    Motivational Strategies Used by an Englsh Teacher at Hand Fortuna Center

    This is a qualitative study on the use of motivational strategies by the English teacher at Hand Fortuna Center. This study was based on Dörnyei\u27s (2001) theory about motivational strategies and focused on the interaction between the teacher and his students in the classroom. The data were collected by using video recording and interview. The observation was done in three meetings within two weeks. The duration of the class was 90 minutes for each meeting. The findings showed that the teacher used five out of eight motivational strategies in the classroom. There were making learning stimulating and enjoyable, protecting the learners\u27 self-esteem and increase their self-confidence, presenting task in a motivating way, allowing learners to maintain a positive social image, and promoting cooperation among the learners. For the interview, the writer found that the reason why the teacher used the motivational strategies. It was because the strategies could increase students\u27 motivation in learning language

    Suicide by explosion is rare outside of the context of terrorist activities. We present a case of a man with a history of explosives expertise who committed suicide by bomb/decapitation. The case serves to remind forensic pathologists of several important issues when presented with a case involving explosives, such as ensuring the safety of all those involved in the investigation and the importance of interagency cooperation. Potentially invaluable ancillary tests at autopsy include performing radiology, collecting trace evidence, retaining clothing, ensuring the positive identity of the decedent, and recognizing the importance of documenting injury types and patterns

    An Approximate Large NN Method for Lattice Chiral Models

    An approximation is used that permits one to explicitly solve the two-point Schwinger-Dyson equations of the U(N) lattice chiral models. The approximate solution correctly predicts a phase transition for dimensions dd greater than two. For d≤2d \le 2 , the system is in a single disordered phase with a mass gap. The method reproduces known N=∞N=\infty results well for d=1d=1. For d=2d=2, there is a moderate difference with N=∞N=\infty results only in the intermediate coupling constant region.Comment: Latex file, 19 page

    Pade Approximants, Optimal Renormalization Scales, and Momentum Flow in Feynman Diagrams

    We show that the Pade Approximant (PA) approach for resummation of perturbative series in QCD provides a systematic method for approximating the flow of momentum in Feynman diagrams. In the large-β0\beta_0 limit, diagonal PA's generalize the Brodsky-Lepage-Mackenzie (BLM) scale-setting method to higher orders in a renormalization scale- and scheme-invariant manner, using multiple scales that represent Neubert's concept of the distribution of momentum flow through a virtual gluon. If the distribution is non-negative, the PA's have only real roots, and approximate the distribution function by a sum of delta-functions, whose locations and weights are identical to the optimal choice provided by the Gaussian quadrature method for numerical integration. We show how the first few coefficients in a perturbative series can set rigorous bounds on the all-order momentum distribution function, if it is positive. We illustrate the method with the vacuum polarization function and the Bjorken sum rule computed in the large-β0\beta_0 limit.Comment: 28 pages, LaTeX, including 6 figures requires epsfig.st

    Relaxation dynamics of maximally clustered networks

    We study the relaxation dynamics of fully clustered networks (maximal number of triangles) to an unclustered state under two different edge dynamics---the double-edge swap, corresponding to degree-preserving randomization of the configuration model, and single edge replacement, corresponding to full randomization of the Erd\H{o}s--R\'enyi random graph. We derive expressions for the time evolution of the degree distribution, edge multiplicity distribution and clustering coefficient. We show that under both dynamics networks undergo a continuous phase transition in which a giant connected component is formed. We calculate the position of the phase transition analytically using the Erd\H{o}s--R\'enyi phenomenology

    The effect of genomic information on optimal contribution selection in livestock breeding programs

