    An Expanding HI Photodissociated Region Associated with the Compact HII Region G213.880-11.837 in the GGD 14 Complex

    We present high angular and spectral resolution HI 21~cm line observations toward the cometary-shaped compact HII region G213.880-11.837 in the GGD~14 complex.The kinematics and morphology of the photodissociated region, traced by the HI line emission, reveal that the neutral gas is part of an expanding flow. The kinematics of the HI gas along the major axis of G213.880-11.837 shows that the emission is very extended toward the SE direction, reaching LSR radial velocities in the tail of about 14 km/s. The ambient LSR radial velocity of the molecular gas is 11.5 km/s, which suggests a champagne flow of the HI gas. This is the second (after G111.61+0.37) cometary HII/HI region known.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal (10 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

    Geometric morphometrics of endophytic oviposition traces of Odonata (Eocene, Argentina)

    The insertion of the Odonata ovipositor in the plant tissue generates a scar that surrounds the eggs (trace). In insects, individual egg traces are known to vary in size, but their variation in individual shape is mostly unknown. Twenty four specimens were obtained from the Laguna del Hunco (Lower Eocene, Chubut) and Río Pichileufú (Middle Eocene, Río Negro), Argentina, which had 1346 oviposition traces (MEF Collection). For the first time, a study of the shape and size of a large number of individual Odonata endophytic egg traces was carried out using traditional (general and mixed linear models) and geometric morphometrics (Fourier elliptical series) to elucidate whether there are changes in size or shape of the individual endophytic egg traces associated with the substrate used at the time of oviposition, if the Lower Eocene traces have varied in relation to those of the Middle Eocene, and if the ichnological classification (Paleoovoidus arcuatus, P. bifurcatus and P. rectus) reflects such variations. We found differences in size ( p < 0.05), but not in shape, in relation to the variables studied. This could reflect that the shape of Odonata eggs (inferred from the traces), unlike their size, could have a strong evolutionary constraint already observed since the Eocene.Fil: Romero Lebrón, María Eugenia.     Plant-insect interactions can provide extremely valuable information for reconstructing the oviposition behavior. We have studied about 1350 endophytic egg traces of coenagrionid damselflies (Odonata: Zygoptera) from the Eocene, identifying triangular or drop-shaped scars associated with them. This study aims to determine the origin of these scars. Our behavioral study of about 1,800 endophytic eggs from recent coenagrionids indicates that these scars were caused by ovipositor incisions, but without egg insertion. The scar correlates (χ2-test) with leaf veins in both fossil and extant species. We infer that a female would detect the proximity of a leaf vein and avoid egg-laying, generating a scar that also fossilizes. For the first time, a scar produced by the ovipositor has been identified, indicating the existence of undesirable areas for oviposition. Accordingly, we recognize that Coenagrionidae damselflies (narrow-winged damselflies or pond damselflies) have been avoiding leaf veins for at least 52 million years

    Study of Geological Heritage for educational purposes: an example in the geology of the province of Guadalajara

    Dentro del estudio del Patrimonio Geológico de una región, uno de los principales objetivos es la elaboración de un inventario de Lugares de Interés Geológico que permita conocer la riqueza geológica de una región. Además, el desarrollo de este tipo de estudios permite conocer el estado de conservación de los elementos geológicos inventariados, estableciéndose una serie de medidas que permitan su preservación. Este tipo de acciones deben ser prioritarias a la hora de desarrollar cualquier tipo de actividad divulgativa, por lo que es de vital importancia gestionar su conservación previamente a su difusión. En la provincia de Guadalajara existe un importante conjunto de Lugares de Interés Geológico de gran interés tanto científico como divulgativo, por lo que es necesario analizar sus características para identificar qué elementos geológicos pueden ser susceptibles de ser empleados como georrecursos.One of the main objectives in the study of the Geological Heritage of a region is the elaboration of an inventory of Geological Points of Interest that facilitates getting to know the geodiversity of a region. In addition, the development of this type of studies helps to know the state of conservation of the geological elements inventoried, establishing a series of measures that favor its preservation. This type of actions must be a priority when developing any type of educational activity, so it is vital to manage their conservation prior to their disclosure. In the province of Guadalajara there is an important set of Geological Interest Points of great scientific and educational interest, therefore it is necessary to analyze its characteristics in order to identify which geological elements may be susceptible of being used as georesources
