    Get PDF
The fluoride removal from synthetic water by pumice was studied at batch experiments in this study. The effect of pH, contact time, fluoride concentration and adsorbent dose on the fluoride sequestration was investigated. The optimum conditions were studied on Kuhbonan water as a case study. The results showed that with increasing of the absorbent amount; contact time and pH improve the efficiency of fluoride removal. The maximum fluoride uptake was obtained in pH and contact time 7.0 and 180 min, respectively. Also, with increasing initial concentration of fluoride in water, the efficiency of fluoride removal decreased. The obtained results in this study were matched with freundlich isotherm and pseudo second order kinetic. The maximum adsorption capacity (Qm) and constant rate were found 0.31 (mg/g) and 0.21 (mg/g.min), respectively. This study also showed that in the optimum conditions, the fluoride removal efficiency from Kuhbonan water by 2.8 mg/L fluoride was 74.64%. Eventually, pumice is recommended as a suitable and low cost absorbent to fluoride removal from aqueous solutions.Key words: Adsorption, Freundlich isotherm, Langmuir isotherm, Kuhbonan water

Background: Keratinophilic fungi are a group of fungi that colonize in various keratinous substrates and degrade them to the components with low molecular weight. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of keratinophilic fungi and aerobic Actinomycetes in soil of city parks in Gorgan. Objectives: In this study, we surveyed the city park soils of Gorgan (a northern province of Iran) to determine the identities and diversity of soil aerobic Actinomycetes, keratinophilic and non-keratinophilic fungi. Materials and Methods: A total of 244 soil samples were collected from 22 diferent parks of Gorgan, North of Iran. The samples were collected from the superfcial layer with depth not exceeding than 0-10 cm in sterile polyethylene bags. We used hair bait technique for isolation keratinophilic fungi. The colonies identifed by macroscopic and microscopic characterization after slide culturing. Actinomycetes were isolated by antibiotic dilution methods and detected by using physiological tests such as Lysozyme, Casein, Xanthine, Hypoxanthine, Gelatin, Urea Broth, and modifed acid-fast stain. Results: Totally, 75 isolates of aerobic Actinomycetes were detected that Actinomadura madurae and Nocardia asteroides were the most prevalent strains, with 14.66 and 28% prevalence respectively. Microsporum gypseum was more frequent than other keratinophilic fungi (22.96%) and Aspergillus spp. was the most species of saprophyte fungi (15.92%). Conclusions: This study showed that the collected soil from studied areas was rich of keratinophilic fungi and Actinomycetes, therefore hygiene protocol should be taken to prevent the spread of pathogenic and saprophytes fungi in the environment of susceptible person. © 2013, Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences

Background: The prevention and correction of vitamin D deficiency requires a precise depiction of the current situation and identification of risk factors in each region. The present study attempted to determine these entities using a systematic review and meta-analysis in Iran. Methods: Articles published online in Persian and English between 2000 and November 1, 2016, were reviewed. This was carried out using national databases such as SID, IranMedex, Magiran, and IranDoc and international databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus. The heterogeneity index among the studies was determined using the Cochran (Q) and I2 test. Based on the heterogeneity results, the random-effect model was applied to estimate the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency. In addition, meta-regression analysis was used to determine heterogeneity-suspected factors, and the Egger test was applied to identify publication bias. Results: The meta-analysis of 48 studies identified 18531 individuals with vitamin D deficiency. According to the random-effect model, the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among male, female, and pregnant women was estimated to be 45.64% (95% CI: 29.63 to 61.65), 61.90% (95% CI: 48.85 to 74.96), and 60.45% (95% CI: 23.73 to 97.16), respectively. The results of the meta-regression analysis indicated that the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency was significantly different in various geographical regions (β=4.4; P=0.023). Conclusion: The results obtained showed a significant prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among the Iranian population, a condition to be addressed by appropriate planning. © 2018, Shiraz University of Medical Sciences. Background: Some studies have established associations between the prevalence of new-onset asthma and asthma exacerbation and socioeconomic and environmental determinants. However, research remains limited concerning the shape of these associations, the importance of the risk factors, and how these factors vary geographically. Objective: We aimed (1) to examine ecological associations between asthma prevalence and multiple socio-physical determinants in the United States; and (2) to assess geographic variations in their relative importance. Methods: Our study design is cross sectional based on county-level data for 2020 across the United States. We obtained self-reported asthma prevalence data of adults aged 18 years or older for each county. We applied conventional and geographically weighted random forest (GWRF) to investigate the associations between asthma prevalence and socioeconomic (e.g., poverty) and environmental determinants (e.g., air pollution and green space). To enhance the interpretability of the GWRF, we (1) assessed the shape of the associations through partial dependence plots, (2) ranked the determinants according to their global importance scores, and (3) mapped the local variable importance spatially. Results: Of the 3059 counties, the average asthma prevalence was 9.9 (standard deviation ± 0.99). The GWRF outperformed the conventional random forest. We found an indication, for example, that temperature was inversely associated with asthma prevalence, while poverty showed positive associations. The partial dependence plots showed that these associations had a non-linear shape. Ranking the socio-physical environmental factors concerning their global importance showed that smoking prevalence and depression prevalence were most relevant, while green space and limited language were of minor relevance. The local variable importance measures showed striking geographical differences. Conclusion: Our findings strengthen the evidence that socio-physical environments play a role in explaining asthma prevalence, but their relevance seems to vary geographically. The results are vital for implementing future asthma prevention programs that should be tailor-made for specific areas