    BACKGROUND: Long-term benefits in animal breeding programs require that increases in genetic merit be balanced with the need to maintain diversity (lost due to inbreeding). This can be achieved by using optimal contribution selection. The availability of high-density DNA marker information enables the incorporation of genomic data into optimal contribution selection but this raises the question about how this information affects the balance between genetic merit and diversity. METHODS: The effect of using genomic information in optimal contribution selection was examined based on simulated and real data on dairy bulls. We compared the genetic merit of selected animals at various levels of co-ancestry restrictions when using estimated breeding values based on parent average, genomic or progeny test information. Furthermore, we estimated the proportion of variation in estimated breeding values that is due to within-family differences. RESULTS: Optimal selection on genomic estimated breeding values increased genetic gain. Genetic merit was further increased using genomic rather than pedigree-based measures of co-ancestry under an inbreeding restriction policy. Using genomic instead of pedigree relationships to restrict inbreeding had a significant effect only when the population consisted of many large full-sib families; with a half-sib family structure, no difference was observed. In real data from dairy bulls, optimal contribution selection based on genomic estimated breeding values allowed for additional improvements in genetic merit at low to moderate inbreeding levels. Genomic estimated breeding values were more accurate and showed more within-family variation than parent average breeding values; for genomic estimated breeding values, 30 to 40% of the variation was due to within-family differences. Finally, there was no difference between constraining inbreeding via pedigree or genomic relationships in the real data. CONCLUSIONS: The use of genomic estimated breeding values increased genetic gain in optimal contribution selection. Genomic estimated breeding values were more accurate and showed more within-family variation, which led to higher genetic gains for the same restriction on inbreeding. Using genomic relationships to restrict inbreeding provided no additional gain, except in the case of very large full-sib families

    Development of an adaptive window-opening algorithm to predict the thermal comfort, energy use and overheating in buildings

    This investigation of the window opening data from extensive field surveys in UK office buildings demonstrates: 1) how people control the indoor environment by opening windows; 2) the cooling potential of opening windows; and 3) the use of an ‘adaptive algorithm’ for predicting window opening behaviour for thermal simulation in ESP-r. It was found that when the window was open the mean indoor and outdoor temperatures were higher than when closed, but show that nonetheless there was a useful cooling effect from opening a window. The adaptive algorithm for window opening behaviour was then used in thermal simulation studies for some typical office designs. The thermal simulation results were in general agreement with the findings of the field surveys. The adaptive algorithm is shown to provide insights not available using non adaptive simulation methods and can assist in achieving more comfortable, lower energy buildings while avoiding overheating

    LASR-Guided Stellar Photometric Variability Subtraction: The Linear Algorithm For Significance Reduction

    We develop a technique for removing stellar variability in the light curves of δ\delta-Scuti and similar stars. Our technique, which we name the Linear Algorithm for Significance Reduction (LASR), subtracts oscillations from a time series by minimizing their statistical significance in frequency space. We demonstrate that LASR can subtract variable signals of near-arbitrary complexity and can robustly handle close frequency pairs and overtone frequencies. We demonstrate that our algorithm performs an equivalent fit as prewhitening to the straightforward variable signal of KIC 9700322. We also show that LASR provides a better fit to seismic activity than prewhitening in the case of the complex δ\delta-Scuti KOI-976.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics.     Comfort driven adaptive window opening behaviour and the influence of building design

    It is important to understand and model the behaviour of occupants in buildings and how this behaviour impacts energy use and comfort. It is similarly important to understand how a buildings design affects occupant comfort, occupant behaviour and ultimately the energy used in the operation of the building. In this work a behavioural algorithm for window opening developed from field survey data has been implemented in a dynamic simulation tool. The algorithm is in alignment with the proposed CEN standard for adaptive thermal comfort. The algorithm is first compared to the field study data then used to illustrate the impact of adaptive behaviour on summer indoor temperatures and heating energy. The simulation model is also used to illustrate the sensitivity of the occupant adaptive behaviour to building design parameters such as solar shading and thermal mass and the resulting impact on energy use and comfort. The results are compared to those from other approaches to model window opening behaviour. The adaptive algorithm is shown to provide insights not available using non adaptive simulation methods and can assist in achieving more comfortable and lower energy buildings
