    FPGA IMPLEMENTATION OF RED ALGORITHM FOR HIGH SPEED PUPIL ISOLATION

    Iris recognition is an automated method of biometric identification that uses mathematical pattern-recognition techniques on video images of the irises of an individual’s eyes, whose complex random patterns are unique and can be seen from some distance. Modern iris recognition algorithms can be computationally intensive, yet are designed for traditional sequential processing elements, such as a personal computer. However, a parallel processing alternative using Field Programmable Gate Array offers an opportunity to speed up iris recognition. Within the means of this project, iris template generation with directional filtering, which is a computationally expensive, yet parallel portion of a modern iris recognition algorithm, is parallelized on an FPGA system. An algorithm that is both accurate and fast in a hardware design that is small and transportable are crucial to the implementation of this tool. As part of an ongoing effort to meet these criteria, this method improves a iris recognition algorithm, namely pupil isolation.     Direct Urca neutrino rate in colour superconducting quark matter

    If deconfined quark matter exists inside compact stars, the primary cooling mechanism is neutrino radiation via the direct Urca processes d->u+e+antinu_e and u+e->d+nu_e. Below a critical temperature, T_c, quark matter forms a colour superconductor, one possible manifestation of which is a condensate of quark Cooper pairs in an electric-charge neutralising background of electrons. We compute the neutrino emission rate from such a phase, including charged pair-breaking and recombination effects, and find that on a material temperature domain below T_c the pairing-induced suppression of the neutrino emission rate is not uniformly exponential. If gapless modes are present in the condensed phase, the emissivity at low temperatures is moderately enhanced above that of completely unpaired matter. The importance of charged current pair-breaking processes for neutrino emission both in the fully gapped and partially gapped regimes is emphasised.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures; to appear in Phys.     Multi Indicator based Hierarchical Strategies for Technical Analysis of Crypto market Paradigm

    The usage of technical analysis in the crypto market is very popular among algorithmic traders. This involves the application of strategies based on technical indicators, which shoot BUY and SELL signals to help the investors to take trading decisions. However, instead of depending on the popular myths of the market, a proper empirical analysis can be helpful in lucrative endeavors in trading cryptocurrencies. In this work, four technical indicators namely Exponential Moving Averages (EMA), Bollinger Bands (BB), Relative Strength Index (RSI), and Parabolic Stop And Reverse (PSAR) are used individually to devise strategies that are implemented, and their performance is validated using the price data of Bitcoin from yahoo finance for 2018-22, individually for each year and all the five years consolidated to compute the performance metrics including Profit percentage, Net profitability percentage, and Number of total transactions. The results show that the performance of strategies based on trend indicators is better than that of momentum indicators where the EMA strategy provided the best result with a profit percentage of 394.13%. Further, the performance of these strategies is analyzed in three different market scenarios namely Uptrend/Bullish trend, Downtrend/Bearish trend, and Fluctuating/oscillating markets to analyze the applicability of each of these smart strategies in the three scenarios. Based on the insights obtained from the analysis, Hybrid strategies using multiple indicators with a hierarchical approach are developed whose performance is further improved by imposing constraints in a Downtrend market scenario. The novelty of these algorithms is that they identify the scenario in the market using multiple indicators in a hierarchal approach, and utilize appropriate indicators as per the market scenario. Four strategies namely, Multi indicator based Hierarchical Strategy (MIHS) with EMA9, Multi indicator based Hierarchical Strategy (MIHS) with EMA7, Multi-Indicator based Hierarchical Constrained Strategy (MIHCS) with EMA9, and Multi-Indicator based Hierarchical Constrained Strategy (MIHCS) with EMA7 are developed which give profit percentage of 154.45%, 437.48%, 256.31%, and 701.77% respectively when applied on the Bitcoin price data during 2018-22

    Gambogic acid potentiates gemcitabine induced anticancer activity in non-small cell lung cancer

    Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the most frequent type of lung cancer accounting up to 80-85% of all lung cancer (LC) cases. Gemcitabine (Gem), a pyrimidine nucleoside antimetabolite, is widely used chemotherapy offering several months survival benefit in patients with NSCLC. The emergence of Gem resistance is a main clinical concern in cancer treatment and thus a continuous demand for development of new therapeutic strategies to improve its antitumor activity. Hence, we report an adjuvant therapeutic regimen based on natural compound, gambogic acid (GA) which has been shown to enhanced Gem induced inhibition of cancer cell growth, arrest cell cycle, and induce apoptosis by enhanced accumulation of Gem. The in vitro cell viability, clonogenicity, invasion, and migration assays demonstrated a significant higher therapeutic effect of Gem when it was combined with GA in A549 and H1299 cells. A better access of internalization of drug molecules achieved in rhodamine 123 assay when GA was used as adjuvant treatment. Further, GA and Gem combination significantly reduced tubular formation of HUVEC cells indicates lowering angiogenesis potential. Microarray and Western blot studies confirm that GA + Gem co-treatment strategy promotes cancer cell death by downregulating anti-apoptotic proteins, chemoresistance-associated proteins, and upregulation of apoptosis proteins. More importantly, a significant higher therapeutic benefit was noticed for GA and Gem combination in A549 xenograft mice model. Together, these results offer a rationale to evaluate the clinical translational possibility of GA as adjuvant therapy to overcome Gem resistance. This combination regimen can be a new therapeutic concept to eradicate this devastating disease

    Is surgery the only option for unstable ankle fracture?

