Community learning and development training for professionals engaged in community regeneration and community planning
The study was commissioned by the Scottish Executive Development Department to identify training needs and current provision of community learning and development (CLD) training for a range of professionals (other than those formally qualified in CLD) who are engaged in community regeneration and community planning (Local Government in Scotland Act 2003). It was one of a series of studies emanating from the Scottish Executive response to the review: „Empowered to Practice – the future of community learning and development training in Scotland‟. One of the themes of the report taken up by the Scottish Executive was the need for; „wider opportunities for joint training with other disciplines such as teachers, librarians, college lecturers, health workers and social workers‟

Common themes and missing pieces: the educational value of postgraduate teaching development programmes
The purpose of this article is to present and discuss the findings of a literature review undertaken by three members of staff based at City University London, who are also members of a programme team that runs a professional development programme for higher education teachers. The original purpose of the literature review was to provide a deeper and more research-informed mechanism for evaluating and developing the aforementioned programme. Whilst focused in its intentions, the results of the review suggest that the existing research terrain about such programmes might be characterised in terms of common themes (areas for which there is already a range of published research) and missing pieces (areas for which there appears to be a paucity of published material). The authors are now using these results to continue developing their own programme, and as a starting point for follow-up research. However, it is hoped that the review will be of relevance to a wider audience, encouraging others to undertake research to address the missing pieces and as a source for others to enhance their own teaching development programmes

We review recent developments in continuous-wave mid-infrared optical parametric oscillators pumped by fiber lasers. Such devices are potentially valuable spectroscopic sources providing high output powers and rapid, wide-range tuning in the mid-infrared molecular fingerprint region
Ceftriaxone Potentiates Warfarin Activity Greater Than Other Antibiotics in the Treatment of Urinary Tract Infections
Background: The cephalosporin class has been associated with an increased risk of bleeding among elderly patients receiving warfarin. Urinary tract infections (UTI) are the most prevalent infection in elderly patients. Objective: To determine the extent of interaction between antibiotics used in the treatment of UTI, particularly specific cephalosporins and warfarin. Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted on chronic warfarin patients with a diagnosis of UTI treated with ceftriaxone, a first-generation cephalosporin, penicillin, or ciprofloxacin. The primary outcome was the comparison of the extent of international normalized ratio (INR) change from baseline between each antibiotic group. Results: The ceftriaxone group was found to have a statistically significant higher peak INR value compared to all other studied antibiotics (ceftriaxone: 3.56, first-generation cephalosporins: 2.66, penicillins: 2.98, ciprofloxacin: 2.3; P = .004), a statistically significant greater extent of change in INR value (+1.19, +0.66, +0.8, +0.275; P = .006), and a statistically significant greater percentage change in INR value when compared to ciprofloxacin (54.4% vs 12.7%; P = .037). Conclusion: Ceftriaxone interacts with warfarin to increase a patient’s INR value more than other commonly administered antibiotics for UTI treatment. Other antibiotics should be preferred for UTI treatment in patients on warfarin
A discrete invitation to quantum filtering and feedback control
The engineering and control of devices at the quantum-mechanical level--such
as those consisting of small numbers of atoms and photons--is a delicate
business. The fundamental uncertainty that is inherently present at this scale
manifests itself in the unavoidable presence of noise, making this a novel
field of application for stochastic estimation and control theory. In this
expository paper we demonstrate estimation and feedback control of quantum
mechanical systems in what is essentially a noncommutative version of the
binomial model that is popular in mathematical finance. The model is extremely
rich and allows a full development of the theory, while remaining completely
within the setting of finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces (thus avoiding the
technical complications of the continuous theory). We introduce discretized
models of an atom in interaction with the electromagnetic field, obtain
filtering equations for photon counting and homodyne detection, and solve a
stochastic control problem using dynamic programming and Lyapunov function

International chicken trade and increased risk for introducing or reintroducing highly pathogenic avian influenza A (H5N1) to uninfected countries.
Every year billions of chickens are shipped thousands of miles around the globe in order to meet the ever increasing demands for this cheap and nutritious protein source. Unfortunately, transporting chickens internationally can also increase the chance for introducing zoonotic viruses, such as highly pathogenic avian influenza A (H5N1) to new countries. Our study used a retrospective analysis of poultry trading data from 2003 through 2011 to assess the risk of H5N1 poultry infection in an importing country. We found that the risk of infection in an importing country increased by a factor of 1.3 (95% CI: 1.1-1.5) for every 10-fold increase in live chickens imported from countries experiencing at least one H5N1 poultry case during that year. These results suggest that the risk in a particular country can be significantly reduced if imports from countries experiencing an outbreak are decreased during the year of infection or if biosecurity measures such as screening, vaccination, and infection control practices are increased. These findings show that limiting trade of live chickens or increasing infection control practices during contagious periods may be an important step in reducing the spread of H5N1 and other emerging avian influenza viruses
Reliability of Standardized Assessment for Adults who are Deafblind
This study assessed the reliability of the interRAI Community Health Assessment (interRAI CHA) and Deafblind Supplement (DbS). The interRAI CHA and DbS represents a multidimensional, standardized assessment instrument for use with adults (18 and older) who are deafblind. The interrater reliability of the instrument was tested through the completion of dual assessments with 44 individuals who were deafblind in the province of Ontario, Canada. Overall, nearly 50% of items had a kappa value of at least 0.60, indicating fair to substantial agreement for these items. Several items related to psychosocial well-being, mood, and sense of involvement had kappa scores of less than 0.40. However, among these items with low kappa values, most (78%) showed at least 70% agreement between the two assessors. The internal consistency of several health subscales, embedded within the assessment, was also very good and ranged from 0.63 to 0.93. The interRAI was also very good and ranged from 0.63 to 0.93. The interRAI CHA and DbS represents a reliable instrument for assessing adults with deafblindness to better understand their needs, abilities, and preferences
