    Review: Object vision in a structured world

    In natural vision, objects appear at typical locations, both with respect to visual space (e.g., an airplane in the upper part of a scene) and other objects (e.g., a lamp above a table). Recent studies have shown that object vision is strongly adapted to such positional regularities. In this review we synthesize these developments, highlighting that adaptations to positional regularities facilitate object detection and recognition, and sharpen the representations of objects in visual cortex. These effects are pervasive across various types of high-level content. We posit that adaptations to real-world structure collectively support optimal usage of limited cortical processing resources. Taking positional regularities into account will thus be essential for understanding efficient object vision in the real world

    Visual search involves the matching of visual input to a ''search template,'' an internal representation of taskrelevant information. The present study investigated the contents of the search template during visual search for object categories in natural scenes, for which low-level features do not reliably distinguish targets from nontargets. Subjects were cued to detect people or cars in diverse photographs of real-world scenes. On a subset of trials, the cue was followed by task-irrelevant stimuli instead of scenes, directly followed by a dot that subjects were instructed to detect. We hypothesized that stimuli that matched the active search template would capture attention, resulting in faster detection of the dot when presented at the location of a template-matching stimulus. Results revealed that silhouettes of cars and people captured attention irrespective of their orientation (08, 908, or 1808). Interestingly, strong capture was observed for silhouettes of categorydiagnostic object parts, such as the wheel of a car. Finally, attentional capture was also observed for silhouettes presented at locations that were irrelevant to the search task. Together, these results indicate that search for familiar object categories in real-world scenes is mediated by spatially global search templates that consist of view-invariant shape representations of category-diagnostic object parts

    Our brains engage numerous regions when exposed to biological motion, with the posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS) being the primary locus. The exact roles of hMT+ and the extrastriate body area (EBA) remain unclear. Here, we set out to determine the specific roles of pSTS and EBA during biological motion perception, focusing on walker orientation and walking direction. To obtain converging evidence, we conducted separate TMS and fMRI experiments within the same subjects (N = 12). Two separate tasks were used in the TMS study: walker orientation probing form processing and walking direction probing motion/sequence processing. Task performance was compared before and after applying repetitive offline TMS (1 Hz) over EBA and pSTS (based on fMRI-guided stereotaxy). In the fMRI study, EBA and pSTS were mapped in separate scans using standard localizers.     Advanced in vitro Research Models to Study the Role of Endothelial Cells in Solid Organ Transplantation

    The endothelium plays a key role in acute and chronic rejection of solid organ transplants. During both processes the endothelium is damaged often with major consequences for organ function. Also, endothelial cells (EC) have antigen-presenting properties and can in this manner initiate and enhance alloreactive immune responses. For decades, knowledge about these roles of EC have been obtained by studying both in vitro and in vivo models. These experimental models poorly imitate the immune response in patients and might explain why the discovery and development of agents that control EC responses is hampered. In recent years, various innovative human 3D in vitro models mimicking in vivo organ structure and function have been developed. These models will extend the knowledge about the diverse roles of EC in allograft rejection and will hopefully lead to discoveries of new targets that are involved in the interactions between the donor organ EC and the recipient's immune system. Moreover, these models can be used to gain a better insight in the mode of action of the currently prescribed immunosuppression and will enhance the development of novel therapeutics aiming to reduce allograft rejection and prolong graft survival.</p

Выявлены наличие иммуносупрессии и повышение уровней интерлейкина−6 и лептина при сопутствующем ожирении и дислипидемии.Встановлено взаємозв’язок лептину з метаболічними і деякими імунологічними показниками у хворих на цукровий діабет 2−го типу у поєднанні з аутоімунним тиреоідитом. Виявлено наявність імуносупресії та підвищення рівнів інтерлейкіну−6 і лептину при супутньому ожирінні та дисліпідемії.Association between leptin and some immunological parameters in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus accompanied by autoimmune thyroiditis was established.     An exploratory study looking at the relationship marketing techniques used in the music festival industry

    There are current issues and trends in the music festival market, which may affect the success of an event, and market saturation is at the forefront of these issues. Previous literature, maintaining the need for a marketing approach to festivals, identifi es the need for maintaining strong stakeholder relationships in order to succeed in a business environment; attention has been focused to the theory of relationship marketing (RM) because of the recognition that this practice is complementary to the marketing of festivals. The very nature of the music festival as an annual, usually, 4-day event means that effective marketing is needed to keep connections with the consumer throughout the year. This article focuses on the RM techniques utilised within the music festival industry from the viewpoint of the festival organiser in an attempt to establish how festival organisations value and monitor organisational relationships. This article explores the extent to which these relationships are valued and managed; furthermore, the variations between these intricate relationships are considered by focusing on those held with the organisation ’ s consumers and sponsors, the results of which have provided the ability to establish the importance and relevance of RM to the industry and further identify the marketing communication methods employed to establish and maintain such relationships. In-depth, convergent interviews have been conducted with a segment of music festival organisers from a range of events. The results have been integrated with the study of current literature to best exemplify these issues. It has been established that RM has a strong role in today ’ s commercial and independent music festival industry; technological advances are enabling the organiser to support online relationships further and increase consumer loyalty. There is a need to expand the research further because of the complexity of organisational relationships and the varying categories of festivals

    Myocardial injury after noncardiac surgery and its association with short-term mortality

    Background: To identify patients at risk for postoperative myocardial injury and death, measuring cardiac troponin routinely after noncardiac surgery has been suggested. Such monitoring was implemented in our hospital. The aim of this study was to determine the predictive value of postoperative myocardial injury, as measured by troponin elevation, on 30-day mortality after noncardiac surgery. Methods and Results: This observational, single-center cohort study included 2232 consecutive intermediate- to highrisk noncardiac surgery patients aged ≥60 years who underwent surgery in 2011. Troponin was measured on the first 3 postoperative days. Log binomial regression analysis was used to estimate the association between postoperative myocardial injury (troponin I level &gt;0.06 μg/L) and all-cause 30-day mortality. Myocardial injury was found in 315 of 1627 patients in whom troponin I was measured (19%). All-cause death occurred in 56 patients (3%). The relative risk of a minor increase in troponin (0.07-0.59 μg/L) was 2.4 (95% confidence interval, 1.3-4.2; P&lt;0.01), and the relative risk of a 10- to 100-fold increase in troponin (≥0.60 μg/L) was 4.2 (95% confidence interval, 2.1-8.6; P&lt;0.01). A myocardial infarction according to the universal definition was diagnosed in 10 patients (0.6%), of whom 1 (0.06%) had ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction. Conclusions: Postoperative myocardial injury is an independent predictor of 30-day mortality after noncardiac surgery. Implementation of postoperative troponin monitoring as standard of care is feasible and may be helpful in improving the prognosis of patients undergoing noncardiac surgery.</p