    Background: Ankle fracture is one of the most common injuries in sports and daily activity. Unstable ankle fracture that are displaced fracture of the lateral malleolus and most bimalleolar or trimalleolar fractures need surgical reduction and fixation.Methods: It is a single centre study in which all unstable ankle fracture above the age of 18 and not associated with any other injury were included in the study. Following fixation patients were followed up at 6 weeks, 3 months and 6 months and functional outcome was assessed with American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle score (AOFAS).Results: Supination external rotation injury was most common type. Mean AOFAS score at the end of six months was found to be best in supination adduction type. Posterior malleolus fixation with screw were found to have maximum AOFAS score.Conclusions: Surgical outcome in unstable ankle fracture are proved to have good functional outcome

    Evaluation of Annual Statice (Limonium sinuatum L.) Cultivars

    A field study was conducted during rabi season of 2003-2004 to evaluate the potential of statice cultivars as cut flower crop in the field of Department of Floriculture and Landscape Gardening, K.R.C. College of Horticulture, Arabhavi. The experiment was laid out as a Randomised Block Design with four replications. The panicles of each variety were harvested when calycys of individual flower have mostly opened and showing colour. The cultivar Turbo White recorded maximum plant height (21.78 cm), panicle length (80.94 cm), stem diameter (0.61 cm), no. of leaves (186.60), maximum fresh weight of panicles (530.09 g/plant), plant spread 62.15 cm2 and remained superior over others. The results are in agreement with the findings of Angadi (2000) in China aster. Maximum panicle production per plant (25.64) was recorded in cv. Turbo White, which was on par with the cultivar Turbo Carmine (22.54). The results were in line with the findings of Kumar et al. (1998) in annual statice Turbo White. The cultivar Turbo White was good in quality parameters by recording maximum panicle length, girth and number of branches per panicle. It was also vigorous in vegetative growth. Therefore, the cultivar could produce better quality panicles and found to be suitable for semi arid regions

    Psychopathic traits modulate brain responses to drug cues in incarcerated offenders

    Recent neuroscientific evidence indicates that psychopathy is associated with abnormal function and structure in limbic and paralimbic areas. Psychopathy and substance use disorders are highly comorbid, but clinical experience suggests that psychopaths abuse drugs for different reasons than non-psychopaths, and that psychopaths do not typically experience withdrawal and craving upon becoming incarcerated. These neurobiological abnormalities may be related to psychopaths\u27 different motivations for-and symptoms of-drug use. This study examined the modulatory effect of psychopathic traits on the neurobiological craving response to pictorial drug stimuli. Drug-related pictures and neutral pictures were presented and rated by participants while hemodynamic activity was monitored using functional magnetic resonance imaging. These data were collected at two correctional facilities in New Mexico using the Mind Research Network mobile magnetic resonance imaging system. The sample comprised 137 incarcerated adult males and females (93 females) with histories of substance dependence. The outcome of interest was the relation between psychopathy scores (using the Hare Psychopathy Checklist-Revised) and hemodynamic activity associated with viewing drug-related pictures vs. neutral pictures. There was a negative association between psychopathy scores and hemodynamic activity for viewing drug-related cues in the anterior cingulate, posterior cingulate, hippocampus, amygdala, caudate, globus pallidus, and parts of the prefrontal cortex. Psychopathic traits modulate the neurobiological craving response and suggest that individual differences are important for understanding and treating substance abuse

    Rapid and Efficient N-tert-butoxy carbonylation of Amines Catalyzed by Sulfated Tin Oxide Under Solvent-free Condition

    A straightforward, rapid, and efficient protocol for the N-tert-butoxy carbonyl (N-Boc) protection of amines (aromatic, aliphatic) using sulfated tin oxide catalyst is illustrated. N-Boc protection of various amines was carried out with (Boc)2O using sulfated tin oxide as a catalyst at room temperature under solvent-free conditions. Rapid reaction times, ease of handling, cleaner reactions, easy work-up, reusable catalyst, and excellent isolated yields are the striking features of this methodology which can be considered to be one of the better methods for the protection of amines and alcohols.     Iodometric determination of milligram and microgram amounts of levocetirizine in pharmaceuticals

    Four simple, selective and sensitive methods are described for the determination of levocetirizine dihydrochloride (LCT) in bulk drug and in tablets. The methods exploit the well-known analytical reaction between iodide and iodate in the presence of acid solution. Iodide present is oxidized by iodate in an amount equivalent to the HCl present in LCT to iodine and the liberated iodine is determined by four different procedures which inturn quantify LCT at varying detection range and sensitiveness. Two direct titrimetric procedures involve titration of iodine by thiosulphate either towards starch end point (method A) or potentiometrically (method B). Both the methods have a reaction stiochiometry of 1: 1 (LCT: liberated iodine) and have quantification ranges of 2–20 mg LCT for method A and method B. The liberated iodine is also measured spectrophotometrically at 350 nm (method C) or the iodine-starch complex measured at 570 nm (method D). In both the methods, the absorbance is found to be linearly dependent on the concentration of iodine which in turn is related to LCT concentration. The calibration curves are linear over 5–40 and 1.25–12.5 mg mL−1 LCT for method C and method D, respectively. The calculated molar absorptivity and Sandel sensitivity values are 1.0 × 104 L mol−1 cm−1 and 0.0435 mg cm−2, respectively for method C, and their respective values for method D are 2.9 × 104 L mol−1 cm−1 and 0.0156 mg cm−2. The intra-day and inter-day accuracy and precision studies were carried according to the ICH guidelines. The method was successfully applied to the analysis of two brands of tablets LCT. The accuracy was also checked by placebo blank and synthetic mixture analyses besides recovery study via standard addition procedure
