    Opportunities and Challenges of Extracting Values in Autobiographical Narratives

    We report three studies in which we applied a value dictionary to narratives. Our objective was to test a theory-driven value dictionary for extracting valuable information from autobiographical and narrative texts. In Studies 1 (N = 106) and 2 (N = 152), participants wrote short autobiographical narratives and in Study 3 (N = 150), participants wrote narratives based on ambiguous stimuli. Participants in all three studies also completed the Portrait Value Questionnaire as a self-report measure of values. Overall, our results demonstrate that it is possible to extract value-relevant information from these narratives. Extracted values from autobiographical narratives showed average correlations of 0.07 (Study 1) and 0.12 (Study 2) with self-reports compared to an average correlation of 0.01 for the extracted values from implicit motive tasks (Study 3). The correlations with self-reports were in line with previous validation studies. The most salient values in narratives diverged somewhat, with a stronger emphasis on achievement values compared to self-reports, probably due to the nature of salient episodes within one's life that require demonstrating success according to social standards. Benevolence values were consistently most important in both self-ratings and text-based scoring. The value structure emerging from narratives diverged from the theoretically predicted structure, yet broad personally vs. socially focused value dimensions were qualitatively discernible.     NIKA: A millimeter-wave kinetic inductance camera

    Current generation millimeter wavelength detectors suffer from scaling limits imposed by complex cryogenic readout electronics. To circumvent this it is imperative to investigate technologies that intrinsically incorporate strong multiplexing. One possible solution is the kinetic inductance detector (KID). In order to assess the potential of this nascent technology, a prototype instrument optimized for the 2 mm atmospheric window was constructed. Known as the N\'eel IRAM KIDs Array (NIKA), it was recently tested at the Institute for Millimetric Radio Astronomy (IRAM) 30-meter telescope at Pico Veleta, Spain. The measurement resulted in the imaging of a number of sources, including planets, quasars, and galaxies. The images for Mars, radio star MWC349, quasar 3C345, and galaxy M87 are presented. From these results, the optical NEP was calculated to be around 1×10151 \times 10^{-15} W/ / Hz1/2^{1/2}. A factor of 10 improvement is expected to be readily feasible by improvements in the detector materials and reduction of performance-degrading spurious radiation.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysic

    Design and Evaluation of HTTP Protocol Parsers for IPFIX Measurement

    In this paper we analyze HTTP protocol parsers that provide a web traffic visibility to IP flow. Despite extensive work, flow meters generally fall short of performance goals due to extracting application layer data. Constructing effective protocol parser for in-depth analysis is a challenging and error-prone affair. We designed and evaluated several HTTP protocol parsers representing current state-of-the-art approaches used in today's flow meters. We show the packet rates achieved by respective parsers, including the throughput decrease (performance implications of application parser) which is of the utmost importance for high-speed deployments.Článek zkoumá syntaktické analyzátory HTTP protokolu, které rozšiřují síťové toky o informace z webového provozu. Výpočetně náročné získávání informací z aplikační vrstvy má vliv na výkon měřicích sond a může vést k výraznému poklesu jejich výkonu. Tvorba rychlého analyzátoru pro hloubkovou analýzu HTTP protokolu je náročný proces s ohledem na správné a včasné zpracování dat ze sítě. Článek porovnává naši implementaci vybraných metod pro analýzu HTTP provozu, které jsou v současnosti používány v sondách na měření síťových toků. Provedená měření ukazují množství paketů, které je sonda schopna zpracovat při zapnuté analýze HTTP a jak toto množství klesá oproti sondám, které analýzu aplikačních protokolů neprovádějí. Jedná se o významnou informaci pro nasazení měřicích sond ve vysokorychlostních sítích

    Motor Preparatory Activity in Posterior Parietal Cortex is Modulated by Subjective Absolute Value

    For optimal response selection, the consequences associated with behavioral success or failure must be appraised. To determine how monetary consequences influence the neural representations of motor preparation, human brain activity was scanned with fMRI while subjects performed a complex spatial visuomotor task. At the beginning of each trial, reward context cues indicated the potential gain and loss imposed for correct or incorrect trial completion. FMRI-activity in canonical reward structures reflected the expected value related to the context. In contrast, motor preparatory activity in posterior parietal and premotor cortex peaked in high “absolute value” (high gain or loss) conditions: being highest for large gains in subjects who believed they performed well while being highest for large losses in those who believed they performed poorly. These results suggest that the neural activity preceding goal-directed actions incorporates the absolute value of that action, predicated upon subjective, rather than objective, estimates of one's performance