    Get PDF
Background and purpose: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is the most common entrapment neuropathy caused by increased pressure of median nerve in the wrist area. The results of electronic searches in several studies have shown different prevalence rates of this syndrome in Iran in different populations. So, the purpose of this study was to estimate the prevalence of carpal tunnel syndrome in Iran using meta-analysis. Materials and methods: Relevant keywords were searched in national and international databases. The articles were then selected based on inclusion/ exclusion criteria and quality assessment. Data including author names, year of publication, sample size, sample descriptions, assessment criteria, and the prevalence rate of carpal tunnel syndrome were entered in Excel. The standard error of the prevalence of carpal tunnel syndrome in each study was calculated based on the formula for binomial distribution. According to the I-squared heterogeneity and Q indices, the random or fixed effect model were used to estimate the overall prevalence. Also, sensitivity analysis, meta-regression, and survey of publication bias were carried out. Results: A systematic search was completed and 10 articles met the inclusion criteria with 11 evidence of the prevalence of carpal tunnel syndrome in Iran. A total of 14525 people had been studied in whom the prevalence of carpal tunnel syndrome varied from 1.82 to 64.6. The overall prevalence of carpal tunnel syndrome with physical examination based on the random effect model was estimated to be 17.53 (95 CI, 13.74-21.31). Conclusion: This meta-analysis showed a relatively high prevalence of carpal tunnel syndrome in Iran. But, the frequency of this syndrome in different target groups requires further investigations. © 2018, Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences. All rights reserved

    Get PDF
Context: Despite considerable attention given to health statistics of road traffic crashes (RTCs), the epidemiological aspects of injuries resulting from RTCs are not fully understood in Iran and other developing countries. The aim of this review was to study the epidemiological pattern and issues arising due to RTCs in Iran. Evidence Acquisition: The scope of this study involves data from a broad range of published literature on RTCs in Iran. Data collection for this study was conducted by searching for keywords such as traffic accidents, traffic crashes, motorcycle accidents, motorcycle crashes, motorcycle injury, motor vehicle injury, motor vehicle crashes and motor vehicle accidents, Iran and Iranian in various databases such as Embase, PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, Magiran, Iranian scientific information database (SID) and IranMedex. Results: This study comprised of 95 articles. It is evident from this review that a large number of severe RTCs occur due to collision of two or more vehicles and most of the victims are males aged between 30 and 39 years. Male pedestrian, drivers and passengers are more likely to be severely injured in comparison to females. One of the most prevalent causes of death among adults involved in the RTCs are head injuries and the majority of deaths occur prior to hospitalization. Mortality rates for RTCs are higher in summer, especially during midnight among all age groups. The most common individual and environmental risk factors associated with RTCs include lack of attention, getting trapped in the car, listening to music, fatigue and sleepiness, duration and distance and negligence of seatbelt usage while driving. Conclusions: The findings of the current study will be beneficial in prevention of RTCs and its associated complications and hence will be vital for policy makers, health service managers and stakeholders

Response to the Bam Earthquake: A Qualitative Study on the Experiences of the Top and Middle Level Health Managers in Kerman, Iran

    Get PDF
Introduction: The 2003 Bam, Iran earthquake resulted in high casualties and required international and national assistance. This study explored local top and middle level managers’ disaster relief experiences in the aftermath of the Bam earthquake. Methods: Using qualitative interview methodology, top and middle level health managers employed during the Bam earthquake were identified. Data were collected via in-depth interviews with participants. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. Results: Results showed that the managers interviewed experienced two main problems. First, inadequacy of preparation of local health organisations, which was due to lack of familiarity of the needs, unavailability of essential needs, and also increasing demands, which were above the participants’ expectations. Second, inappropriateness of delivered donations was perceived as a problem; for example, foods and sanitary materials were either poor quality or expired by date recommended for use. Participants also found international teams to be more well-equipped and organised. Conclusions: During the disaster relief period of the response to the Bam earthquake, local health organizations were ill prepared for the event. In addition, donations delivered for relief were often poor quality or expired beyond a usable date

    Get PDF
Background: Postpartum is a significant transition period for women and could be markedly stressful. Postpartum stress is a well-established risk factor for poor parenting practices and inadequate mother-infant interaction. Objectives: The present study aimed to assess adaptation to motherhood and its influential factors in the first year postpartum in Iranian women. Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed in an urban area in the north of Iran. Inclusion criteria were age of more than 18 years, primiparous women, having healthy children in less than one year postpartum, Persian literacy, and willingness to participate in the research. Ill and disabled women, those with a history of depression, and high-risk pregnancies were excluded from the study. Convenience sampling was employed in seven health centers, and 536 subjects were selected. Data were collected using the scale of the experiences of Iranian first-time mothers in maternal role adaptation and demographic questionnaires. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics and regression and ordinal logistic regression. Results: None of the women had poor adaptation to motherhood. In addition, 2.6% of the subjects had average adaptation, 78.8% had good adaptation, and 18.6% had excellent adaptation. According to the logistic regression results, favorable economic status increased the possibility of appropriate adaptation by twice (OR=2.03; CI: 1.3-3.004; P<0.001). Conclusion: Provision of proper counseling services requires the recognition of the influential factors in adaptation to motherhood. According to the results, adaption of women to motherhood in the first year postpartum largely depends on the economic support of the mother and infant
