Restructuring manufacturing in South Africa's lagging regions : the case of the Free State
The manufacturing economy of the Free State reflects both historical dependence on locally available raw materials and high-levels of state intervention, in terms of support for import substitution and Homeland development. In the contemporary era, deindustrialization, the uncertain future of the clothing / textile industries and limited growth over the last ten years, suggests that, in terms of manufacturing, the Free State is a 'lagging' region. While there has been significant expansion in the number of small firms, this is not matched by employment growth and does not compensate for the loss of many large firms and economic downscaling in the Goldfields. Key sectors such as petro-chemicals and gold jewellery present certain opportunities for future growth
The outcome of HIV-positive patients admitted to intensive care units with acute kidney injury

Several factors are recognized to aggravate the outcome including advanced age, gender,
oliguria and the serum creatinine level. What is currently unknown is whether the presence
of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) aggravates the outcome of patients who
develop acute kidney injury (AKI). Sub-Saharan Africa currently bears the brunt of the
global HIV pandemic. In South Africa alone more than 5.7 million people are infected
((UNAIDS 2008 report on the global AIDS epidemic, 2009), creating substantial additional
pressure on already inadequate social and healthcare infrastructures. Acute kidney injury
occurs commonly in HIV-infected patients admitted to hospital and carries with it
substantial mortality. In a resource-poor environment clinicians are often forced to select
patients with a better chance of survival for admission to the intensive care unit (ICU). A
rigorous evaluation of the outcomes of HIV-positive patients admitted to ICU with AKI may
assist in identifying factors associated with better survival, and thus aid in the cost-effective

A new Coniopterygidae from Lebanese amber
We describe the oldest fossil Coniopterygidae, possibly attributable to the Coniopteryginae, in the new genus and species Libanosemidalis hammanaensis, from the outcrop Hammana / Mdeyrij in the Lower Cretaceous amber of Lebanon. This fossil shares with the extant and Cenozoic lineages of Coniopterygidae the presence of only two M branches, unlike other Cretaceous representatives of the family.We describe the oldest fossil Coniopterygidae, possibly attributable to the Coniopteryginae, in the new genus and species Libanosemidalis hammanaensis, from the outcrop Hammana / Mdeyrij in the Lower Cretaceous amber of Lebanon. The first records of coenagrionid damselflies (Odonata: Zygoptera: Coenagrionidae: Neoerythromma sp. and Nehalennia sp.) from Mexican Amber (Miocene)
Two specimens of the damselfly (Odonata: Zygoptera) family Coenagrionidae are described from Mexican amber of early Miocene age, identified as Neoerythromma sp. and Nehalennia sp. They constitute the first records of the family Coenagrionidae from this amber, and the first fossil records of the genera Neoerythromma and Nehalennia
Structural and magnetic properties of CoPt mixed clusters
In this present work, we report a structural and magnetic study of mixed
Co58Pt42 clusters. MgO, Nb and Si matrix can be used to embed clusters,
avoiding any magnetic interactions between particles. Transmission Electron
Microscopy (TEM) observations show that Co58Pt42 supported isolated clusters
are about 2nm in diameter and crystallized in the A1 fcc chemically disordered
phase. Grazing Incidence Small Angle X-ray Scattering (GISAXS) and Grazing
Incidence Wide Angle X-ray Scattering (GIWAXS) reveal that buried clusters
conserve these properties, interaction with matrix atoms being limited to their
first atomic layers. Considering that 60% of particle atoms are located at
surface, this interactions leads to a drastic change in magnetic properties
which were investigated with conventional magnetometry and X-Ray Magnetic
Circular Dichro\"{i}sm (XMCD). Magnetization and blocking temperature are
weaker for clusters embedded in Nb than in MgO, and totally vanish in silicon
as silicides are formed. Magnetic volume of clusters embedded in MgO is close
to the crystallized volume determined by GIWAXS experiments. Cluster can be
seen as a pure ferromagnetic CoPt crystallized core surrounded by a
cluster-matrix mixed shell. The outer shell plays a predominant role in
magnetic properties, especially for clusters embedded in niobium which have a
blocking temperature 3 times smaller than clusters embedded in MgO
Media Reporting of Neuroscience Depends on Timing, Topic and Newspaper Type
The rapid developments in neuroscientific techniques raise high expectations among the general public and therefore warrant close monitoring of the translation to the media and daily-life applications. The need of empirical research into neuroscience communication is emphasized by its susceptibility to evoke misconceptions and polarized beliefs. As the mass media are the main sources of information about (neuro-)science for a majority of the general public, the objective of the current research is to quantify how critically and accurately newspapers report on neuroscience as a function of the timing of publication (within or outside of periods of heightened media attention to neuroscience, termed “news waves”), the topic of the research (e.g. development, health, law) and the newspaper type (quality, popular, free newspapers). The results show that articles published during neuroscience news waves were less neutral and more optimistic, but not different in accuracy. Furthermore, the overall tone and accuracy of articles depended on the topic; for example, articles on development often had an optimistic tone whereas articles on law were often skeptical or balanced, and articles on health care had highest accuracy. Average accuracy was rather low, but articles in quality newspapers were relatively more accurate than in popular and free newspapers. Our results provide specific recommendations for researchers and science communicators, to improve the translation of neuroscience findings through the media: 1) Caution is warranted during periods of heightened attention (news waves), as reporting tends to be more optimistic; 2) Caution is also warranted not to follow topic-related biases in optimism (e.g., development) or skepticism (e.g., law); 3) Researchers should keep in mind that overall accuracy of reporting is low, and especially articles in popular and free newspapers provide a minimal amount of details.
