Spontaneous symmetry breaking in the -symmetric scalar sector
We present a detailed study of the vacua of the -symmetric
three-Higgs-doublet potential, specifying the region of parameters where these
minimisation solutions occur. We work with a CP conserving scalar potential and
analyse the possible real and complex vacua with emphasis on the cases in which
the CP symmetry can be spontaneously broken. Results are presented both in the
reducible-representation framework of Derman, and in the
irreducible-representation framework. Mappings between these are given. Some of
these implementations can in principle accommodate dark matter and for that
purpose it is important to identify the residual symmetries of the potential
after spontaneous symmetry breakdown. We are also concerned with constraints
from vacuum stability.Comment: 37 pages. v2: Minor changes in the references, matches published

Spontaneous symmetry breaking in three-Higgs-doublet -symmetric models
The talk summarises work done by the authors consisting of a detailed study
of the possible vacua in models with three Higgs doublets with symmetry
and without explicit CP violation. Different vacua require special regions of
the parameter space which were analysed in our work. We establish the
possibility of spontaneous CP violation in this framework and we also show
which complex vacua conserve CP. In our work we discussed constraints from
vacuum stability. The results presented here are relevant for model building.Comment: 11 pages, no figures. Prepared for the proceedings of DISCRETE2016:

Effective restoration of chiral and axial symmetries at finite temperature and density
The effective restoration of chiral and axial symmetries is investigated
within the framework of the SU(3) Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. The topological
susceptibility, modeled from lattice data at finite temperature, is used to
extract the temperature dependence of the coupling strength of the anomaly. The
study of the scalar and pseudoscalar mixing angles is performed in order to
discuss the evolution of the flavor combinations of pairs and its
consequences for the degeneracy of chiral partners. A similar study at zero
temperature and finite density is also realized.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure. Talk given at Strange Quark Matter 2004, Cape

Saber: window-based hybrid stream processing for heterogeneous architectures
Modern servers have become heterogeneous, often combining multicore CPUs with many-core GPGPUs. Such heterogeneous architectures have the potential to improve the performance of data-intensive stream processing applications, but they are not supported by current relational stream processing engines. For an engine to exploit a heterogeneous architecture, it must execute streaming SQL queries with sufficient data-parallelism to fully utilise all available heterogeneous processors, and decide how to use each in the most effective way. It must do this while respecting the semantics of streaming SQL queries, in particular with regard to window handling. We describe SABER, a hybrid high-performance relational stream processing engine for CPUs and GPGPUs. SABER executes windowbased streaming SQL queries in a data-parallel fashion using all available CPU and GPGPU cores. Instead of statically assigning query operators to heterogeneous processors, SABER employs a new adaptive heterogeneous lookahead scheduling strategy, which increases the share of queries executing on the processor that yields the highest performance. To hide data movement costs, SABER pipelines the transfer of stream data between different memory types and the CPU/GPGPU. Our experimental comparison against state-ofthe-art engines shows that SABER increases processing throughput while maintaining low latency for a wide range of streaming SQL queries with small and large windows sizes
Social-Aware Forwarding Improves Routing Performance in Pocket Switched Networks
Several social-aware forwarding strategies have been recently introduced in
opportunistic networks, and proved effective in considerably in- creasing
routing performance through extensive simulation studies based on real-world
data. However, this performance improvement comes at the expense of storing a
considerable amount of state information (e.g, history of past encounters) at
the nodes. Hence, whether the benefits on routing performance comes directly
from the social-aware forwarding mechanism, or indirectly by the fact state
information is exploited is not clear. Thus, the question of whether
social-aware forwarding by itself is effective in improving opportunistic
network routing performance remained unaddressed so far. In this paper, we give
a first, positive answer to the above question, by investigating the expected
message delivery time as the size of the net- work grows larger
