    Two Steps Forward and One Step Back: An Assessment of How Uneven Economic Development Affects the Number of Civil Wars

    The effects of economic development are enormously important in understanding the causes of civil war and the requirements for successful post-conflict reconstruction. In recent decades we have seen an increase in the number of civil wars because of a phenomenon known as the conflict trap. I question why we see an increase in civil wars and what role unstable economic development plays in contributing to the conflict trap. This paper offers evidence to support the hypothesis that uneven economic development increases the risk of multiple civil wars occurring in a short amount of time. Based on the results of testing my hypothesis I suggest that the conflict trap can be broken, and the risk of civil war decreased, when economic growth is stabilized. I suggest participation in the global economic community as a mechanism for stabilizing economic growth

    A Clinical Pathway Education Program for Pediatric Nurses

    Clinical pathways have been studied to promote best practices in nursing and enhance patient satisfaction. For 10 years a pediatric orthopedic surgical team at a Midwest hospital has not had a clinical pathway to treat or standardize care for adolescents following posterior spinal fusion surgery. Pain scores and patients\u27 length of stay were collected using a retrospective chart review. This information was used to revise preoperative education materials and develop a visual poster. The purpose of this project was to identify and develop a way to educate the pediatric nursing staff on the use of the developed educational materials, poster, and clinical pathway prior to its implementation. David A. Kolb\u27s learning cycle and the experiential learning model was used as the theoretical foundation of this study. The quality improvement project for the nurses will be developed using a flipped classroom approach as the learning environment. Videos, scenarios, and small group activities will be created and used in an interactive learning environment. The study will use a pretest-posttest design of retrospective chart review data with the independent variable being the education provided to the nurses. Social implications related to this project are to provide information on the plan of care following surgery to the adolescent and caregiver. This project will promote positive social change for adolescents and caregivers who will be engaged in the postoperative care to increase their satisfaction and decrease their anxiety

    Efficient oxidative dearomatisations of substituted phenols using hypervalent iodine (iii) reagents and antiprotozoal evaluation of the resulting cyclohexadienones against T. b. rhodesiense and P. falciparum Strain NF54

    Quinones and quinols are secondary metabolites of higher plants that are associated with many biological activities. The oxidative dearomatization of phenols induced by hypervalent iodine(III) reagents has proven to be a very useful synthetic approach for the preparation of these compounds, which are also widely used in organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry. Starting from several substituted phenols and naphthols, a series of cyclohexadienone and naphthoquinone derivatives were synthesized using different hypervalent iodine(III) reagents and evaluated for their in vitro antiprotozoal activity. Antiprotozoal activity was assessed against Plasmodium falciparum NF54 and Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense STIB900. Cytotoxicity of all compounds towards L6 cells was evaluated and the respective selectivity indices (SI) were calculated. We found that benzyl naphthoquinone 5c was the most active and selective molecule against T. brucei rhodesiense (IC50 = 0.08 muM, SI = 275). Furthermore, the antiprotozoal assays revealed no specific effects. In addition, some key physicochemical parameters of the synthesised compounds were calculated

    This project tasked us with creating a high-usability web application for the Valparaiso University Department of Geology and its geological specimens collection. The application is made using HTML/CSS, PHP, and SQL to hold and show mineral specimen data collected by the professors within the Geology Department. The purpose of this application is to allow students and professors to easily store and access data on the rocks and minerals that they collect. The students can input a unique code or keyword into a search bar within the application, or scan a unique QR code to search specimens of minerals within the collection. Once queried, the application displays the mineral\u27s name, date of collection, who it was collected by, the region the mineral was found, a description of the mineral, as well as photos of the specimen

    Magnetism and d-wave superconductivity on the half-filled square lattice with frustration

    The role of frustration and interaction strength on the half-filled Hubbard model is studied on the square lattice with nearest and next-nearest neighbour hoppings t and t' using the Variational Cluster Approximation (VCA). At half-filling, we find two phases with long-range antiferromagnetic (AF) order: the usual Neel phase, stable at small frustration t'/t, and the so-called collinear (or super-antiferromagnet) phase with ordering wave-vector (π,0)(\pi,0) or (0,π)(0,\pi), stable for large frustration. These are separated by a phase with no detectable long-range magnetic order. We also find the d-wave superconducting (SC) phase (dx2−y2d_{x^2-y^2}), which is favoured by frustration if it is not too large. Intriguingly, there is a broad region of coexistence where both AF and SC order parameters have non-zero values. In addition, the physics of the metal-insulator transition in the normal state is analyzed. The results obtained with the help of the VCA method are compared with the large-U expansion of the Hubbard model and known results for the frustrated J1-J2 Heisenberg model. These results are relevant for pressure studies of undoped parents of the high-temperature superconductors: we predict that an insulator to d-wave SC transition may appear under pressure.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figure

    Customization, extension and reuse of outdated hydrogeological software

    Each scientist is specialized in his or her field of research and in the tools that he or she uses during the research in a specified site. Thus, he or she is the most suitable person for improving the tools by overcoming their limitations to realize faster and higher quality analysis. However, most scientists are not software developers. Hence, it is necessary to provide them with an easy approach that enables non-software developers to improve and customize their tools. This paper presents an approach for easily improving and customizing any hydrogeological software. It is the result of experiences with updating several interdisciplinary case studies. The main insights of this approachhave been demonstrated using four examples: MIX (FORTRAN-based), BrineMIX (C++-based), EasyQuim and EasyBal (both spreadsheet-based). The improved software has been proven to be a better tool for enhanced analysis by substantially reducing the computation time and the tedious processing of the input and output data files

    Alternative splicing of TGF-betas and their high-affinity receptors TβRI, TβRII and TβRIII (betaglycan) reveal new variants in human prostatic cells

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The transforming growth factors (TGF)-β, TGF-β1, TGF-β2 and TGF-β3, and their receptors [TβRI, TβRII, TβRIII (betaglycan)] elicit pleiotropic functions in the prostate. Although expression of the ligands and receptors have been investigated, the splice variants have never been analyzed. We therefore have analyzed all ligands, the receptors and the splice variants TβRIB, TβRIIB and TGF-β2B in human prostatic cells.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Interestingly, a novel human receptor transcript TβRIIC was identified, encoding additional 36 amino acids in the extracellular domain, that is expressed in the prostatic cancer cells PC-3, stromal hPCPs, and other human tissues. Furthermore, the receptor variant TβRIB with four additional amino acids was identified also in human. Expression of the variant TβRIIB was found in all prostate cell lines studied with a preferential localization in epithelial cells in some human prostatic glands. Similarly, we observed localization of TβRIIC and TGF-β2B mainly in the epithelial cells with a preferential localization of TGF-β2B in the apical cell compartment. Whereas in the androgen-independent hPCPs and PC-3 cells all TGF-β ligands and receptors are expressed, the androgen-dependent LNCaP cells failed to express all ligands. Additionally, stimulation of PC-3 cells with TGF-β2 resulted in a significant and strong increase in secretion of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) with a major participation of TβRII.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In general, expression of the splice variants was more heterogeneous in contrast to the well-known isoforms. The identification of the splice variants TβRIB and the novel isoform TβRIIC in man clearly contributes to the growing complexity of the TGF-β family.</p