    Neutrino induced transitions between the ground states of the A=12 triad

    Neutrino induced reactions on 12^{12}C, an ingredient of liquid scintillators, have been studied in several experiments. We show that for currently available neutrino energies, EνE_{\nu} \le 300 MeV, calculated exclusive cross sections 12^{12}Cgs(ν,l)_{gs}(\nu,l)12^{12}Ngs_{gs} for both muon and electron neutrinos are essentially model independent, provided the calculations simultaneously describe the rates of several other reactions involving the same states or their isobar analogs. The calculations agree well with the measured cross sections, which can be therefore used to check the normalization of the incident neutrino spectrum and the efficiency of the detector.Comment: 9 pages REVTEX, 2 postscript figures, text and figures available at http://www.krl.caltech.edu/preprints/MAP.htm

    Shell-model calculations of neutrino scattering from 12C

    Neutrino reaction cross-sections, (νμ,μ)(\nu_\mu,\mu^-), (νe,e)(\nu_e,e^-), μ\mu-capture and photoabsorption rates on 12^{12}C are computed within a large-basis shell-model framework, which included excitations up to 4ω4\hbar\omega. When ground-state correlations are included with an open pp-shell the predictions of the calculations are in reasonable agreement with most of the experimental results for these reactions. Woods-Saxon radial wave functions are used, with their asymptotic forms matched to the experimental separation energies for bound states, and matched to a binding energy of 0.01 MeV for unbound states. For comparison purposes, some results are given for harmonic oscillator radial functions. Closest agreement between theory and experiment is achieved with unrestricted shell-model configurations and Woods-Saxon radial functions. We obtain for the neutrino-absorption inclusive cross sections: σˉ=13.8×1040\bar{\sigma} = 13.8 \times 10^{-40} cm2^2 for the (νμ,μ)(\nu_{\mu},\mu^{-}) decay-in-flight flux in agreement with the LSND datum of (12.4±1.8)×1040(12.4 \pm 1.8) \times 10^{-40} cm2^2; and σˉ=12.5×1042\bar{\sigma} = 12.5 \times 10^{-42} cm2^2 for the (νe,e)(\nu_{e},e^{-}) decay-at-rest flux, less than the experimental result of (14.4±1.2)×1042(14.4 \pm 1.2) \times 10^{-42} cm2^2.Comment: 19 pages.     Parallel processes:Getting it write?

    This paper offers a critical reflection on the processes surrounding the writing of a book aimed at foster carers and residential workers. By utilising the concept of parallel process as well as the four modes of reflection identified by Ruch (2000), we explore the ways in which the wider context of both direct works with children and reflective practice have been impacted by the tensions between relationally based, child-centred practice and wider managerialist imperatives. The paper draws parallels between these practice tensions and those currently in play within the academy. By employing a dialogical and reflective analysis of the process and interactions surrounding the writing of a practitioner-targeted book, the paper demonstrates the ways in which critical and process reflection post-event took place, considering the heretofore unexplored parallel processes between writing for practice, and practice. In so doing, it identifies the ways in which the authors mirrored practitioners in relation to the management of anxiety, a sense of constrained autonomy and confidence, and an avoidance of recognising and challenging structural and political context.     The Histone Demethylase Jarid1b (Kdm5b) Is a Novel Component of the Rb Pathway and Associates with E2f-Target Genes in MEFs during Senescence

    Senescence is a robust cell cycle arrest controlled by the p53 and Rb pathways that acts as an important barrier to tumorigenesis. Senescence is associated with profound alterations in gene expression, including stable suppression of E2f-target genes by heterochromatin formation. Some of these changes in chromatin composition are orchestrated by Rb. In complex with E2f, Rb recruits chromatin modifying enzymes to E2f target genes, leading to their transcriptional repression. To identify novel chromatin remodeling enzymes that specifically function in the Rb pathway, we used a functional genetic screening model for bypass of senescence in murine cells. We identified the H3K4-demethylase Jarid1b as novel component of the Rb pathway in this screening model. We find that depletion of Jarid1b phenocopies knockdown of Rb1 and that Jarid1b associates with E2f-target genes during cellular senescence. These results suggest a role for Jarid1b in Rb-mediated repression of cell cycle genes during senescence
