-colored variant was generally low and highly fluctuating from one year to the next.</p> <p>In keeping with our predictions, insular lizards were more aggressive and sexually dimorphic than their mainland relatives. Insular males had wide, peramorphic heads. The growth rate of insular females was slower than growth rates of mainland individuals of both sexes, and of insular males. Consequently, size and shape dimorphism are higher on the Island. As predicted, melanocortin receptors were much more active in individuals of the insular population. Insular lizards have a higher food intake rate than mainland individuals, which is consistent with the increased activity of melanocortin receptors. This may be adaptive in an unpredictable environment such as Licosa Island. Insular lizards of both sexes spent less time basking than their mainland relatives. We suspect this is a by-product (spandrel) of the positive selection for increased activity of melanocortins receptors.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>We contend that when population density is either low or fluctuating annually as a result of environmental unpredictability, it may be advantageous to individuals to behave more aggressively, to raise their rate of food intake, and allocate more energy into reproduction.</p

    Cellular Interaction of Human Eukaryotic Elongation Factor 1A Isoforms

    Besides its canonical role in protein synthesis, the eukaryotic translation elongation factor 1A (eEF1A) is also involved in many other cellular processes such as cell survival and apoptosis. We showed that eEF1A phosphorylation by C-Raf in vitro occurred only in the presence of eEF1A1 and eEF1A2, thus suggesting that both isoforms interacted in cancer cells (heterodimer formation). This hypothesis was recently investigated in COS-7 cells where fluorescent recombinant eEF1A isoforms colocalized at the level of cytoplasm with a FRET signal more intense at plasma membrane level. Here, we addressed our attention in highlighting and confirming this interaction in a different cell line, HEK 293, normally expressing eEF1A1 but lacking the eEF1A2 isoform. To this end, His-tagged eEF1A2 was expressed in HEK 293 cells and found to colocalize with endogenous eEF1A1 in the cytoplasm, also at the level of cellular membranes. Moreover, FRET analysis showed, in this case, the appearance of a stronger signal mainly at the level of the plasma membrane. These results confirmed what was previously observed in COS-7 cells and strongly reinforced the interaction among eEF1A isoforms. Moreover, the formation of eEF1A heterodimer in cancer cells could also be important for cytoskeleton rearrangements rather than for phosphorylation, most likely occurring during cell survival and apoptosis
